Best Win-Loss records don’t always result
in championships – as the Patriots proved
by winning the Great Lakes Cup with a 68-
52 record as compared to the Milwaukee
Chiefs at 78-41. After loosing the first two
games of the Series, Rochester rallied to
win 2-1, 11-3, and 6-3 to take the Cup.

The Milwaukee Chiefs, on the other hand,
were the accepted favorites all season, but

Lions Wolf and Wolves Nava Suspended
for Fight:
The league office has suspended Rob Wolf
of the Lions and Ramón Nava of the Wolves
9 games for their part in the scuffle between
the two teams yesterday at Kings Stadium.
Looking at his season stats, Wolf has
compiled a .302 batting average and a .377
on-base percentage, while hitting 2 home
runs and driving in 39 runs.
This year Nava has worked 161.2 innings
with 30 strikeouts en route to a 7-11 record
and a 4.06 ERA.
Terriers Sexton Suffers 4-Game Suspension:
The Toledo Terriers were not very happy with
the home plate umpire in today's loss to
Kalamazoo at Ballpark of Toledo. One in
particular -- Bobby Sexton. Upon being called
out on strikes, the Terriers right fielder gave the
ump quite an earful. For that, the man in blue
gave him the thumb and sent him to an early
shower.
But the disgruntled Sexton lingered on the field
for another five minutes, berating the umpire.
Finally his manager got him off the field and into
the clubhouse.
But it got worse after the game, when Sexton told
reporters, "He was blind today. They played
'Three Blind Mice' for him. If he doesn't know
the words to the song, I'm sure we can get it in
Braille, so he can follow along."
For his escapades and after-the-game oration, the
league office suspended Sexton for 4 games.
For the year Sexton has hit .296 with 3 home
runs, 32 RBIs and scored 44 runs.

Patriots Crowned Champions: The Rochester Patriots concluded the season
in grand fashion -- they won the Great Lakes Baseball League Great Lakes
Cup. They nailed it down at Milwaukee Grounds by whipping the Milwaukee
Chiefs 6-3 to win it all. They took the series 3-2.
Their motto for the season was "Win or Die Trying."
"They never let up and they never stopped trying the whole season," the
Patriots manager proudly told reporters. "They hustled and fought the whole
season and it continued in the playoffs. They are a very special bunch of
guys."
To get their 2nd league crown, the Patriots finished the regular season in the
Eastern League with a 68-52 record, ending up in first place in the division
standings.
EL Top Manager is Cooper of Rochester: The Rochester Patriots called a
press conference to announce that field manager Ryan Cooper had been
named Eastern League Manager of the Year earlier in the day. Staffers
congratulated the 55-year-old baseball guru as he approached the podium.
"This city has allowed me to craft a winning ball club," said Cooper. "When
you take on a new job, there's always some adjustment period, but everyone
here has been cooperative. From the bat boys on up. Here's to many more
successful seasons for the Rochester Patriots!"
Cooper led Rochester to a 68-52 record this year and a first place finish in
the Eastern League.
WL Top Skipper is Hendrix of Milwaukee: The Milwaukee Chiefs had an
outstanding season, much of it due to their astute and gifted skipper. For his
managerial excellence, Steve Hendrix reaped the reward of being voted
Western League Manager of the Year.
"A manager is only as good as the players he's managing," Hendrix told
reporters. "If I didn't have the talent to work with, making all the right moves
wouldn't have helped a bit."
Under Hendrix the Chiefs finished first in the Western League with a record
of 78-41.

Pogrebnichko Grabs EL 1902 Rookie Honors:
The top Eastern League rookie in 1902 was Cleveland
left fielder Ruslan Pogrebnichko. He's the latest winner
of the Eastern League Rookie of the Year Award.
During his first year in the league, the 23-year-old
Pogrebnichko hit .332 with 130 hits, 3 home runs, 54
RBIs and 42 runs scored. He also walked 42 times on
his way to a .395 on-base percentage.
Best Rookie Trophy Presented to Holman:
What a season it was for Milwaukee's Dennis
Holman in this new star's first year in the Western
League. He put together a year that earned him the
1902 Rookie of the Year Award.
The 22-year-old left fielder crunched some good
numbers with a .277 batting average and a .342 on-
base percentage to go with his 1 home run, 64 RBIs
and 56 runs scored.
ROOKIE OF THE YEAR
1902 EL Most Valuable Pitcher Award Chosen:
The Most Valuable Pitcher Award for 1902 has
been presented and the Eastern League winner is
Lee Thomas of Rochester.
"It's always nice to receive an award like this," said
Thomas. "I just hope I can improve on my
performance next year and be in the running
again," the Patriots star told reporters.
Thomas excelled with an impressive 20-10 record
in 30 starts. In 264 innings he yielded 234 hits and
26 walks, while striking out 129 and compiling a
fine 2.22 ERA.
WL Most Valuable Pitcher Award Goes to
Stevens:
Erik Stevens had a marvelous 1902 season. The
Milwaukee mound mainstay garnered the most
votes and has been named the WL Most Valuable
Pitcher Award honoree.
The Chiefs star dominated his opposition, finishing
with 21 wins, 8 losses and a 1.66 ERA. In 30
starts he worked a total of 265.2 innings, striking
out 99, while walking 40. Other clubs managed to
hit only .232 against him.
OUTSTANDING PITCHER
1902 Best Batter Picked By EL:
1902 was a very good year for Rochester Patriots
second baseman Eric McBride, this season's
Eastern League Most Valuable Hitter Award
recipient.
McBride hit .378 with a .434 on-base percentage.
He had 185 hits, 15 doubles, 12 triples, 1 home
run, 59 RBIs and scored 78 runs.
Roger Jordan Gets Best Bat Trophy:
Kalamazoo's Roger Jordan put the wraps on a fine
campaign today by winning the 1902 Western
League Most Valuable Hitter Award.
The 32-year-old veteran scorched the opposition
with a .333 average, picking up 138 hits, 19
doubles, 3 triples, 3 home runs and 46 RBIs, while
scoring 55 runs.
MOST VALUABLE HITTER
Eric McBride Claims EL Batting Title:
When it came to hitting in the Eastern League this season,
none did it better than Eric McBride of the Rochester Patriots.
He surpassed all his peers with a .378 average to take the
1902 batting crown. The 23-year-old shortstop had 185 hits,
including 15 doubles, 12 triples and 1 home run. McBride
participated in 120 games and also chipped in 59 RBIs and
scored 78 times.
Gómez Leads WL Hitters:
Milwaukee catcher Eduardo Gómez batted .338 to capture the
1902 Western League batting championship.
The 28-year-old batting star collected 151 hits, 20 doubles, 2
triples and 2 home runs for the year. In 111 games Gómez
totaled 62 RBIs and scored 54 runs.
Gold Glove Award Winners in EL Announced:
"Hit 'em where they ain't" is a great hitting philosophy, but it doesn't
always work when a fielder can seemingly appear out of nowhere to
make the play. These magicians are often taken for granted as the
season grinds along, but today they take center stage. The Eastern
League Gold Glove Award selections for 1902 are:
Pitcher: Jim Sowder (Cleveland Barons)
Catcher: Derrick Craig (Buffalo Electrics)
First Baseman: Friedrich Rippner (Syracuse Spartans)
Second Baseman: Eric McBride (Rochester Patriots)
Third Baseman: Peter Simmons (Hamilton Cardinals)
Shortstop: Tom Hooper (Cleveland Barons)
Left Fielder: Tommy Burks (Rochester Patriots)
Center Fielder: Ienobu Fujiwara (Syracuse Spartans)
Right Fielder: Spencer O'Mulhill (Toronto Giants)
WL Rewards Top Defenders for 1902:
Who are the Gold Glove Award winners? They are the guys that
steal outs. They make spectacular plays, but they also consistently
make the routine plays. This year in the Western League these
defensive stalwarts made a name for themselves with their gloves:
Pitcher: Nicholas Brinkworth (Toledo Terriers)
Catcher: Marvin Wolfe (Toledo Terriers)
First Baseman: Bobby Castillo (Toledo Terriers)
Second Baseman: Daryl Flowers (Chicago Eagles)
Third Baseman: Greg Paul (Kalamazoo Lions)
Shortstop: Michael Ferguson (Grand Rapids Wolves)
Left Fielder: Dennis Holman (Milwaukee Chiefs)
Center Fielder: José Muñóz (Milwaukee Chiefs)
Right Fielder: Bryan Fisher (Kalamazoo Lions)
Patriots Chill Prince's Hottest Hitting Streak of 1902:
Elvin Prince's hit streak ended at 27 games today as the Giants center
fielder went 0-for-4 in a 8-2 loss to the Patriots.
"It's one of those things," Prince said. "It just didn't happen. I guess it was
my day not to get a hit."
This year Prince is batting .329 with 75 hits and 1 home run. He has
scored 34 times and has batted in 28 runs.
Richards Swats Record-Breaking Home Run:
It has been a special season for Stanton Richards. The Detroit Stars' left
fielder continued to hit the ball hard, setting a new standard for home
runs in a single season. Richards launched home run number 7 today at
Ballpark of Detroit. The blast broke the record set previously by Bill
Harris.
Stanton Richards flied out in the 1st, walked in the 3rd and homered off
Sam Myers in the 5th.
So far this year Richards has hit .287 with 7 home runs, 44 RBIs and 63
runs scored.
McBride Cracks Record-Setting Hit:
Eric McBride of the Rochester Patriots has reached the top of the charts
in baseball. He now has the most hits in a season -- a new league record.
McBride put number 167 in the scorebook in a game at Spiders Ballpark
to pass the previous record holder, Blake Taylor. Speaking to the press
after his record-breaking game McBride said, "Hitting a baseball is a
God-given talent. I'm just thankful He blessed me."
Eric McBride grounded out in the 1st and singled in the 4th.
McBride is currently batting .387 with 1 home run and 51 RBIs.
Manager José Martínez Booted out in Buffalo:
Some choice words were used at the Buffalo Electrics press conference
informing the public manager José Martínez was fired today. The owner
was quoted as saying, "Maybe I didn't want to admit that I made a
mistake. To be quite frank with you, I'm firing him for cause now, I'm not
firing him for anything else other than cause. I reached a point where I
felt the best thing to do was to make a change. It hurts because I picked
the guy. I picked the wrong guy. This is regretful, but I thought it was best
for the Electrics. And I wanted to make it work, because I want the
Electrics to do great. Someone said to me the other day, a newspaperman,
'Why don't you tell us your side of the story? Why don't you tell us what's
happening?' And I said to him, Look, I don't want to win in the press, I
want to win on the field." And with that the press conference ended.
Skipper Sorensen Cut by Lions:
Weeks of speculation were officially ended today when it was announced
that Calvin Sorensen has been dismissed as the manager of the
Kalamazoo Lions. Sorensen told BNN, "I can't really say I'm surprised, I
saw this coming for a while, but I guess there was nothing much I could
really do to prevent it. It's not easy to manage when every decision you
make is closely scrutinized and criticized, but that's what I dealt with."
A team official said the firing was the end result of "major and
irreconcilable differences of opinion" between Sorensen and the front
office. When pressed for more information, the Kalamazoo general
manager skirted the issue. "We're not going to get into that right now. It's
not really important why he was fired -- we're just going in a different
direction," he said. BNN originally reported Sorensen's tenure with the
club was in jeopardy three weeks ago, but at the time the team's GM
dismissed the murmur as "just a rumor."
