Great Sin (Gunah-e-Kabira):

Sin is that aspect in a Muslim’s life in which he or she makes effort to abstain from at all costs.

Major sins are defined as what is forbidden by Allah and His Messanger in the Quran and the Sunnah.

Shirk(Polytheism )

Page 9: Great sins

Shirk شرك Associating false gods with the One, True God,

or adding partners in worship with Allah (God).

This is a form of Kufur (disbelief in the religion of

God), and any person who does this is not a

Muslim. A person who commits shirk is a

mushrik (polytheist).

Allah says:

[He] who made for you the earth a bed [spread out] and the

sky a ceiling and sent down from the sky, rain and brought

forth thereby fruits as provision for you. So do not attribute

to Allah equals while you know [that there is nothing similar

to Him](Al-Baqarah-22)

Allah says:

Indeed, Allah does not forgive association with Him, but He

forgives what is less than that for whom He wills. And he who

associates others with Allah has certainly fabricated a

tremendous sin.

(Al. Nisa 47)

Allah says:

And [mention, O Muhammad], when Luqman said to his son

while he was instructing him, "O my son, do not associate

[anything] with Allah . Indeed, association [with him] is great

injustice.“

(Luqman : 13)

The Prophet (S.A.W) said;

“Do not commit shirk with Allah, even if you are cut into pieces, or burnt.”

(Ibn Maajah)

Categories of Shirk:Shirk is not of one type and can be put into different categories which each look at shirk from a different view:First:A category that looks at shirk in relation to tawheed.Second:A category that looks at shirk from its various levels.Third:Apparent or hidden shirk. (Munafiqat)

Disobedient to Parents

Disobedient to Parents:The Greater Sin is to be disobedient to one’s

parents as expressly mentioned in the

traditions from the Holy Prophet (Saw). A

tradition of the Prophet (Saw) says that the

greatest sins are Shirk and to be disobedient

to one’s parents.

Allah, the Most High, says:

And your Lord has decreed that you not worship except Him, and to parents, good treatment.

Whether one or both of them reach old age [while] with you, say not to them [so much as], "uff," and do

not repel them but speak to them a noble word.(Al-Isra: 23)

The Prophet (SAW) said;"Allah's satisfaction is the parent's and His

Wrath is theirs.”(Al-Tirmidhi)

"Three supplications are surely acceptable: the supplication of the oppressed, the traveler and the parents against their

children.”(Abu Dawud)

It was related that a man asked the Prophet (SAW);

"Who deserves my service most after Allah?" The

Prophet said, "Your mother." The man asked again, "And

who is next?" The Prophet said, "Your mother." The man

asked further, "Who is next?" The Prophet replied, "Your

mother.” The man asked once more, "And who is next?“

The Prophet (SAW) said, "Your father and then the closer

kins.” (Bukhari)

Murder

Page 21: Great sins

Murder: The unlawful premeditated killing of one human

being by another is called Murder. The fifth Greater Sin is the murder of that

person whose execution has not been ordered by Allah and the Holy Prophet (Saw).

One Murder is Equal to the Killing the Whole of Humanity.

Allah Says;

But whoever kills a believer intentionally - his recompense is Hell, wherein he will abide eternally, and Allah has become angry with him and has cursed him and has prepared for him a great punishment.

(Al-Nisa 93)

Page 23: Great sins

The Holy Prophet (Saw) announced on the occasion of the Farewell Pilgrimage (Hajjatul Wida’):

“O People! It is not permitted to kill the Muslims.

Similarly to appropriate their property is not

allowed. So do not be unjust upon yourselves

and do not revert to disbelief after my death.”
