TWO-WHEEL TOURING“Dad was an Australian champion rider and bikes have always been our life.

I literally grew up on the motorcycle racing circuit, touring the country and riding all the famous race tracks with our bike-crazy family.

Now I get to ride the famous Great Ocean Road and share my passion for bike touring with my passengers. They come from all over the world to ride this beautiful piece of road.

On a bike, it’s pure adrenaline rush, a completely different sensation to car touring.

There are amazing spots to pull over and take in the sights. My pick is the look-out near the Cumberland River, just past Lorne. The ocean often seems at its wildest there – a fitting reward after an epic winding stretch of road.”

- DARREN TAYLOR, The Motogod | themotogod.com.au

A BIG STORYIt’s a big story, the Great Ocean Road region, with its twists and turns, its sub-plots and backstories, its characters and scene-stealing settings.

Anchoring coast, hinterland and lifestyle themes is the road itself, spanning south west Victoria from Torquay to the South Australian border.

It connects unforgettable road touring with a throng of bucket list-worthy experiences.

Whether you tour by car, van or motorcycle, it’s a road trip for the ages.

of a lifetimejourney

It’s about the flow of the corners coming one after the next, the remarkable scenery… the enjoyment of riding a bike how it’s meant to be ridden. - DARREN TAYLOR

HONOURING THE MEN WHO BUILT THE ROAD – CREATION OF ‘THE DIGGERS’ STATUE

building the road

‘The Diggers’ had to capture something that cannot be described with words yet communicates a feeling. Research was crucial to getting it right: clothing, fashion, hairstyles and a sense of the people I was trying to embody. One image I found particularly moved me – a group of men posed before their accommodation barracks with the word ‘courage’ written boldly on a door. It reminded me that these men needed courage, not just to fight in trenches, but to adjust to being back home and working so physically each day on the road. There was a dominant feeling of mateship. Perhaps one of the greatest benefits to the men working on the road was that they were able to stay together after the war. I also focussed on the way the men held their tools, the expression on their faces, and the deep-seated look in their eyes having seen too much. Reading transcripts of letters to loved ones of first-hand accounts of battle-ground life gave a visceral and intimate picture that stayed with me as I shaped the clay.I felt connected to the subject, those feelings naturally translated into the work and the figures became humanised.

- JULIE SQUIRES, sculptor and creator of ‘The Diggers’

> Great Ocean Road Memorial Arch – 5km west of Aireys Inlet, see ‘The Diggers’ sculpture and discover the courageous men who built the road

> Teddy’s Lookout – just west of Lorne, stunning ocean views and tranquil bushland setting perfect for picnicking

> Red Rock – 15km north of Colac, these volcanic plains form part of the lakes and craters precinct of the Kanawinka Geopark. Take a picnic and a camera, the 360-degree views from the dormant volcano are amazing

> Cape Patton Lookout – 5km west of Kennett River, one of the highest lookouts on the road with sweeping ocean views stretching to Apollo Bay

> Cape Otway Lightstation – detour 14km off the road to the region’s most southerly point and some of the speckiest views ever

> Twelve Apostles – 7km east of Port Campbell, win Instagram with a selfie of you and these iconic ocean-bound rock stacks

Lookout love…

GREAT OCEAN ROAD TO LORNE

THE WORLD’S BIGGEST WAR MEMORIAL

Between 1919 and 1932, some 3,000 returned servicemen built the Great Ocean Road as a war memorial for their fellow serviceman lost in World War I. They used explosives, picks, shovels, wheelbarrows and small machinery to carve the 243km route from rocky cliff faces and steep coastal mountains.

Today, the road is a journey of a lifetime, with lookouts affording world-class, panoramic vistas. When you pull over to size-up the view, pause to remember the soldiers lost to war and the men who built the road to honour their mates.

> Johanna Beach (Lavers Hill) On the west side of Cape Otway. Consistent, punchy surf, lots of peaks and good barrels. The untamed understudy venue for the Rip Curl Pro

> Easter Reef (Port Campbell) Bring your board, boat, big wave riding skills and a huge set of kahunas to tackle this booming tow-in break

> Japs (Warrnambool) A powerful beach break. Pumps in moderate swell with northerly winds. Can dish up something truly epic for experienced boarders

IN THE BEGINNING…“Torquay was a sleepy little village when I spent holidays here with my grandparents from around the age of ten.

The first time I board-surfed was in February 1959. I grabbed a board from the surf club and paddled out at Torquay Point. On my first wave, I stood up and rode it all the way in. I can see it like it was yesterday: there wasn’t a footprint on the sand, it was pristine.”

THE SEARCH“My first paypacket in 1963 went towards a surfboard and my beloved VW beetle. My mate John Panozzo and I would drive the Great Ocean Road in search of breaks – Spout Creek, Wye River, Lorne and sometimes Apollo Bay. We surfed them before they were on anyone’s radar.

We’d take the old Jarosite Track, push through the Iron Bark Basin, point the VW down a steep hill and hope we could make it. Then we’d clamber down the Point Addis cliffs with our boards.”

CAMERAS AND COMPANIES“All the while, I focussed my camera lens on the cars, people and waves. In 1966 I bought a Nikon underwater camera, paddled out on my board and became the first to photograph surfers in action from the water.

I carried a camera with me everywhere, capturing waves that were then surfed only by a small, core group of free surfers.

Amongst us were Brian Singer and Doug Warbrick, who founded Rip Curl in 1969, sewing together wetsuits in a garage in Boston Street.”

- BARRIE SUTHERLAND, pioneer surfer and photographer | watermarksphotogallery.com.au

ALL THINGS SURFFrom its origins in the psyches of free surfers in the 1950s and 1960s, Torquay has flourished into a hotspot for all things surfing. Today it’s home to the Australian National Surfing Museum (formerly Surf World Museum), an academy of learn-to-surf schools and a vibrant surf retail experience centred on locally founded, globally significant brands like Rip Curl and Quiksilver.

BLACKMAN’S BREWERY, TORQUAY

Twenty-something Renn Blackman didn’t always want to make beer. But once he did, there was no looking back.

“Ever since my first home brew in uni days, I’ve dreamed about starting my own brewery,” he said.

Over time, the plan came together: a post-graduate in brewing in Fremantle, several years hands-on experience and, now, the opening of Torquay’s Blackman’s Brewery, a co-venture with fiancée, Jess.

“As a craft brewer, I have freedom to experiment, to put my own spin on traditional beer styles,” Renn explained. “I can merge the best features of lager and ale and create something that tastes amazing, even though it won’t necessarily please any award judges. For me, in the end, it’s about the taste and character.”Character, indeed. Current brews include Reginald IPA, named for Renn’s grandfather who shared its big, angry style, and Winnie Cider, a little crazy and effervescent like his great grandma.

Blackman’s Brewery is a combo of eatery and brewery, with beer and food pairings featured on the menu. The glass-walled brewhouse with its shiny copper and stainless steel equipment, is in full view and Renn invites visitors to join him on monthly brew days and daily tours.

“People enjoy watching the process. It’s very technical with lots of formulas and recalculations to be made along the way and I never mind chatting about it.”

Arts &Culture

ART INSPIRED BY NATURE

“Our unique region influences much of the work we exhibit at the gallery”. About 60 per cent of the works we show are inspired by the physical environment. Seascapes, lighthouses and boats feature strongly as subjects.

Right now we’re hanging a new exhibition of Torquay artist Jacki Burke’s work titled ‘A Year by the Sea’. The works obviously reflect Jacki’s surroundings.

Our artists have a mix of traditional and contemporary styles. Some have a whimsical eye and capture unexpected things about a lighthouse or the ocean.

Others are realists and work to mirror the more traditional elements and styles in their paintings whether they’re working in oils, acrylics, collage or mixed media.

Many natural elements of our local environment like frogs, parrots, wrens and sea life are reflected in studio glass, ceramics, wood sculptures, hand-made jewellery and metalware.

We have a strong arts community here in Aireys Inlet and right through the region. Artists, musicians and writers are drawn to the quiet village feel. Here they can hideaway in enclaves in the bush, be inspired by the views and enjoy the peace while the beautiful environment informs their art.

We coax them out for all sorts of arts-related events like our literary festival, music festival and arts trail.”

ERSKINE FALLS – DRIPPING WITH NATURAL CHARMWhat’s more mesmerising? Gazing over a waterfall at eye-level or sizing it up from below? At Erskine Falls, near Lorne, you can do both.

Tumbling 30 metres down a rocky face in a fern-filled rainforest setting, Erskine Falls drips with natural charm. It’s the most popular and most accessible of the regions waterfalls.

From the car park, a 150-metre walk gets you to the first lookout platform where you can soak up the cascade in all its splendour.

For the second act, trek 200-plus steps down deep into the gully for a worm’s eye view of the splash pool and falls.

TEN IN TENErskine Falls is one of ten waterfalls within 10km of Lorne, making it a mecca for waterfall lovers.

This striking temperate rainforest zone is part of the Great Otway National Park and boasts one of the highest rainfalls in the state.

On cooler days, especially after rain, a gurgling fall can transform into a roaring curtain of water, unleashing nature’s pizazz.

LET’S GO CHASING WATERFALLSWith its diverse terrain and coastal margin, the entire Great Ocean Road region is a natural for waterfalls. Typically they offer shady respite from summer days and walkable access through forested settings alive with sights and sounds of wildlife. Keep your eyes peeled for koalas, weird fungi, wildflowers and whooshing native birds.

Whether you picnic, swim, chill-out or cool-off, a waterfall makes for a stunning natural backdrop.

IN THE MOMENT“When people cross the gate at Brae, I want them to experience a little moment away from normality. You need space to do that, not buildings around you. You need trees and water, and a meal that talks of that moment.

As a person working in a creative-based food field, I need

to be constantly inspired. This is quite a natural environment with pristine elements. Working with the land day-to-day, I take inspiration from the surrounding environment and this is represented in the food.

This area is so rich and diverse with its coastline and hinterland. Yet, it’s accessible to Melbourne. There’s a lot happening in Birregurra, a lot of energy and a sense of rejuvenation.

Each day we consider our menu. We have five to six anchor points, dishes we’ve developed. Then we add a lot of other things that represent the moment, the day, the week.

I might wander through the garden and see two or three things growing together and get inspired to combine them on the plate.

The slow growing season in this cooler climate means in March we’re still harvesting traditional summer produce like zucchinis, tomatoes, summer herbs and organic garlic. They’re always better in autumn. We’re using sunflower petals and seeds in our dishes. And we’re looking ahead to what we’re planting for winter, maybe some globe artichokes.

We tend to focus on less commonly known varieties, things that don’t travel so well. The delicate, less commercially grown ingredients mean differentiation on the plate.

I love to cook the food that is going to challenge our customers, always with pleasure being the goal.”

WORLD-CLASS, MUST-DO MOUNTAIN BIKING…

“Within three minutes of my front door, I can be riding awesome world-class single-track,” said Norm Douglas, a mad-keen MTB-er, lured with his wife Jess to make a move to Forrest in 2007.

“Amazing mountain bike tracks surround Forrest, making it a hub at the centre of the activity. That’s unique in Australia. Maybe only ten places in the world are like it. You can check in, park your car and have it all on the doorstep of your accommodation.”

Some 60km of MTB trails radiate out from Forrest, creating a mammoth network in two main zones, The Yaugher Network and the Southern Trail Network. Different trails offer different technical elements and degrees of challenge: jumps, freeride, uphill, downhill, ramps and bridges.

Since relocating to Forrest, Norm and Jess have focussed on MTB personally and professionally, establishing MTB Skills and The Corner Store, a trail-head destination for before and after a ride.

“Living here meant Jess could train every day on top-class tracks and concentrate on her sport. She’s now a three-time winner of the World 24 Hour Solo MTB title and a full-time pro cyclist,” Norm said.

- NORM AND JESSICA DOUGLAS, The Corner Store thecornerstores.com.au

These are the sort of trails that mountain bikers love. They’re not contrived, they’re like a walking path through the natural environment – a ribbon in the dirt, as we call the single-track.

ENCOUNTERS OF THE WILD KINDIt’s dusk. You’re canoe-gliding across a remote forest-fringed lake, the air bristling with birdcalls and eucalyptus aromas. From the water, skeletal-grey tree trunks claw for the sky. Your guide gestures towards a ripple and (at last) you’ve got what you came for… a platypus encounter in the wild.

Welcome to Lake Elizabeth, deep in the Otways near Forrest.

LIQUID ASSETSYou can dip your toes into dozens of lakes and rivers in the Great Ocean Road region. Each has its own character, distinctive setting and a raft of special experiences.

Test the waters – it’s lovely once you’re in.

A MAN AND A LAKE“I first laid eyes on Lake Elizabeth 15 years ago,” says Bruce, operator of Otways Eco Tours. “I’ve never tired of coming here, despite running hundreds of tours. It’s just so visually stunning.”

With a degree in ecology and a life-long love of nature, Bruce has know-how aplenty to share about the lake, the wildlife and the eerie otherworldly environment that makes the experience here unique.

“I’m around nature all the time but, for many people, it takes a bit of an effort to get to a place like this. It’s my job to make that effort worthwhile.”

“We spend about an hour and a half on the lake and see a platypus on 95% of tours. It’s the quiet time, the tranquillity that really captivates people.”

“They almost always see more than they expected to. People tell me they’ll remember it forever.”

- BRUCE JACKSON, Otway Eco Toursplatypustours.net.au

THE AMAZING DIVERSITY OF THE GREAT OCEAN WALK“The Great Ocean Walk is unique to Victoria for the different experiences it offers,” said Scott Crabtree, Parks Victoria Team Leader Visitor Planning. “The ruggedness, the mix of tall Otway forests near coast, high cliffs, quiet protected bays, wide open beaches, small streams, big rivers. The diversity is amazing.”

The walk stretches from Apollo Bay to the Twelve Apostles, embracing the coastline and winding its way through the natural treasures of the Great Otway and Port Campbell National Parks.

“You start in Apollo Bay in a built-up area. As you work your way along the coast there’s a growing sense of remoteness as you shed the urban environment. The challenges increase and there’s a real feeling of journey with the hero reward after your long walk being the majesty of the Twelve Apostles.”

Scott’s favourite memory? Sitting on the grassy knoll at the top of Ryans Den campsite, looking west over the wild cliffs and then eastward back to Cape Otway for incredible views and a soul-stirring sense of how far you’ve come.

My role in planning the Great Ocean Walk was to engage people in the natural environment. It’s all about allowing you to use your senses, touch the plants, feel the rocks, use your nose, your ears and your mouth. Even the great taste of your evening meal cooked at your campsite is part of it.

- SCOTT CRABTREE

WHAT’S TO LOVE ABOUT A LIGHTHOUSE?Is it the connection with nature, the maritime history or the lofty views?According to Paul Thompson, Manager of Cape Otway Lightstation, the universal appeal is different things for different people and it cuts across demographics.

“Lighthouses are typically in beautiful, natural locations,” he said. “There are lots of great stories associated with them, from shipwrecks to social history. People love to learn how early lighthouse keepers survived the isolation, schooled their children, got supplies. When you come to a place like this, you can immerse yourself in that history.”

“Kids just go nuts for a lighthouse. Maybe because they feature in so many kids’ books, there’s a strong visual reference. Once they get here, they literally make a run for the lighthouse.”

Then there are the lofty views, gazing out over untamed seas at one of Victoria’s most remote spots from a lighthouse built atop 70-metre cliffs.

“What if you could stand on top of one of the Twelve Apostles?” Paul said. “This is what it might be like, surrounded by sheer drops and panoramic ocean views.”

LIGHTING THE WAYIn 1846, the local Gadubanud people helped guide Charles Latrobe on his third and successful attempt through the Otways to reach Cape Otway and scout out a lighthouse location. In years to come, the lighthouse helped safely guide shiploads of European settlers to Australia.

Today, visitors to the Great Ocean Road region can explore the delights of a coastline of lighthouse locations and also discover the fascinating indigenous cultures of the people who have belonged to these landscapes for thousands of years.

limestone marvels

When photographer Rod Hyett moved to Port Campbell in 1987 you could access the beach at the Twelve Apostles through a man-made tunnel. Soon the tunnel gate was securely locked forcing Rod to get creative about capturing the iconic rock stacks from sea level.

I considered everything: abseiling down cliffs, getting dropped off by a crayfisherman’s boat. Finally it dawned on me to simply paddle in on a surfboard,” he said.

“This proved tricky. In order to paddle around the headland I needed almost no swell. Then there was the challenge of keeping an expensive and heavy Hasselblad camera and lenses dry whilst being towed behind and tied tenuously to the end of a legrope.”“In the course of several expeditions the swell was always a bit bigger than hoped for, the surfboard too small for the task, darkness descended too soon and always at the back of my mind was the fear of finding park rangers waiting for me upon my return.”

“After waiting for months the moment arrived. It was an amazing, surreal experience being on the vast and isolated beach.” These days, visitors don’t need to run the gauntlet of the rangers. You can access the beach via Gibson Steps and set up an imposing, up-view shot of the off-shore rock stacks. For great images, Rod suggests spending time in the area. “Get out of the car, immerse yourself in some of the remote spots,” he said. “This region is at its best under dramatic conditions, with tempests and storms, and energetic stuff happening.”“Persevere and keep going back to the same spot over and over again, under different conditions, to find that undefined coincidence of the elements of the ocean and the sky.

PORT CAMPBELL NATIONAL PARK AND BAY OF ISLANDS COASTAL PARKGiant, rocky coastal features rule the waves (or vice versa) on this stretch of wild coastline between Princetown and Warrnambool.

Over thousands of years, relentless ocean swells have carved sheer limestone cliffs, towering rock stacks, arches,

islands and blowholes that lure a million visitors a year.

Their visual drama has been photographed from every angle, snapped overhead from helicopters and smart-phoned from viewing platforms, beach and clifftop.

TIMBOON FINE ICE CREAM – AT THE COWFACEAt Timboon Fine Ice Cream, it’s “cow to cone”, with dairy cows literally pasture-feeding in window view of the rural churn-ery.

“We source our milk from our next door neighbour’s cows, our cream from the Camperdown Dairy and churn our ice cream on site at our own property,” says Tim Marwood, co-founder, foodie and some-time dairy farmer.

“Sixteen years ago, we took a leap of faith, went into hock for second-hand equipment and set about creating our all natural ice cream, which we took in vans to regional events, festivals and fairs.”

“We’re sentimental about the eventing side of the business; we grew our brand through those people who queued up in the heat to buy their favourite flavour from one of our vans.”

“Eight years ago we realised visitors were looking for our ice cream experience in Timboon itself. We also wanted to showcase the abundance of producers in our area alongside our own product.”

And so the Timboon Railway Shed and Distillery was born – equal parts licensed restaurant, ice cream scoop-ery and single malt whisky distillery (an artisan producer story in its own right).

“We’re proud of our boutique character,” says Tim. “We’re a slow-burning flame and we’ve always been happiest interacting with our customers at the coalface rather than through a lengthy supply chain.

We understand where we are in the market and the value of our provenance, in terms of our Timboon location and the quality experience that brings to our customers.”

Field to fork. Paddock to plate. Whatever the label, the Great Ocean Road region teems with fresh, local, artisan produce.

sea life

A BOUNTY OF PRECIOUS SEA LIFEFascinating marine life thrives in the diverse coastal environments along the Great Ocean Road’s wild shorelines.

You can look, but not take: scan for remnants of shell-life and sea creatures on a secluded beach, dive to see Leafy Sea-dragons and giant kelp forests or cruise out to meet a seal colony.

Many species are found nowhere else in the world and are safeguarded within protected habitat zones and clever conservation programs.

SeaCreaturefeatures> Meet the Maremmas

(Warrnambool) – in season, join a guided tour to Middle Island to meet Eudy and Tula who guard the local penguin colony

> Cruise to the seals (Cape Bridgewater) – take a 45-minute boat ride and close in on mainland Australia’s largest seal colony

> Catch a sunset bird flurry (Port Fairy) – at day’s end, from September to April, watch thousands of short- tailed shearwaters return to their Griffith Island burrows

> Winter whale watching (Logans Beach) – rug up, bring your binoculars and wait it out for a glimpse of Southern Right Whales in the wild

‘ODD’ TIMES FOR PENGUINSMiddle Island Penguins will hit the ‘big screen’ in a family movie ‘ODDBALL’ late 2015.

It’s the story of Allan “Swampy” Marsh and his Maremma dog Oddball. Swampy convinced local authorities to allow Oddball to protect a colony of Little Penguins on Middle Island from wild cats and dogs.

Phil Root has been Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village’s gardener for 22 years. Two years ago he added “dog handler” to his position description, and no one was more surprised than Phil.

“I’d never heard of Maremma dogs, or that they’d been used in Europe for centuries to protect animal herds from foxes and wolves,” he said.

Eudy and Tula are Phil’s charges – seven year-old sister Maremma dogs who protect Middle Island’s Little Penguin fledglings from foxes during the October-April breeding season.

Most days, Phil swims out to Warrnambool’s Middle Island, which is off limits to the public.

“The water depth varies from over my head to waist or ankle deep. I allow about an hour and a half a day to feed, groom and walk the dogs. Sometimes I swim dragging two half-filled 20-litre canoe drums of fresh water and bulk dog food.”

Phil also escorts Eudy and Tula back and forth to the island, swimming or wading through the surf, depending on the tide and season.

“They don’t like the white water; they prefer it calm. Every now and then, we’ll be on the beach ready to go, they’ll look out at the breaking surf and just refuse to go in. That independent nature is what makes them work so well as guardians on the island.”

Under Eudy and Tula’s protection, Little Penguin numbers on Middle Island have thrived, growing from an estimated 10 in 2005 to 180 in recent times.

Penguin colonies can also be spotted at the Twelve Apostles and London Bridge.

“We thought Tiger Quolls were extinct from The Otways, until we rediscovered them in 2012.

We had a phone call from a couple holidaying in Lorne who thought they’d sighted one on their cabin deck a couple of nights earlier.

By chance, they retrieved a left-behind scat (poo), which we sent off for DNA testing. Incredibly, the test confirmed it was a Tiger Quoll.

Two weeks later, a guy from a Parks Victoria group working on the Great Ocean Walk development between Aire River and Cape Otway dropped off a scat that he and his workmates had joked about being a Tiger Quoll’s.

A long shot – but we sent it for testing and it came back positive. How crazy is that? No evidence of the species here for ten years and, within a fortnight, we had not one, but two confirmed samples.

We knew that with greater understanding we could help restore Tiger Quolls and other threatened species. We needed a more active

detection method to help us survey and genetically research the low-density Tiger Quoll populations across the vastness of The Otways.

That’s where the Otway Conservation Dogs help us. We have five qualified dogs and two more on the way.

The dogs live with their handlers as pets and lead ‘double’ lives as conservation dogs. They’ve been specially trained to detect Tiger Quoll scats in wild habitats.

Together with a community hotline and a network of remote motion sensor cameras, the conservation dogs will help us collect the genetic evidence, images and data we need to map the habitat usage.”

DRIVING DISTANCES & TRAVEL TIMESTravel times are a guide only and may vary due to the scenic winding nature of roads and different weather conditions. The region is best enjoyed at a leisurely pace with lots of detours and stops!

Expect travel times to be longer during peak season. Share the drive – don’t do the Great Ocean Road from Melbourne in one day. Take your time, make the moment last.

GREAT SOUTHERNTOURING ROUTE

VICTORIA · AUSTRALIA

GEELONG • GREAT OCEAN ROAD • GRAMPIANS • BALLARAT

This magical journey through some of the most exciting, enchanting and exquisitely different landscapes in Australia is found in the south-west of Victoria.

Marvellous Melbourne, the cosmopolitan capital with its dramatic towers, art galleries, restaurants and great shopping, is a natural starting and finishing point.

Travel south-west to Geelong an energetic and sophisticated city with a laid-back foodie culture in its backyard.

The romance of the Great Ocean Road, with its rugged coastline, lush forests and overpowering sense of freedom, is an unforgettable experience.

The soaring mountains of The Grampians National Park have been the spiritual heartland of the Aboriginal people for tens of thousands of years.

Ballarat and its goldfields are a heady mix of the romance and majesty of the 1850s gold rush and a whole range of modern treasures.

Native Australian wildlife abounds across the region, including kangaroos, koalas, platypus, native birds and Australian wildflowers.

One of the world’s great coastal drives - natural attractions, coastal scenery, history and heritage - all in a flexible, compact, touring package.
