General Manager Gavin Wilkinson
avin Wilkinson, a 16-year
veteran of the Timbers organiza-
tion and a former New Zealand
international, serves as the
club’s General Manager. He first
joined the club as a player for the
Timbers’ USL First Division side
in 2001, before taking over as the
head coach and general manager
during the club’s final years in the
second division from 2007-10.
As general manager, Wilkinson
has formed
the Timbers’
deeply
integrated,
vertical de-
velopment
system,
which
includes
United Soc-
cer Leagues
club
Portland Timbers 2 (T2),
the Portland Timbers U-23s
and Timbers Academy teams
(U-18, U-16 and U-14). He was
instrumental in establishing an in-
novative partnership with Oregon
Youth Soccer Association, which
encompasses the statewide
Olympic Development Program
and regional training centers,
as well as the adidas Timbers
Alliance program. Wilkinson also
serves as the general manager
for Portland Thorns FC, the 2013
National Women’s Soccer League
champions.
During Wilkinson’s tenure as
general manager, the club has
won MLS Cup in 2015, an NWSL
championship with Thorns FC in
2013 and a national champion-
ship with the Timbers U-23s in
2010.
During his tenure as the club’s
general manager and head coach
from 2007-10, Wilkinson assem-
bled a 50-29-39 record over four
seasons in the USL First Division/
USSF Division-2 Pro League and
was a two-time USL First Division
Coach of the Year (2007, 2009).
He guided the club to three
postseason berths, including its
only semifinals appearances as a
second-division club in 2007 and
2009. As head coach, Wilkinson
oversaw Cascadia Cup (a fan-
based derby between Portland,
Seattle and Vancouver)
titles in 2009, 2010 and
again in 2012, and was a
two-time recipient of the
FieldTurf Coach of the Year
for the USL First Division (2007,
2009).
He led the Timbers to one of
the best seasons in USL First
Division history in 2009, including
a record-setting, 24-game
unbeaten streak and winning
the Commissioner’s Cup. The
Timbers set a new single-season,
league record with the impressive
streak (14-0-10), surpassing the
previous mark of 15 games set in
2005. The club’s record-setting
run also ranks among the longest
in U.S. soccer history. Finishing
in first place at 16-4-10 (58pts),
Portland was awarded the Com-
missioner’s Cup as the league’s
regular-season champion and
earned a berth into the USL First
Division semifinals.

ead coach Caleb Porter enters his fourth season with the club in 2016 after signing a long-term contract extension on Jan. 27, 2016. Since joining the Timbers in 2013, Porter has compiled one of the league’s top winning percentages among active MLS coaches with a record of 41-25-36 (.578), leading the Timbers to their first MLS Cup title in 2015, two Western Conference Championship appearances and double-digit wins in each of his first three seasons.
Over Porter’s first three seasons, the Timbers have lost the fewest games (25) of any MLS team and have compiled regular-season point totals of 57 (2013), 49 (2014) and 53 (2015). And over that span of time, Portland’s combined point total (159) ranks as the fourth most in MLS, behind only the New York Red Bulls (169), Seattle Sounders FC (167) and LA Galaxy (165). Additionally, Portland has reg-istered a league-best 35 shutouts across Porter’s first three sea-sons, while the club’s 14 road wins the last two seasons rank as the most in MLS over that span.
The 2013 MLS Coach of the Year, Porter coached in his 100th game as an MLS coach against Real Salt Lake on Oct. 14, 2015, posting a record of 39-25-36 in those games, which tied San Jose Earthquakes head coach Dominic Kinnear for the fewest losses (25) in MLS history in a coach’s first 100 career games. In addition, his .570 winning percentage during that span ranks fourth among active coaches through their first 100 games, behind the LA Galaxy’s Bruce Arena (62-37-1, .625), Seattle’s Sigi Schmid (52-33-15, .595) and Kinnear (40-25-35, .575).
Ending the 2015 campaign with a nine-game unbeaten run across all competitions, the Timbers lifted their first MLS Cup trophy with a 2-1 win over Columbus Crew SC on Dec. 6, 2015. Portland finished the regular season with an MLS-club-record 15 wins, while also tying for the league lead in shutouts (13). On the road, the Timbers finished the 2015 season tied for the most road wins (7) in the league.
During his tenure, the Timbers have qualified for CONCA-CAF Champions League twice (2014-15, 2016-17), finished in the top three in the Western Conference in two of his first three seasons and made their deepest run in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, reaching the semifinals in 2013.
Porter was announced as the Timbers head coach on Aug. 29, 2012, and joined the club ahead of the 2013 MLS campaign. Porter received the Slats Gill Award for Sportsperson of the Year at the Oregon Sports Awards on March 9, 2014, becoming the fourth soccer-related figure to receive the award since it was founded in 1957. On Aug. 6, 2014, Porter helped guide the MLS All-Stars to a 2-1 win over German power Bayern Munich in the 2014 AT&T MLS
All-Star Game at Providence Park in Portland. During Porter’s first season with Portland in 2013, the
Timbers assembled one of the biggest turnaround seasons in MLS history, finishing the regular season atop the Western Conference table. In comparison to 2012 totals, the Timbers assembled a 23-point improvement in points and an MLS-record, 43-goal improvement in goal differential. Portland’s five losses during the 2013 regular season tied for the fewest in MLS history in a 34-game season and the Timbers led the league with 15 shutouts. The Timbers recorded a 15-game, home unbeaten streak during the 2013 regular season, posting a league-best 11-1-5 home record at Providence Park and an MLS single-season record 11 home shutouts. In 2014, the Timbers netted a team-record 61 goals while recording the best goal differential (plus-9) of any non-playoff team in MLS history.
Prior to joining the Timbers, Porter, who holds a U.S. Soccer Federation “A” license and an NSCAA advanced national diploma, was one of the most successful coaches in NCAA history during his tenure as head coach at the University of Akron (2006-12). He compiled a career mark of 123-18-17 and was named 2009 NSCAA National Coach of
the Year. Porter led the Zips to back-to-back NCAA College Cup appearances (2009, 2010) and the school’s first national title in any sport in 2010.
Porter’s coaching career also includes time as the head coach of the U.S. U-23 Men’s National Team during 2012 CONCACAF Olympic qualifying and three years as an assistant coach on the U.S. U-18 National Team (2009-11). Porter was an assistant coach for six years (2000-05) at Indiana University, winning two national championships with the Hoosiers.
As a player, Porter was the 27th overall pick by the San Jose Clash in the 1998 MLS College Draft. He spent time with San Jose and the Tampa Bay Mutiny before a knee injury ended his professional playing career in 2000. He also played for the U.S. National B Team from 1996-97, winning a bronze medal at the 1997 World University Games. As a four-time All-Big Ten selection and three-year captain at Indiana, Porter led the Hoosiers to four conference titles and two College Cup appearances. Porter was the runner-up for the 1997 Hermann Trophy.
Porter graduated from Indiana in 1998 with a degree in sports management. He and his wife, Andrea, have three children – two sons, Colin (7) and Jake (5), and a daughter, Stella (4).

“My fiancée and I are huge on restaurants, so we love going to new restaurants. Portland is such a great city for food, so we really enjoy that aspect of it. But, I’d love to get into hiking more. I recently pur-chased some hiking shoes, so once we get into summer that will be
part of the regeneration process for me.”
Portland is definitely a dog friendly city. Where are some your favorite places to walk your dog?“I walk my dogs down on 23rd. My dogs don’t have the greatest stamina, so I can’t go on exten-sive hikes with them. I usually walk down Burnside, make a left down 23rd and head down to a few of the coffee shops in that area. Once a week, I’ll reward myself with Blue Star and hang out there with my dogs.”
Compared to past cities that you’ve lived and played in, what stands out about Portland?“I’ve lived in a few different places with very different cultures. For me, Portland has the best combination of everything that I look for in a city. It’s not an overwhelminglybig city, the culture is great, along with the shopping, food and
outdoors scene. I also love the climate. I think it’s perfect. For me, it just has a little bit of everything.”

What are some of your favorite things to do so far in Portland?
Piazza Italia (1129 NW Johnson St.).
Unbelievable Italian food.
But, Mediterranean Exploration Company
(333 NW 13th Ave.) was extraordinary. It’s some-
what of a Tapas style restaurant,
and it’s incredible.

Among active players, only 15 players have played at least 285 games in MLS, including Portland midfielder Jack Jewsbury and defender Nat Borchers, who have both played over 330 regular-sea-son games in MLS.

The start against New York City FC marked Zemanski’s 75th MLS start since joining the league in 2010.
fter scoring his third goal of the season against FC Dallas on May 11, Diego Valeri recorded his 26th goal with Portland, moving him into sole possession of eighth place on the Timbers all-time list for goals scored across all eras (since 1975). The finish marked the second goal in three games for Valeri, who alsorecorded a goal and an assistagainst Toronto FC on May 1.

lete“Occasionally, we’ll have a few different beers.
Coming to Portland, I had no idea how huge the
beer scene is here. But, I was approached to create
a beer of my own, something that was a beer that
I would drink. So, we got together with them and
did the whole brewing process, which was a lot of
fun. They asked me what I liked to drink in a beer,
which was kind of a lighter IPA, and we also mixed
in some bourbon barrel back into it, which was fun
and helped create a different flavor with the beer.”
There are definitely some dif-ferences when you’re around 25 grown men, compared to a seven-year-old and a four-year-old. So, there’s definitely some differences. But, I think you still go about your busi-ness the same way as you would at home. You try to be a good guy, a good person and a good father, whether that’s on the field or at home.
“I grew up playing
basketball and still
enjoy it in the offsea-
son in my downtime.
When we’re not in
season, I can’t sit
still for too long so I’ll
go to the basketball
court and shoot
around. Recently, my
nephew and I were at
a local gym, and we
were messing around
a little bit, doing
some trick shots and
trying to make half
court shots at the
same time.”
“It’s probably when we lost in 2013
to Real Salt Lake in the playoffs.
Obviously, we were all down as
players, but it was a very memora-
ble moment because I think that’s
the loudest I’ve ever heard that
stadium. Hearing the entire crowd
doing the ‘PTFC’ chant was just
a moment where the community
was still rallying behind us when
were in a moment where we were
down. Obviously the home opener
against Chicago is one that I will
always remember as well.”

PORTLAND TIMBERS 2The level just below the
Portland Timbers first team on the pyramid is T2. Playing their matches in the 29-team USL, T2 was founded on Oct. 14, 2014, and is a fully professional team that creates a bridge between the Portland Timbers U-23s Premier Development League (PDL) side and the Timbers first team. Playing their home games at Merlo Field on the campus of the University of Portland, the T2 roster is comprised of a mix of Timbers first-team players on loan to the club and players that possess many different qualities and come from varied back-grounds. In 2015, MLS-signed players Taylor Peay, Nick Besler, Andy Thoma, Michael Seaton, Jake Gleeson and Anthony Man-ning appeared in 82 matches for T2, gaining valuable experience in the team’s inaugural USL season. In January, Andrew Gre-gor was named head coach for the 2016 USL season. Gregor will lead T2 after serving as an assistant coach during the 2015 season, while also helping guide the Timbers U-16 and U-18 Academy sides for parts of the past two seasons.

adidas Timbers Training Center
50 GREEN & WHITE MAGAZINE / 2016
n April 19, 2012, the
Portland Timbers
unveiled the new adidas
Timbers Training Center,
a state-of-the-art facility,
built as part of a 10-year
partnership with Tualatin Hills
Parks & Recreation District.
The training center features
a natural-grass field and is
the primary on-field training
ground of the Major League
Soccer club. Construction is
complete on a 2,600-square-
foot expansion of the adidas
Timbers Training Center. The
new space includes addition-
al locker rooms, training areas
and office space to serve
the Timbers, T2, the Timbers
U-23s and the Timbers
Academy.
Some of the features of the
adidas Timbers Training Cen-
ter include a 7,000-square-
foot indoor facility, with
locker rooms for the Timbers
first team and development
teams, fully-equipped training
and recently expanded fitness
areas, offices and a spacious
lounge/common area for
Timbers players.

A new grass field was planted in February 2015, while a new turf pitch was installed in early 2015.
The sod was planted in a ver-tically draining, sand-based root zone that includes small amounts of peat and calcined clay to stabilize moisture content and to hold nutrients.
The grass field was built using over 4,600 tons of specialty sand blend and will drain up to 12 inches of precipitation an hour.
The grass field, widely
regarded as one of the
best fields in the state, is a
combination of 75 percent
perennial ryegrass and 25
percent Kentucky bluegrass
that is perfectly suited
for cooler climates and
provides uniform cover, and
greater stability, footing and
durability.
The adidas Timbers
Training Center is located in
Beaverton, approximately
10 minutes from Providence
Park. It also serves as the
training home for the Tim-
bers’ development teams,
specifically T2, the Timbers
U-23s and the club’s Acade-
my teams.
As part of the public/
private partnership with
THPRD, the Timbers
make an annual donation
to the Tualatin Hills Park
Foundation and will conduct
a series of annual youth
soccer camps and coaches’
clinics at the adidas Timbers
Training Center. The training
center also includes a syn-
thetic, FieldTurf field.
