PLEASURE AND PAIN !

On Saturday 13 October the exhibition A Fine Line Between Pleasure & Pain was officially opened with an amazing attendance of over 150 artists and art lovers, at Newcastle Art Space Gallery.

Our local artists starred well, with Paterson sculptor Katherine Sullivan’s work Titillation, Donna Cavanough’s Mosquito Diptych and Eric Werkhoven’s sculptures being chosen among some of the best pieces to exemplify the theme, by Newcastle Art Critic Jill Stowell.

John O’Brien was joined by Donna Cavanough to officially open the exhibition with a very entertaining and witty performance.

Next October 2013 another exciting thematic exhibition is planned- Nightmares. No doubt, this subject will have many diverse and revealing interpretations by the artists.

Gresford Cricket Club has a long and proud history. And while the senior members of the club battle it out on the pitch every Saturday of the summer season, a whole new generation of cricketers is learning the art of batting, bowling and fielding with the dream of one day padding up for their club.

Milo Cricket, an introductory cricket program for boys and girls aged 4 to 9 years, is running again for season 2012-13.

Gresford Junior Cricket Club secretary-treasurer Bernadette Collison said the program was about educating children in a range of fundamental cricket skills including hitting, catching, throwing, running, balance and co-ordination. The young players also gain important social skills including teamwork, co-operation, communication and fair play.

Brendan Sellens has taken on the Milo Cricket coaching role, assisted by Dave Jefferson and Dennis Collison, at Gresford Sporting Complex every Saturday from 9am.

For the cost of $30 for the season, the junior cricketers receive weekly coaching as well as a cricket bat, cricket ball, hat, T-shirt, activity book, sticker stumps, Milo sample and a DVD.

The first session was scheduled for November 3. Inquiries: Bernadette Collison on 0408 922 263 or Dave Jefferson on 0429 389 586.

Generations of Gresford residents have been baptised at St Anne’s – the first was 156 years ago. To mark the anniversary of the occasion, the church community is inviting all those connected through baptism at St Anne’s back to the church for a special thanksgiving service. Sixteen-month old Finley Wright (pictured) will also be baptised at the service.

On 23 November, 1856, Lucy Muddle, daughter of George and Alice Muddle, was baptised in the newly-constructed church by the Rev’d J.J. Smith. The first recorded Anglican service was in a store on 26 June, 1843, and attended by 128 people.

Two years earlier Elizabeth and George Townshend, of Trevallyn, had conveyed 181.5 acres of land to Bishop Broughton, the first Anglican bishop. Much of that land remains in church hands, and includes the site of the 1856 church, graveyard, rectory and adjoining paddocks. It is the largest glebe property in the Anglican Diocese of Newcastle.

Fr Stephen, rector of the Anglican Parish of Gresford Paterson, said the occasion of the first baptism was too important to let pass. ‘St Anne’s is dear to many in the community. ‘For more than a century-and-half families have been bringing their children to the church to be baptised so it’s only fitting we recognise the place it has in their hearts.’

In keeping with the special day, Finley Wright, son of Adam and Anna Wright, of Ashtonfield, and grandson of John and Neta Saridis, of Gresford, will be baptised. His four brothers were also baptised in the church, and it is also where his parents were married.

The service, to be held on Sunday, 25 November, starts at 8.30am and will be followed by the regular morning tea and christening cake in the grounds.

We have just visited the most delightful Allyn river garden near East Gresford.

Chris and Julia St Clair have spent the last 13 years creating 5 hectares of stunning native walks, rose gardens, an orchard and a Tallowood forest by the river.

Thirty five enthusiastic garden lovers wandered for a couple of hours, totally in awe of Chris’s achievements and most of it developed during our ten years of drought!

Our next wander will be on Tuesday 20th November at Julia and Chris Wokes historical garden at Paterson. Anyone wishing to join our garden group, please phone Janie Chandler 4938 9189.

Kerouac’s novel was very much a book of its time, with the characters showing a restlessness and desire to live life to the full, that seems to mark post-war generations. The heady mix of sex, drugs, alcohol, jazz and travel is presented in an energetic style, which mirrors the headlong and sometimes aimless actions of Sal Paradise, the narrator, and Dean Moriarty, his driven road-buddy.

It was drizzling and mysterious at the beginning of our journey. I could see that it was all going to be one big saga of the mist. ‘Whooee!’ yelled Dean. ‘Here we go! And he hunched over the wheel and gunned her; he was back in his element, everybody could see that. We were all delighted, we all realized we were leaving confusion and nonsense behind and performing our one and noble function of the time, move. And we moved!

The excitement of the road is tempered by the complexities of real life, so that although Kerouac conveys the rush of the road very effectively, he also reveals the poverty and desperation of the American underclass. He has based the novel on the experiences of himself and his friends, who revelled in the moment, and turned movement into meaning. As we read it, we see the America they saw, in both its grandeur and squalor. It is a vibrant and sometimes bewildering book, that has become an American classic.

Tocal Foundation Day 2012Tocal College celebrates its annual Foundation Day on Friday, 2 November. The day provides an opportunity to commemorate the establishment of the College, the benevolence of the late CB Alexander for bequeathing the property for use and education and the late EA Hunt for his drive and commitment to bring CB Alexander’s vision to reality.

This year’s Foundation Day will see the launch of a book by Ian Dunlop, son of Colin Dunlop, an executor of the Alexander Estate. Mr Dunlop has written a history of how the Estate was administered and how the vision of CB Alexander was eventually put into practice by EA Hunt and the Presbyterian Church.

“The establishment of the College did not just happen,” Dr Cameron Archer said. “It is a fascinating and intriguing story of how an extremely complicated will was written in the first place and how it was eventually enacted. The process took years. “In the meantime, the Tocal property slumbered with the Misses Curtis living in Tocal Homestead with life tenancy from 1947 through to their demise just five days apart in 1985.

“Another theme of this year’s Foundation Day will be farm safety,” Dr Cameron Archer said. “We are putting more and more emphasis on farm safe practices and we would like to demonstrate these changes to those who have an interest in the College.”

Foundation Day starts with a morning tea at 10.30am at the Bruce Urquhart Skills Centre, followed by demonstrations and talks on farm safety and lunch in the EA Hunt Hall, followed by official proceedings. The day includes a surprise revelation for the guests as well. Those who have an interest in the College are welcome to attend Foundation Day but need to phone and advise of their intentions. Phone Val O’Brien on 4939 8865.

q Gresford District Historical Society rEllen Bird’s Allynbrook Wine Bar

FARMERS HOTEL VACY

What’s on ???

Farmers Hotel... where the beer is too good to spill! Ph 4938 8106

Last month we featured the bush christening held at Ellen Bird’s Allynbrook wine bar. This month we visit the wine bar and take a look at its’ background

As far as we know the original owner of the wine bar was a Mr. Towns (a well known land owner of the time) and at this time the building was set some distance back from the Allyn River road. Subsequent owners were McCann, Ned Bird and Ellen‘s husband, Pat Bird.

In 1901 the present building named ‘Reynella’ was erected close to the road at a total cost of £249.

The Bird family held the license for the wine bar for at least 85 years with Ellen very much in charge for 73 of those years. She sold the license to Drayton’s in 1966 when she was then approaching 95 years. At that time she claimed to be the oldest licensee in Australia.

In its hey day the wine bar also provided meals and board. It was also a focal point for news with messages being left for

people who would eventually drop in. Bullock teams, timber cutters, travelling salesmen, stockmen, rabittos, school inspectors and local farmers all stopped – for a drink, a meal or board and often all three! Ellen would charge 2d a head for

Ellen Bird’s wine bar as it was in the mid 1960’s

q “Our Stories” Feature r

Meals were country style – plenty of everything and help yourself. Ellen’s’ son (Morris) tells the story of a burly character who on having a big meal of beef and vegetables, finished it off by consuming an entire plum pudding (to serve 8) for dessert!

The photo shows the wine bar as it was in the mid 1960’s with her licensee sign over the verandah.

The well used car park fronts the Allyn River road. Behind the sign and towards the left of the verandah is the entrance to the long saloon which ran the length of the building. It was always cool and was sparsely furnished with wooden stools down the sides and some shelves displaying the wine selections.

A high timber bar at the end opened on to Ellen’s kitchen and allowed her to easily monitor her customers.

Ellen would only stock McWilliams wines and largely fortified wines at that! With no refrigeration except an ice chest

for the essentials, fortified wines (e.g. port, sherry, madeira) travelled and stored well and were served in practical tumblers.

A modern day traveller looking for a long stemmed glass of “Sauv Blanc” would be met with very blank stares.

As I recall the only soft drinks were R.F. Heads (Maitland) lemonade and dry ginger ale. Bottles of these were stored in a tub of water (for cooling) and to this day I can still recall their strong flavour. The dry ginger ale was particularly astringent and felt as if it was removing the lining from your mouth and throat.

As the Gresford district’s oldest resident (in 1971), Ellen’s 100th birthday attracted quite some attention - including from Buckingham Palace.

She was interviewed by Julie Clark of the Herald and gave a most perceptive interview about her life and times. We will have a look at her interview in the December issue.

The 2013 calendar of the Gresford District Historical Society is now on sale and features “Old Gresford”. It is, (if I say so myself) a collectors item - so get in before they disappear. George Sales, IGA, Everett Mitsubishi, McDonald Bros (Maitland) still have some.

Our Xmas dinner is on Mon 10th Dec (in the evening) at the Twin Rivers Café. Janece McDonald who recently published “Timbergetters, Sawmills and Sawmillers” is our guest speaker. It promises to be a good evening, so make sure you mark this on your calendar.

So far we have not been overwhelmed with YOUR stories and it is YOUR stories of characters, identities and events that add the human factor to our history. We desperately need to preserve them, so, please pick up your biro, write them down and send them in to the Gresford District Historical Society Inc., P.O. Box 88 East Gresford. As an incentive we will give a $10 “bounty” for every one we publish in the Gresford News.

Gresford Vacy Football Club Inc

SUMMER SIXES

Gresford Vacy FC has experienced a very good response to the inaugural introduction of twilight Summer soccer.

Twelve sides have committed to playing in the Summer comp. which will be divided into two grades. Eight sides have elected to play in the Mixed Social/Competitive grade which will be played over 14 rounds and have a point score but no final.

Four teams will slog it out in the Premier League in 12 competition rounds with two rounds of finals to finish off the season.

Both grades will be playing for an “as yet to be determined purse” which will certainly add a bit of spice to the comp. Teams from Gresford, Paterson, Dungog,

Vacy and Clarencetown have thrown their hats into the ring but there’s still room for more. The more teams the greater the purse, the greater the fun.

“Town” and “family” teams, “just friends” and “serious” teams are all part of the action and will be giving their all and sharing the laughs.

Competition will commence on Wednesday November 7th, with all games being played at the Gresford Sporting Complex (“Scorp Park”).

There will be a four week break over Christmas with the second half of the season running from the 23rd January ‘ til the final round on the 6th March.

Games will commence at 6:30pm and 7:10pm for the Social/Competitive grades and 7:50pm for the Premier League.

Registration fees are very reasonable, game duration is two fifteen minute halves, half size fields, unlimited interchanges and the rules are easy to understand.

Weekly game fees will apply, you are allowed to play in joggers but it is mandatory that shin pads be worn.

Give it some thought. It’s a great way to stay fit over Summer! It’s never too late to start.

More information? Contact Damien Crouch 0413305961 or Jim Doyle 0407307800

New Gresford Vacy WebsiteFollow all the Summer 6’s action and check the scores on the newly commissioned website.

Club Secretary, Damien Crouch, has fired up the “Scorpions” website which will eventually contain all the contact details, registration details, competitions and scores, wet weather, club activities and functions, Committee contacts and links to other soccer related matters.

There’s a fair chance that 2013 season player registration may be possible on-line from the website.

Gresford Community Group – AGM & October meeting 2012Community markets’ reportDavid spoke of the long-term future of the markets in view of the listing of ‘Clevedon’ for sale. He did not believe this year’s remaining two markets were in doubt. Martin referred to the high standard of the 80 or so classic cars displayed at the last markets. All stallholders were delighted.

Mumford & SonsThe band’s concert on 20 October at Dungog Showground would be attended by at least 6000 people. A further 700 have elected to camp, and they were likely to be accommodated at the Gresford Showground. The Park Trust is making the arrangements.

Butcher’s Shop The new butcher would be opening for business on 9 October.

Carols by Candlelight The event will be held in Orana Park on 15 December.

President’s report Not as much had been achieved in the last year as the previous 12 months, largely because of the time taken up as a result of the closure of the Community Health Centre (CHC). There had been progress on the skate-park shade and the tree planting program. The attendance of Cr Glenn Wall and his advice on local road works’ funding was helpful, he noted. He also remarked on the quality and profitability of the News.

Presentation of reports Review of the activities related to the CHC, specifically the prospects of leasing the building and the provision of medical services generally, including retention of a part-time general practitioner. There was little prospect in attracting the Raymond Terrace Medical Practice but was more confident of Hunter Medicare Local’s interest.

Treasurer’s report It was noted the hourly hire rate of the hall should be increased from the current $10. But also noted the hall was a community service and should continue to be subsidised by the community group. It would be worth approaching the electricity supplier for a discount.

Post Office delivery follow-upReport on discussions with Sue Forbes, Terese Osmond and Australia Post management. It has been reported that issues were not delivered to householders. It was also not fair to advertisers. It is essential to talk to the delivery contractor, and Martin offered to do this. Suggested an article in the News encouraging people to advise the Community Group if they had not received their copy.Skate Park shading The fabrication of the steel is almost complete. Once the bolt holes have been drilled it will be ready to assemble.

Riverbank actions Operators are being contacted.

Suicide prevention begins with awareness, but the challenge is reading the personal signs, so you can offer your help.

Everyone is invited to SafeTalk, a program which alerts community members to the signs that a person may be considering suicide.

Safe spells Suicide Alertness For Everyone, and the free community event begins 6pm Wednesday 7 November at the Doug Walters Pavilion, Mackay Street, Dungog.

Our night in Dungog is designed to help people look after each other,” Dungog Shire Community Centre manager, Sarah U’Brien said. “Safetalk is designed to equip community members with the training and confidence to initiate the conversations with people at risk of suicide and to keep them safe.” Community based Suicide Prevention Networks are emerging throughout Australia. The Dungog event is an initiative of the Maitland Region Suicide Prevention Network, in a partnership with Hunter New England Health and Dungog Shire Council.

“We are proud of this chance to unite people. It’s a fine community and our own suicide prevention network will make us even stronger,” Mrs U’Brien said.
