WHY GO GREEN?

• We have a limited amount of resources available and more and more people using them up. If we want our future generations to enjoy the same standard of living we've experienced, we need to take action.

• Buildings consume: 14% of potable water 40% of raw materials 39% of energy in the US That's 15 trillion gallons of water and 3 billion tons of raw materials each year! If that's not enough to convince you, here are some other reasons to go green:

• For The Environment Want to make the world a better place? Implementing green practices into your home or office can help reduce waste, conserve natural resources, improve both air and water quality, and protect ecosystems and biodiversity.

• For The Savings Want to make your dollar go further? Green systems and materials reduce energy consumption, which in turn reduce your energy bills. They also increase asset value and profits and decrease marketing time; making your dollar go further for longer.

• For Your Health Want to live healthier? Green building isn't just good for the environment; it's also good for YOU. Sustainable design and technology enhance a resident's overall quality of life by improving air and water quality and reducing noise pollution.

#1 FEAR: GREEN IS JUST A BUNCH OF HYPE

• Fact: True green is anything but hype A lot of misinformation and greenwashing is out there. Companies use “green” in their marketing in order to increase revenue without actually delivering sustainable solutions.

• Real “green” is common sense, and its probably already part of your life, whether you know it or not. The decision to go green is about your commitment to making better choices. Choices that can help save you money and enable a healthier life while conserving energy and natural resources.

#2 FEAR: GREEN IS TOO EXPENSIVE A LIFESTYLE CHANGE

• Fact: Green can save you money over time A green lifestyle is not exclusive to the wealthy. It is a financially smart and healthy choice.

• Simple green actions cost nothing. Think: Reduce, reuse, recycle and instead of spending money you’ll save big especially in the long run. Try taking shorter showers and maybe keep the thermostat a few degrees higher. It can save you hundreds of dollars per year.

• If you do choose to spend money look up local and federal incentives such as tax credits or rebates that save money from the start.

• Using less toxic materials in your home can also save you from future medical bills.

#3 FEAR: GREEN IS TOO DIFFICULT A LIFESTYLE CHANGE

• Fact: Green is about ease and simplicity

• Green is not a complex undertaking. It begins like many important changes, in your mind. It requires us to slow down and focus our awareness a bit differently. It starts with our personal habits and extends throughout our homes.

• Recycling, using less water & energy at home, walking more and driving less is not difficult or impossible. Its as difficult as you want it to be. You don't have to give up your car, clothes or lattes and go live in the forest to be green. You define your level of commitment.

#4 FEAR: GREEN WILL NO BENEFIT ME PERSONALLY

• Fact: Green benefits you directly (and your neighbors too)

• First of all, going green will make you feel good as you contribute to the well being of the whole world. Not a perception, its reality. Do good, do right, live well.. PONO as we say here in the islands.

• Save money by consuming fewer resources and using less energy - material gain.

• Improve air quality for you, family, guests - health gain

• Acting as a steward of the planet for yourself and your family, people will applaud you for your forward-thinking approach.

Page 8: Green Your Home - Kamil Schuetz

#5 FEAR: GREEN WILL NO REALLY MAKE A DIFFERENCE

• Fact: You alone can make all the difference in the world

• What you may perceive as impossible is actually very doable. You just need to consider where and how to begin.

• You are the 1% if you can watch this video on youtube. And as a result, every contribution you make can change the world for the better. Your example and influence can make a huge difference. Watching this program is the first step. You know what Ghandi said, “Be the change you wish to see in the world.”

3 STAGES

THE GREEN HOME MODEL

• Three Green Priorities (WHY) Health, saving money and reducing impact on environment According to studies these are the most important aspects for home owners

• Three Green Elements (WHAT) Air, Energy & Water Most important element is air as we breath it into our bodies and bloodstream. Energy is most important for the money saving aspects and for sustainability, water as it is a dwindling resource

• Three Green Home Zones Inside, Systems & Outside Zone After you establish green priorities each home zone will help you identify actions that impact your home’s air quality, energy usage & water consumption.

HOW TO GREEN YOUR HOME

1. Clarify your green priorities

• We talked about health, money and sustainability but when it comes down to greening YOUR home, you need to determine what is most important to you. Most people will find that a mix of all three areas is suited best for them.

• Clarifying your green priorities is a simple way to organize your thinking around greening your home.

• Take a moment to ask yourself what greening your home will ultimately do for you, your family and the many friends and visitors that will come to your home.

FEDERAL AND STATE INCENTIVES

• Hawaii Energy’s cash rebates help you invest in energy-efficient equipment for your home. These installations quickly pay for themselves and the savings keep coming year after year.

• Water Heating Your home’s largest energy consumer is your electric water heater. When you switch to more energy-efficient options, you can save up to 40% on your electric bill. With Hawaii Energy’s rebate combined with state and federal tax credits, you can save nearly 70% on the system purchase price in the first year.

• Lighting Energy-efficient lighting like Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFLs) use about 75% less energy to produce the same amount of light as old-fashioned, incandescent light bulbs and they can last up to 10x longer. Light-Emitting Diode (LEDs) offer even more efficiency.

• Appliances Switching out your appliances to energy-efficient models will help you save energy and reduce your monthly electric bills. Hawaii Energy offers you rebates to get rid of your old appliances as well as on the purchase of energy-saving appliances that are ENERGY STAR® qualified.

• HVAC As much as half of the energy used in your home goes to heating and cooling. Regular maintenance and exploring other energy-efficient cooling options can have a big effect on your energy savings, electric bill and comfort.

• Housing that is both high quality and affordable can be hard to come by in rural areas. That’s why students from Auburn University are working with Rural Studios to launch a line of attractive homes that can be built for just $20,000! The studio has already built 12 houses, the last of which featured passive heating and a safe-room in the shower, which proved to be necessary after 23 people died in the devastating Moore tornado in 2013.
