In May, we celebrate Europes day. This type of association of countries called the

European Union (EU) is the only one in the world, but what are its objectives? Find some

    here below

    Solidarity

After the Second World War some countries got together to consolidate peace.

Nowadays the EU is much larger, it consists of over 25 countries and about 480 million

inhabitants. Some countries are richer than others. The richer ones, mainly situated in

Western Europe, help the poorer ones.

    Working together

European companies and entities often work together to be more efficient. For example,

the airplane builder Airbus was founded by the French, the British, the Germans and the

Spaniards. The member countries also collaborate in the field of scientific research.

    Protection

The European police forces work together to improve security. The EU also takes care of

health aspects making laws applying to medicines, for instance. In addition, it protects the

environment: it obliges factories to pollute less and forbids the hunting of wild animals.

    And frontier suppression

A citizen of the European Union can work and continue his/her education in the

European country of his/her choice: its a bit as if there werent any frontiers. He/she can

vote in no matter which EU country in local or European elections.

    Example:

    0. a) There are other associations of countries that have the same characteristics as the

European Union.b) There is an association with the same characteristics as the European Union in

some other parts of the world.

    c) The European Union has some characteristics that make it be unique as an

    association.

    1. a) The European Union was conceived to put an end to wars in Europe.

    b) The European Union could not stop the Second World War.

    c) The European Union was founded on exclusively economic reasons.

    c) The number of members of the European Union has never changed.

    3. a) European Union members work together although this makes them be slower.

    b) Working together makes it possible for European Union countries to obtain better,

HOW DOES THE GLOBAL POSITIONING SYSTEM (GPS) WORK?

GPS satellites rotate at about 20,000 km from earth and go around the earth in

12 hours. Every single part of the earth is observed by at least four satellites of the 24 that

orbit around the earth. Each one sends radio messages with the departure time of each

message. This hour is given by an extremely precise atomic watch.

A GPS receptor decodes satellite messages. It calculates and notes on its screen where

the car is. On the road, for example, your GPS receptor has the position of the space

satellites in its memory and the road maps. These are regularly updated by satellites to

add any changes. When you switch on your GPS, it identifies the four satellites above it and it positions

    itself in relation to them.

As the GPS knows where the 24 satellites are, it can calculate where exactly its position

on earth is. The satellites are constantly moving and the car is also moving so your GPS

recalculates its position about a hundred times a second. On the screen map, the location

of the car is also in motion.

There are control stations all over the earth. Each one supervises several satellites. This

way, all the stations can see all the satellites at any time.

    Example:

    0. a) GPS satellites never change their position.

    b) GPS satellites travel around the earth and are constantly moving.

    c) Some GPS satellites rotate around the earth in less than 10 hours.

    1. a) Some parts of the earth are not accessible to GPS satellites.

    b) Some parts of the earth are seen by more than four satellites.

    c) There are four GPS satellites to observe all the earth.

    2. a) It is impossible to know when GPS messages are sent.

    b) It is only possible to know when messages are received.

    c) The exact time a message is sent by a GPS can be known.

    3. a) Any modifications are sent by satellites and reflected on the GPS map.

    b) Some changes on roads are sent by satellites and some others are registered by

    the car itself.

    c) Satellites send changes on roads at specific times of year.

    13/32

    5

    4. a) The GPS in a car needs the satellites above it to identify its location.

    b) A GPS in a car is constantly positioned in relation to all the satellites moving

    around the earth.

    c) When the GPS is off there is still contact between it and the satellites.

    5. a) In some places GPS dont know what their approximate or exact position is.

    b) A GPS incorporates new information as it moves.

    c) Recalculating the position of a GPS takes a long time.

    4. Contesteu breument les preguntes segents:

[2 punts: 1 punt per cada resposta correcta]

    a) Do you think it can sometimes be dangerous for a driver to use a GPS in his/her car?

    4. a) The GPS in a car needs the satellites above it to identify its location.

    b) A GPS in a car is constantly positioned in relation to all the satellites moving

    around the earth.

    c) When the GPS is off there is still contact between it and the satellites.

    5. a) In some places GPS dont know what their approximate or exact position is.

    b) A GPS incorporates new information as it moves.

    c) Recalculating the position of a GPS takes a long time.

Us proposem algunes respostes, per tamb es considera correcta qualsevol altra que

sigui coherent i demostri la comprensi del text.

    a) Do you think it can sometimes be dangerous for a driver to use a GPS in his/her car?

Yes, it can be dangerous because it can distract you / it can stop you from paying

attention to the other cars / people dont pay attention to the road when they

    are looking at the GPS

    O b:

No, I dont think its dangerous because it is a machine that is different from a

TV, drivers dont look at it all the time / the voice explains where to go and you

dont have to look at it all the time

    b) What is more necessary in a car, a GPS or a mobile phone?

A mobile is more necessary when there is an emergency and you need to get in

touch with an ambulance or you cant find your way / you have got lost and

    need to contact the police

    O b:

A GPS is more necessary than a mobile because it shows you where you are and

a mobile doesnt / it takes you to your destination
