HEART OF THE MATTER AND THE POWER OF WE

Greetings Dear Sisters, The Scroll puts the Spotlight on our Interna-tional Order the Daughters of Penelope and opens the doors for our Chapters, District’s to tell their stories and allows them their well-deserved (bragging rights). I am looking forward with anticipation for our next edition of the Scroll, I cannot wait to read what all the Chapters and District have been up too. Every year brings more than its fair share of triumphs and challenges. It is with much pride as your Grand President that I say to the members that you are involved interna-tionally in national and community projects all thru the year. The Daughters are no stranger to the art of giving and they do not wait for any special season to generate their generosity and good works.

I would like to leave you with this thought as we bring this 2017-2018 fiscal year to a close, I simply say thank you for your support. I encourage you to strive for Progress not Perfection. Continue with your projects and community service and follow your dreams. A dream doesn't become reality through magic; it takes passion, determination and hard work, which comes directly from the HEART. In closing I am looking forward to seeing you at your District conventions. One of my personal goals is to express my gratitude to our Sisters in person, for all they do and have done for the Daughters of Penelope. Thank you DAUGHTERS from all over the world for the good people you are.

A Song for My Sisters -- by Jessie Farnham

A sister is a heritage different from the rest, A sister is a blessing that makes one doubly blest

A sister is a segment of yourself, a given part that come what may of joy or storm. She never leaves your heart.

A sister is a special gift GOD minted from the sun.

How do I know these things so well? He gave more than one.

Sincerely yours,

In Theta Pi,

Eva Jean Fomalont Grand President

Citrus District No. 2

By Ourania Stephanides, District Governor

Citrus District 2 is Off and Running!

D2 Secretary Patty Didik and D2 Governor Ourania Stephanides say Hats Off/On!

http://limbitless-solutions.org/index.php/en/

Limbitless Solutions, a National Project, is homegrown from the state of Florida, originating from the diligence to help others, by our own Grand Zone II Governor, Stella Sirks. Pelion Chapter#189 of Orlando held a Kentucky Derby Party at Brio Tuscan Grille in Winter Park, FL to raise money for Limbitless Solutions. There were games, prizes, elegant hats, and tasty treats of food and beverages, with fun by all. It was special because everyone was a winner for giving to our National Project, supporting another sister chapter’s efforts, and most importantly for helping children with needs, who are the real winners!

Citrus District 2 also found a venue for coming together as a family by attending Greek Heritage Night at Amalie Arena for an exciting Tampa Bay Lightning Bolts game. It was a night of AHEPA Family togetherness and was well attended by Daughters, Maids, AHEPANS, and Sons. It was an event for all ages with several chapters represented. We were featured in several photo shots on the big screen showing our “Opa” signs and spirit!

On May 5th, the District celebrated our annual Spring Luncheon where each Chapter reports on their accomplishments for the year. It was a great turn out, with two members of our newly activated chapter, Chryssida # 438 joining us as well. A great time was had by all.

Washington, DC Submitted by Patricia Jenkins, Chapter President

Hermione Chapter 11 is pleased to announced that our 2017-2018 Penelope of the Year is Helen Koustenis. She has been a dedicated and active member since 2007. At one time our chapter had a knitting group. Helen has unfailing continued the tradition and knits hat and scarfs to be used by shut-ins, homeless, and other needy areas of our community. Her beautiful hats, scarfs, and blankets have been donated to Penelope House, child in the Washington, DC area, and wounded veterans at Bethesda Naval Hospital. She has a strong commitment to her church, her community, philanthropy, and of course, our chapter. During our May meeting we also elected our 2018-2019 board. Looking forward to growing our chapter and adding new programs and events.

Hermione Chapter 11 would like to extend a special thank you to Sister Constantia Dedoulis for taking on the job of coordinating our end of the year meeting and luncheon that was held at Trapezaria in Rockville, Maryland. We enjoyed a delicious meal and exchanged end-of-the-year gifts with each other, as well as, present year-end awards. Everyone had a wonderful time filled with fun, fellowship, and sisterhood.

Helen of Troy Chapter No. 19 Albuquerque, NM

Overall, we have had one successful year and truly feel very blessed as a Chapter. In February and March we hosted a Fellowship Hour after liturgy allowing us to raise money for the American Heart Association and our other charities we support. On Saturday, March 10th we hosted the District #17 Workshop. Our District Project was to collect old reading glasses, prescription glasses and eye glass cases. This was so successful in that we collected 500+ pairs of glasses which were donated to St. Bonaventure. It was a great workshop and we thank all of our Sisters who were able to attend.

On Sunday, March 25th, both AHEPA and Daughters hosted a joint luncheon for our St. George Community for our Greek Independence Day Celebration. Our annual St. George Community Easter Card was a huge success. The card was designed by our Sunday School children who did an amazing job. A big thanks to our Sister Frossene King who completed the graphics. On April 28th, we provided desserts for the St. George Celebration. One of our Community Service Projects for Residents at the AHEPA Housing was to donate yarn, craft items and materials for projects that the residents are working on. Once the projects are completed, they will be donated to the Operation Keep Warm. We were so honored to have our very own Grand President, Eva Jean Fomalont, invited to Capitol Hill to meet with members of Congress to discuss the public policy priorities that impact the community service programs provided by DOP Chapters. We look forward to the Grand President's Testimonial Dinner on May 19th at the Hotel Albuquerque.

Chloris Chapter #40 Celebrates 50th Debutante Ball

In 1967 after several years of research, travel, and discussion, the first Debutante Ball, chaired by Sister, Sophie Usner of Chloris Chapter #40 was held honoring eight Stark County high school senior young women of Greek descent in an effort to raise scholarship funds to be awarded to girls planning to further their formal education. The proceeds of this year’s event, chaired by Sister Georgia Paxos, funded two - $1000 scholarships to selected participants.

Pleiades Chapter No. 50 Hammond, IN

T.G.I.S……THANK GOODNESS, IT’S SPRING! FROM THE HOOSIERS!

In Pleiades Chapter #50, we love to eat, drink and socialize. Our meetings start out with either a pot-luck pre-meeting dinner or we meet at a restaurant for our meetings. Good Food, Drink, and Great Friends…that’s all you need for the recipe of sisterhood.

April 24, 2018-We hosted our annual Senior Citizens Dinner. We cook and serve our seniors to honor them for all they do!

April 29, 2018- Chicago’s Greek Independence Day Parade. Members of our chapter participated on the AHEPA family float as we made our way down the infamous Halsted Street.

May 3, 2018- The Mary Bereolos Scholarship, named after one of our charter members. We fundraise to give out annual scholarships. This year, her granddaughter, Andrea Bereolos Tsakopoulos was our chairperson. The event was hosted at the venue, Recycled Granite. This company employs ONLY people with “Special Needs”. It gives them an opportunity to have jobs while helping the community by using “recycled” granite to create beautiful products. We had a total of 16 participants and raised enough, to once again, give another scholarship to a deserving applicant. As they say, it’s a WIN-WIN Situation!

Antiklea Chapter’s big event of the New Year was the District #3 Mid-Year Workshop, which we hosted with our AHEPA brothers on February 10, 2018. The sisters started the day with a continental breakfast and helped to serve the lunch provided by the brothers. We were pleased to have Grand Vice-President Demi Thomas and Grand Governor Zone 2 Liaison Stella Sirks among our guests. Everyone had an enjoyable and inspirational time, and we all took away new ideas for our chapters to think about.

In line with the Daughters of Penelope objective of preserving and promoting the ideals of Hellenism, we were pleased this year to present the graduating students of St. Constantine & Helen Cathedral’s Greek School with a book, Greek Myths by Olivia Coolidge, a respected writer about mythology for young readers. The books were presented at the March 25 Greek Independence Day celebration.

On Palm Sunday we concluded yet another successful Red Tent for Homeless Women drive to collect sanitary supplies. On the same day, we held a well-received sale of Easter Tsourekia and Koulourakia to benefit our scholarship fund.

Our sisters are now looking forward to a fun end-of-year dinner and a restful summer to recharge our batteries for another year of productive activities.

Charai Chapter No. 79 Salt Lake City, Utah

We need more....? Daughters of Penelope sisters of CHARAI are proud, thrilled, and determined. After a very successful year of accomplishments, retrospection was in order. Questions were asked, inquiries made, proposals suggested—what more could, should we need, or even ought to need? Awareness of the power that CHARAI sisters possess, coupled with their fierce commitment to the DOP Mission Statement, the acknowledgment that all we need more of is the exact same drive, dedication, desire, and dreams we already have was a happy conclusion. CHARAI is looking forward to always supporting the projects, and initiatives that are representative of the Daughters of Penelope. But we are also challenging each sister to proactively reflect on how to incorporate the charges in our Ritual. An effort to use patience kindness, tolerance in our daily interactions will be encouraged. The belief, and respect in truth, goodness, beauty in others will be emphasized. CHARAI is pleased to be perpetuating Alexandra’s true vision, upholding the ideals of Penelope, and the everlasting legacy of the Daughters of Penelope.

Polydama Chapter No. 111 Dayton, Ohio

With deep thanks to Voula Zois for her successful terms as President, Alexis Blessing Brun was elected, and is carrying on the family tradition--her mother Toni Moraites, was a past chapter president. We are thankful for our 60 members! In addition to our monthly meetings, fundraisers included tsoureki sales for Christmas and Easter, our Third Annual Wine Tasting, and Annual Scholarship Luncheon which we've hosted for decades, benefiting the District Buckeye Scholarship Fund. We enjoyed hosting our District visitation in January. Dayton is fortunate to have an active AHEPA. We collaborated in sponsoring a Parish Christmas Gala, luncheon for our Young-At-Heart seniors, and shared joint dinners. Our Educational Committee arranged a tour of the historic city of Springboro, concentrating on its role in the underground slave movement journey to freedom. And for a touch of culture, members visited the Dayton Art Museum to view the Alphonse Mucha exhibit. In February, we attended the AHEPA Midwestern Regional Banquet to support the MOA and SOP and the OSU Modern Greek Studies. Locally, we continue to support our Maids by baking with them for their bake-sale fundraisers. [email protected]

Doris Chapter No. 157 Bloomfield Hills, MI

The long-waited spring finally arrived to raise the spirits of Doris Chapter and began with welcoming in our midst, new Sister Demetra Manolias, a welcome asset to our chapter. Our annual Tsourekia Sale on Palm Sunday was a great success! Led by outstanding chairperson Sister Nitsa Mortis. Our highly successful projects are crucial in helpings us meet our primary goal which is to contribute to our local charitable organizations. Long-standing member, Sister Irene Becharas organized our popular Mother’s Day Bake Sale filled with assortments of tantalizing Greek baked goods. For this project, the Sisters come together to prepare appealing packages wrapped with a bow and a “Baked with love by the Daughters of Penelope” card. It became a social event, as we worked together in an atmosphere of congeniality and support for each other. A huge sellout on Mother’s Day. On Sister Peggy Collias suggestion, multitalented Sister Elizabeth Bisbikis is undertaking the Tri-fold Board project. The board will be filled pictures and accomplishments of our Chapter, and displayed at our events to enhance our public relations, create DOP awareness and promote our Chapter. Alope Chapter No. 158 Albany, NY

Submitted by Chris Pappis

The St. Sophia Greek Orthodox Church in Albany, New York, is the recognized leader of Orthodoxy in upstate New York. The church is also recognized as the pre-eminent fraternal home of the Order of AHEPA and the Daughters of Penelope in the region. They are regarded as the towers of Hellenism in the Albany Community. On Sunday, May 6, the Daughters of Penelope District Lodge, led by Governor Julia Collins and assisted by her extended lodge team visited St. Sophia for a grand installation of the Executive Officers of Alope Chapter #158. Diane Cohen was installed as Chapter President and her team took the oath for the upcoming year. We wanted to share this special moment with all of you. The installation was a proud moment for Alope Chapter #158 and for the District Lodge Executive Officers who attended the ceremony. The enthusiastic participation of everyone made the event a very memorable fraternal event. The ceremony will be remembered by all for years to come. Indeed, the Daughters are a very special, community minded organization, whose contribution to society is beyond impressive. Altes Chapter No. 163 Trenton, NJ

Altes 163 has had an exciting year! In October we hosted our annual gift auction. Proceeds went towards Woman’s Space, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and many other charities. In November we held a dinner honoring our Past President, Maria Brenna, and our 25 years members. In March we attended the Festival of Tables raising money for education. We had a lovely Secret Garden theme. April was a very busy month-we hosted a Mad Hatters Membership Tea where we wore our favorite hats! We have at least 6 candidates for initiation. We also hosted a comedy night where all the proceeds went towards a service dog for veterans suffering from anxiety. This year we also started a fundraiser called the Christmas Jar. It’s based off the book of the same name. We hope to raise enough money to provide food and necessities for a family around Christmas. We also continued our Vasilopita bread fundraiser and our wreath fundraiser around Christmas. For the Lenten season, we started a new fundraiser selling Lenten Cookbooks. We hope to have another productive and charitable year! We look forward to seeing everyone at the District and National Conventions in NJ!

This is a photo from our comedy night where a veteran came and talked about how his service dog played a vital role in helping him cope with PTSD.

A nice group photo featuring our sisters that were able to make it to this years Festival of Tables.

The Karyatides Chapter organized a successful fundraising event at the Grand Bretagne Hotel, with live music and lots of friends. The net proceeds were donated to the Penelopean Day Care. During the event, we honored and awarded certificates of appreciation to:1) brother Athanasios Palos of AHEPA chapter HJ-04, for the creation and kind donation of the video-clip about the Penelopean Day Care, which our Executive Director posted on Facebook and we hope that most of our sisters have seen 2) brother Dr Demetrios Chondros, President of AHEPA chapter HJ-01, for the medical services and assistance that he provides to our members and all the AHEPA family at “Evangelismos” Hospital and for his overall philanthropic work in Greece and 3) sister Helen Tranta, one of the founders of the Karyatides chapter and the Penelopean Day Care, for her 65-year contribution and devotion to the cause of the DOP. At the Day Care, the educational program for the children was enhanced with physics experiments of pre-school level and the children were amazed by their first ‘scientific’ approach of nature. They also created their own botanical garden on the premises, with the help of a gardener. They were so happy with their achievements!

Erato Chapter No. 295

Calgary, Canada On Saturday, February 10th the Calgary Chapters of the Daughters of Penelope and Order of AHEPA held our Alexandra Klironomos Fun Casino – in honor of our dearly departed Sister, Alexandra.

Over 300 people were treated to a night of Black Jack, Roulette, Craps, Poker, and spinning wheels with funny money, silent auctions, 52 card elimination fundraisers, prizes, specialty cocktails and so much more. The show stopper is always the amazing food provided by Strathmore Station – a restaurant operated by Alex’s husband Peter and his associate Lakis – both of whom are also Ahepans. This event is, by far, one of our guest’s favorites and always sells out weeks before the evening.

$20,000 was donated to the Autism Aspergers Friendship Society of Calgary (AAFS) towards providing families in need of financial support with the ability to allow their children to participate in overnight camping trips, filmmaking, therapeutic riding and numerous other activities the AAFS initiates. Families could be deemed “in need” because they don’t qualify for government funding; they receive very little funding or are themselves in personal financial need. Thanks to our guests – our chapters will be helping to bridge that gap.

Harmonia Chapter No. 366 Charlottesville, VA

Submitted by Mary Ann Bournos, Corresponding Secretary, and Catherine Anninos, Treasurer

Our small-in-membership Chapter began the New Year with twenty-one Sisters. Unfortunately, eleven Sisters are not active due to health or work issues, residing in assisted-living facilities, and various personal reasons. The remaining eight long-time Sisters (and two Sisters who were initiated at our January 2018 meeting) are the backbone of our Chapter and because of their efforts Harmonia Chapter #366 continues to remain in existence. In January, we initiated an outreach program, whereby teams of two Sisters visit our homebound Sisters and those residing in assisted-living facilities. Details of visits are reported at Chapter meetings. One Sunday in February was devoted to encouraging parishioners and friends to link their Kroger Bonus Card to Harmonia Chapter #366. Our efforts must have been successful since the number of participating households rose from nine to thirteen in the following quarter. We plan to continue this solicitation from time to time, since it is an easy fundraiser (once the registration process is mastered!). A member of our Board of Governors attended the District Winter Workshop and DOP Mid-Year Conference in Richmond, VA, and presented a report at our March 2018 meeting. In March, four $50 gift cards were sent to Sisters in California who were affected by the devastating fires. A membership roster for Harmonia Chapter #366 that includes name, DOP ID #, address (home and email), telephone (home and cell), and birthday (month and date) was updated and distributed via email; a print copy was given to Sisters who do not have email access. The first day of spring arrived with Charlottesville receiving its first measurable snowfall of 2018.

By April, we were ready to celebrate an actual spring day. Seven Sisters met for lunch at the BBQ Exchange in Gordonsville, VA, on April 11. From there we drove to the Grace Episcopal Church in Keswick, VA, where we attended the Keswick Garden Club Spring Flower Show and Tea. A Social Committee that was assigned the task of coming up with suggestions for social events met at the end of April and will present its report at our May 2018 meeting. Stay tuned for the January 2019 issue of Penelope Scroll where we hope we will be able to

Phillia 380 in northern San Diego California has been very busy. Their latest project was to sell memorial doves that were displayed in the community center with the name of a deceased loved one on it. Then a list of names was compiled to be read at a special memorial service. Secretary Vasil Karounos made the koliva. The memorial service was held April 29 at Sts. They also participated in the District 20 Mid-Winter Conference in San Bernardino California and the six chapter visitation in Redondo Beach California. Eleni Chapter #440 held its initiation ceremony on March 17th 2018. The new Chapter had the exciting opportunity to be initiated by the Grand President Eva Jean Fomalont and the Grand Lodge via Skype. This inspiring ceremony was followed by a formal dinner, along with our AHEPA brothers, where the program of forthcoming events and activities throughout the year 2018 was discussed.

Our initiating members are: Chapter President Eleni Alexandridou, Vice President Charlotte Gardelis, Recording Secretary Maria Dimitriou, Corresponding Secretary Alkistis Manοusopoulou, Treasurer, Katerina Alexaki, Maria D Lykos, Varvara Kyriakou and Eirini Kazinou.

The diverse backgrounds of our dedicated members aim to add value to our chapter, while creating an inclusive environment and strengthening positive

relationships with the local community. Amongst the main goals of our chapter is the support of Greek Schools, Women and Greek athletics.

In March, our first donation of £200 was given to the Saint Sophia's Greek school that keeps up its long-standing educational work in the Greek Community of Great Britain.

According to our agenda, our first charity event will be a “Yoga & Brunch” activity, on June the 2nd, hoping to have a great time for a good cause!
