Service Learning or Social Entrepreneurship?

• Integrating service learning into curriculum maximises success.

• Some universities manage service learning through a central unit, while others manage projects at the department level.

• Social Entrepreneurship is a concept of Business Schools, but most universities organise a range of community engagement projects that don’t fit the “social entrepreneurship” definition. These projects may have great value without being entrepreneurial.

Keys to success• Local community partnerships are critical• Local needs must be central to the project – it should be

of value to the community• Long term university commitment rather than ad hoc

projects• Student involvement should be meaningful – duration and

roles.• Local language skills are vital for managing international

projects.
