Undergraduate orientation programIIT Mandi organized orientation programs for the new students who gained admission in the semester beginning August 2019. The program for B.Tech. students was organized on 25 July. The incoming undergraduate batch has 53 girls and 209 boys (20.23% female students, versus the institute’s target of 20% for the year). Students from across India, including the North-east and south India, have joined the existing B.Tech. programs (civil engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering and computer science and engineering) and the new B.Tech. (data science and engineering, and engineering physics) and dual degree (bioengineering) programs, established this year. The Director and Deans welcomed the students and parents and gave an overview of the institute, the undergraduate curriculum, student life and the five-week induction program. There was an interactive session, followed by the admission and registration process.

The orientation program for the incoming PG students was organized on 1 August. IIT Mandi welcomed the M.Sc. (Applied Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry),M.Tech.(Biotechnology, Structural Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Power Electronics and Drives, Communications and Signal Processing, VLSI)and M.A. (Development Studies) students. More than 230 students have joined these programs.

Orientation for M.Sc., Ph.D. & Integrated Ph.D. students

The orientation program for M.S., Ph.D. and Integrated Ph.D. students was organized on 2 August. The Director and Deans welcomed the students. The chairpersons of the schools of Basic Sciences, Humanities and Social Sciences, Computing and Electrical Engineering, and Engineering presented the research opportunities available at the different schools. Around 50 students have joined.

Academic Events

The 3rd Himachal Pradesh Science Congress was held at IIT Mandi during 22-23 October 2018. The event was jointly organized by the Himachal Pradesh Council of Science, Technology and Environment (HIMCOSTE) and IIT Mandi on the theme ‘Rural Upliftment through Science and Technology Interventions’. This event provided a platform to all those working on rural innovations to discuss recent progress and future trends in technologies/products relevant for rural transformation. Over 500 individuals from institutions all over India participated.

211 students graduated during the Sixth Convocation of Indian Institute of Technology Mandi held on 29 October 2018.

1. A 15-day long Vigyan Jyoti Workshop (a DST initiative for young female students) was held at the institute during 9-23 September 2018. The purpose of this workshop was to motivate female students in schools of Himachal Pradesh to join the field of Science and Technology.

2. A training programme on Landslide Mitigation and Rehabilitation was organized during 12-14 November 2018 for HP state government engineers and engineering students. It was sponsored by the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), Government of India.

3. A Faculty Development Program on High Performance Computing (FDP-HPC 2018) was held during 26-30 November 2018 at IIT Mandi. It was funded by C-DAC Pune and witnessed participation of young faculty members and research scholars from institutions in HP and J&K.

4. A Mini Mathematics Training and Talent Search Program was organized during 3-8 December 2018 to promote mathematical thinking and expose young minds to the excitement of doing mathematics.

5. A one-day training workshop was organized for entrepreneurs on 26 December 2018 on the theme The Use of Briquette Machine for Dry Pine Needle Briquetting. A total of 35 entrepreneurs from different parts of Himachal Pradesh participated in the workshop.

6. Earthquake Risk Mitigation: A Training Program on Strengthening of Techno Legal Regime to Ensure Structural Safety was organized during 21-23 January 2019. This was sponsored by the HP Institute of Public Administration and the State Disaster Management Authority.

7. National Science Day was marked at IIT Mandi on 28 February 2019. This witnessed participation by nearly 150 people, including students and faculty from Vallabh Government College, Mandi, Industrial Training Institute (Women), Mandi, and Government Senior Secondary School, Kamand.

8. A 6-day GIAN (Global Initiative for Academic Network) Course on Adaptronics, supported by the MHRD, Government of India was held at IIT Mandi during 4-9 February 2019 for students of IIT Mandi and other institutes.

An International Workshop on Nano/Micro 2d-3d Fabrication, Manufacturing of Electronic – Biomedical Devices & Applications (IWNEBD-2018) was held at IIT Mandi during 31 October-2 November 2018. The event was inaugurated by Mr. R Subrahmanyam, Secretary, Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India. On the occasion, a state-of-the-art Class 100 clean room facility for device fabrication was unveiled.

IIT Mandi hosted first-of-its-kind Winter School on Cognitive Modeling

2019 in India during 4-10 February 2019. Top international researchers in

Cognitive Modelling from the US, Netherlands and Canada conducted

sessions in person and virtually on theories which deal with how people

think and make decisions, and how these are implemented through

computer simulations.

IIT Mandi hosted an international workshop on Climate Change and Extreme Events in the Indian Himalayan Region (C2E2) during 18-20 April 2019. The workshop aimed at understanding the effects of climate change, melting of glaciers, increased frequency of extreme events, atmospheric pollution, etc. in the Himalayan region.

IIT Mandi celebrated its 10th Foundation Day on 24 February 2019.

The Chief Guests were alumni from IIT Mandi’s first graduating B.Tech. batch

(2009-2013): Mr. Raj Kamal Singh, Mr. Gaurav Yadav, Mr. Saurabh Jain,

Mr. Ishan Singh and Mr. Mohit Kumar Malhotra, all of whom are successful in

their chosen careers.

School of Basic Sciences IIT Mandi organized Discussion Meeting on

Recent Advances in Magnetism (DMRAM) during 14-16 May 2019.

The meeting was arranged for fostering ideas and deeper understanding of the emerging aspects of fundamental and

applied magnetism, a current frontier area in condensed matter

physics research.

IIT Mandi’s Technology Business Incubator (TBI), Catalyst, inaugurated the Startup Exploration Program 2019 on 11 February 2019. Mr. Rugved Thakur, IAS Deputy Commissioner of Mandi, inaugurated the program. IIT Mandi Catalyst is the first TBI in Himachal Pradesh.

A short-term course on Finite Element Method for Engineers and Researchers (FEMER-2019) was organized by School of Engineering, IIT Mandi during 24-28 June 2019 at Kamand Campus. The finite element method provides infinite possibilities for engineering, and this course provided a detailed introduction of FEM and its applications in engineering and beyond.

A 5-day workshop on Applied Deep Learning was successfully organized by

the MANAS group, SCEE, IIT Mandi and BITS Pilani during 1-5 July 2019 at

Kamand Campus. The aim of this work-shop was to bridge the gap between the application and the basic mathematics behind the different cutting-edge deep

learning emerging techniques.

IIT Mandi in collaboration with Control Society organized a Workshop on Learning and Control during 22-26 July 2019. The aim of the workshop was to address the existing need for a sound analytical foundation for machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI) with control theory.

Indian Institute of Technology Mandi Catalyst, the first Technology Business Incubator in Himachal Pradesh, successfully organised the first edition of Himalayan Innovation Challenge for startups and innovators during 25-26 May 2019. The Himalayan Innovation Challenge - Building Solutions for Himalayan Region - is an initiative to actuate a series of innovative technology-based solutions designed specifically to solve social and economic problems in theHimalayan region.

IIT Mandi organized an International Conference on Differential Equations and

Control Problems; Modeling, Analysis and Computations (ICDECP19) during

17-19 June 2019. It was an interdisciplinary combined event and this event provided a common forum where young applied mathematicians

and engineers could learn mathematics for differential equations and control

problems.

Students’ Events: Community Outreach

PRAYAS Teaching Programme for Government School Students (since April 2018): 85 students from 8th to12th grades of Government Senior Secondary School Kamand, Kataula and Nishoo, have been guided and taught by NSS volunteers. Between December 2018 and March 2019, more than 500 students from Government Senior Secondary Schools in Mandi and Kullu districts visited IIT Mandi.

The NSS chapter of IIT Mandi organized a blood donation camp in the North Campus on 5 April 2019.

An interaction session with students of National Blind

Association Kullu was held at IIT Mandi, in which nearly 120 campus residents participated.

IIT Mandi hosted the district-level Youth Parliament on 28 January 2019. Nearly 150 participants and 50 volunteers, staff and faculty members participated.

Fund-raising drives were held on campus for raising funds for the National Blind Association Kullu, the DMJ orphanage (both in August 2018), and for leprosy patients (November 2018).

On World Environment Day-2019, a visit of Eco-club teams of local schools to the Botanical Garden IIT Mandi was organised on 30 th May 2019. About 60 students and 12 teachers from ten local government Senior Secondary Schools (Batheri, Baagi, Kataula, Kamand, Katindi, Ser Chehtigadh, Trayambli, Tihri, Nishu and Naalan) actively participated in the event. The team visited Botanical garden at IIT Mandi as a part of second day of nature’s walk ofenvironment day week.

Cleanliness drive in Mandi Town (31 March 2019): 45 NSS volunteers along with 40 social activists participated in the cleanliness drive in Mandi Town. On 21 October 2018, 30 NSS volunteers visited the Prashar lake area and collected 40 bags of garbage, which they handed over to municipal authorities in Mandi.

Rann-Neeti, the annual sports festival of IIT Mandi, and one of the biggest sports festivals of north India with a footfall of around 1000, was held from 30 September to 2 October 2018. Teams from many places nearby came to play. All the outdoor games are played in Rann-Neeti along with chess.

National Science Day was marked at IIT Mandi on 28 February 2019. This witnessed participation by nearly 150 people, including students and faculty from Vallabh Government College, Mandi, Industrial Training Institute (Women), Mandi, and Government Senior Secondary School, Kamand.

IIT Mandi’s technical-cultural students’ festival, Exodia 2019, was held during 12-14 April 2019 and witnessed enthusiastic participation by over 600 students from educational institutions in Karnataka, Rajasthan, Delhi, Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh.

Mr. Mohammad Amir, Ph.D. scholar in the School of Engineering, received the Best Paper Award at the 3rd Asian Joint Symposium on Aerospace Engineering 2018 (AJSAE 2018) held in Gyeong-Ju, Korea during 31 October-3 November 2018. This was hosted by the Society for Aerospace System Engineering (SASE), South Korea.

Dr. G. Shrikanth Reddy, faculty member in the School of Computing and Electrical Engineering, was honored with the Young Scientist Award by the International Union of Radio Science for his contribution to the field. The award was presented to him during the 2019 URSI Asia-Pacific Radio Science Conference (APRASC-2019), held on 13 March 2019 at New Delhi.

Dr. Shubhajit Roy Chowdhury has been selected as Associate Editor of IEEE Access Journal by IEEE in the year 2018.

Dr. Varun Dutt has been made a member of the editorial board of Management and Business Review (MBR) journal. He has become an Associate Editor of Frontiers in Cognitive Science journal. He has been appointed Review Editor of Frontiers in Decision Neuroscience.

Dr. Siddhartha Sarma and Dr. Narsa Reddy were awarded fellowships under the Indo-Japanese Establishment of Young Researcher Fellowship Programme 2018-19. They visited the University of Electro-Communications, Chofu, Tokyo, Japan. Funding agencies: INSA (India) and JPS (Japan).

Dr. Bharat Singh Rajpurohit has received the IEEE Industry Application Society (IAS) Outstanding Chapter Chair Award 2018 and has become the Chairperson, PES-IAS Society, IEEE Delhi section 2018.

Dr. Syed Abbas was made a member of the Indian National Young Academy of Science (INYAS) for the period 2019-23.

Dr. Chayan K. Nandi received the Chemical Research Society of India (CRSI) Bronze Medal for his contribution to research.

Dr. Rajanish Giri received the Innovative Young Biotechnologist Award (IYBA) 2018. He was selected for this by the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Ministry of Science and Technology.
