These grants, for basic research in the natural and physical sciences at 57 colleges and universities, bring the year's total to a hefty $3.1 million. The awards were made under both of the foun dation's Gr ants Program sub- divisions: $238,054 was devoted to 19 Cottrell College Science Grants, and $616,585 will fund 48 Cottrell Research Grants. The first program supports re- search in the natural sciences at pri- vate undergraduate institutions. The second-Cottrell Resear ch- aids work in the physical sciences at graduate uni- versit ies and public undergraduate in- stitutions. The approval rate for grants applica- tions presented at the committee meet- ing was somewhat lower than at some previous sessions: about 43 percent of applications pr esented won committee approval. Applications still pendi ng will be considered at the first meeting in 1983, to be held in February. The fol- lowing grants have been made as a result of actions taken in October. 3 1lJ .... These grants,for basic research in the natural andphysical sciences at 57 colleges anduniversities, bring the year's total to ahefty $3.1 million.

Th e awards were made under both ofthe foun dation's Grants Program sub­divisions : $238,054 was devoted to 19Cottrell College Science Grants, and$616,585 will fund 48 Cottrell ResearchGrants. Th e first program supports re­search in the natural sciences at pri­vate undergraduate institutions. Thesecond-Cottrell Research-aids workin the phys ical sciences at graduate uni­versit ies and public undergraduate in­stitutions.

The approval rate for grants applica­tions presented at the committee meet­ing was somewhat lower than at someprevious sessions: about 43 percent ofapplications presented won committeeapproval. Applicat ions still pendi ng willbe considered at the first meeting in1983, to be held in February. The fol­lowing grants have been made as aresult of actions taken in October.

In addition to assisting withthe evaluation and licensing of new tech­nology, Dr. Coyne will help the foun­dation expand its technology transferefforts.

Supplementing its patent licensingactivities, Research Corporation willuse venture capital and entrepreneurialtechniques to develop inventions underplans now being formulated.

A native of Olathe, Kans., Dr. Coynegraduated from the Universities of Kan­sas and Pittsburgh, and holds an MBAas well as degrees in chemistry. After anumber of years in the petrochemicalindustry, he joined Gulf Oil Corpora­tion in 1963. An executive with GulfScience & Technology Co. from 1975until 1982, Coyne held posts as Man­ager of Marketing Research and Man­ager, Technology Transfer, and servedas Washington representative.

Dr. Coyne is a member of the Com­mercial Development Association andimmediate past president, and memberof the American Chemical and Licens­ing Executives Societies.

Foundation Counsel toGuide Invention PatentingJerome (Jerry) M. Teplitz has beennamed in-house patent counsel for Re­search Corporation's Invention Admin­istration Program. He will oversee thefiling of patent applications and theirprosecution by outside firms retainedby the foundation. Teplitz joins attor­ney Robert J. Sanders, Jr., who has beenmade General Counsel.

Mr. Teplitz, trained both as a chemi­cal engineer and an attorney, served asan examiner at the U.S. Patent andTrademark Office before undertaking acareer in industry and later in privatepractice. Prior to joining Research Cor­poration, he was patent counsel for Uni­versity Patents, Inc. of Norwalk, Conn.

and a member of the firm of Holmanand Stern of Washington, D.C.

He is registered to practice beforethe U.S. Patent and Trademark Office,and is admitted to the Illinois, Mary­land and Federal Bars, and the Courtof Customs and Patent Appeals.

Patent Associate Retires;Expert on PharDlaceuticalsAbraham Bavley, a research scientistand prolific inventor with over 60 pat­ents in such fields as color photogra­phy, pharmaceuticals and chemical pro­cesses, has retired as a professionalstaff member of Research Corporation'sInvention Administration Program.

Dr. Bavley, a Harvard-educated or­ganic chemist well known in both busi­ness and academic circles, came to thefoundation in 1974 following a careeras an industrial scientist and executivefor such firms as GAF, Philip Morrisand Marion Laboratories, and as afacuity member in pharmaceutics forthe Universities of Tennessee andMissouri.

During his years at Research Cor­poration, Dr. Bavley evaluated most ofthe drug inventions submitted to thefoundation, including a number thatlater proved successful. Although re­tired, he will remain a consultant to thefoundation on pharmaceuticals re­viewed for patenting and licensing.

Foundation AnnualReport Due in MarchThe Research Corporation annual re­port for 1982 is planned for March1983 publication and will be availableby early spring to all those requesting it.

In contrast to the reports of recentyears, published in January, the newoffering will be illustrated and will fea­ture in-depth coverage of especiallyinteresting grants and invention admin­istration projects.

Royalties received from patentsassigned to the foundation are ap­portioned among the inventor, theinstitution and Research Corpora­tion, with the institution's patentpolicy determining the inventor'sshare. The foundation's share is usedto help support its Grants and In­vention Administration Programs.

The Quarterly Bulletin is pub­lished three times yearly, with theAnnual Report constituting a fourthissue. Articles may be quoted inwhole or in part with credit to Re­search Corporation.
