What an exciting time for the City of Westfield and for Westfield Parks and Recreation! 2014 will bring the opening of Grand Park in the spring, and new sections of trails will be built on both the Monon Trail and the Midland Trace Trail as well as along connector roads. Check out the “Parks & Recreation News” section for more details about the exciting trail projects and more.

We are also looking forward to offering more and more exciting programs and special events for the community. Make sure you check out the “Try Before You Buy” classes offered in January, and as you browse the Grand Guide, keep your eyes peeled for all the programs marked “New.” As we complete our first full year of programming, we are working towards our goal of offering options for people of all ages and with all interests to enjoy. Westfield Parks & Recreation will also be hosting several special events this winter and spring for the whole family, including the annual Easter Egg Hunt with Washington Township Parks & Recreation, the Build-a-Box Birdhouse Building Workshop and of course, the Arbor Day tree planting and giveaway. There is no excuse to not get out of the house and take part in fun activities— push those winter blues away by registering for your favorite class or program today!

I hope to see you and your family in the parks.

Melody Jones, CPRP, CPSI Director, Westfield Parks and Recreation

Picture ManagementThe good news about digital photography is that you can now take hundreds of images without the high cost of film and processing. For some people, this is also the bad news. Now that you have taken all these great images, how do you store, organize and catalog them so you can find them years later. This class will show you ways to sort and organize your images in a way that is meaningful to you. We will explore various software options that are free along with other applications specifically for image management. More class details online.

COMMUNITY COMMITTEEThe primary initiative of the Community Committee is par-ticipation in Plant a Row (PAR) for the Hungry. PAR is rooted in the gardeners’ tradition of sharing bountiful harvest with others. The plan is simple – we ask you to plant an additional row of vegetables, fruits, or herbs in your garden and deliver the harvest to one of our drop-off sites, and the donated produce will be delivered to local food pantries. Through PAR, citizens are able to truly be a part of their community and help those in need. In the last four years, well over two tons of fresh produce has been donated to local food pantries. Much of this produce came from the PAR committee garden. The committee is always looking for active members to help plan, plant, and maintain the gardens, as well as promote the initiative throughout the community. Get involved in this wonderful program by joining the committee or simply by planting an extra row in your own garden!

FLORAL COMMITTEEWIB’s inaugural committee, generously sponsored by Heartland Growers, organizes and participates in beautification projects such as planting the downtown planter boxes, Community Plant Day, the Floral Display Competition and more! A predominant color is selected each year to help provide unity throughout the community. This color is utilized in the hanging baskets and planters downtown, in the garden beds in the parks, and residents are encouraged to feature it in their own gardens. The Floral Committee is pleased to announce that the 2014

color is RED! Start planning your gardens today, and join us for our next meeting to get involved in the 2014 initiatives.

WESTFIELD IN BLOOM: planting pride in our communityWestfield in Bloom (WIB) is a volunteer committee with a mission to instill a greater sense of civic pride and promote beautification through education and community involvement by encouraging the use of flowers, plants, trees, and other environmental and lifestyle enhancements. WIB, in partnership with Westfield Parks & Recreation, is currently made up of four sub-com-mittees, each with its own unique projects and goals: Floral, Heritage, Community, and Environmental Awareness. The committee is always looking for new members, and anyone is welcome to attend the meetings on the first Thursday of every month at 7pm at the Main Street Programming Center, 330 E. Main Street.

Do you have an interest in the history of Westfield? Join the Heritage Committee and get involved in making history come to life! The goal of this group is to combine resources with organizations such as the Westfield Washington Historical Society in an effort to heighten the community’s awareness of Westfield’s heritage. In 2014, the Heritage Committee will be hosting the fourth annual “Voices from the Past” living history walk. “Voices from the Past” is a unique way to learn about Westfield’s history through the lives of former citizens. Attendees are guided on a journey into the past through two historic cemeteries where they hear first person interpretations of some of Westfield’s historic citizens, portrayed by Westfield Playhouse actors. Get involved with planning one of Westfield’s most unique events by joining the Heritage Committee!

HERITAGE COMMITTEE

ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS COMMITTEEThe EAC was formed to help promote an environmentally sustainable community by increasing environmental awareness in Westfield. In 2013, the EAC focused on water conservation education through hosting a series of workshops. Get involved in this great group and be a part of developing the 2014 initiatives! One goal will be continuing the Adopt-a-Prairie program to help maintain the prairie establishment at Freedom Trail Park, and the EAC will be hosting the third annual Build-a-Box Birdhouse Building workshop on March 15th (see page 9 for more details).

Grand Junction Park & Plaza:

Over the course of the last year, there have been nine buildings taken down as the first step in converting two blocks in the Downtown Westfield area into the future site of Grand Junction Park & Plaza. Grand Junction Park & Plaza will include trail connections, water features, an entertainment venue, a play in nature kid’s area and a marketplace location. Jersey Street will also be transformed into our festival boulevard. Most importantly, Grand Junction will give us a sense of place and be the heart of our community as well as a place to rendezvous with friends and family. There will always be something happening in Grand Junction! As land acquisition, site preparation, and planning continues for this exciting new park, please visit our website at www.westfield.in.gov/parks for future updates and additional information.

Monon Trail Updates:

2014 will see the paving completed on what is known as Phase 3 of the Monon Trail, which is the stoned section from

161st Street to Quaker Park. Westfield Parks & Recreation is working on securing a grant to help fund the paving and the addition of amenities to the trail. DLZ Engineering has been contracted to complete the final design of Phase 6 of the Monon from State Road 32 to Monon Elementary School. The land acquisition will take place early in 2014, and construction should start late in the year.

Midland Trace Trail Construction:

There will be several sections of the Midland Trace Trail opening west of Quaker Park in 2014 along with new development. The most significant section is between Springmill and Ditch Roads. Westfield Parks & Recreation is currently planning for the connections between these new and existing sections, so stay tuned for more news as the Midland Trace Trail continues to develop!
