Telecommunication sector in Bangladesh

• The Telecommunications Services is economic sector consists of companies engaged in fixed-line and wireless telecommunication networks for voice, data and high-density data.

• The term telecommunications cover huge variety of technologies that send information over long distances.

• Bangladesh is one of the poorest, most heavily populated countries in the world.

• Telecom is a fast changing dynamic sector.

1998 there are seventeen operators in Bangladesh.• Among these six are most popular operators:

Grameen phone an Introduction

• Grameen phone is the largest and the fastest growing cellular telephone network in Bangladesh.

• It has started operations on March 26, 1997.• Now With more than 50 million subscribers (as

of February 2015), Grameen phone is the largest mobile phone operator .

History and milestone of the Grameen Phone Company:• The idea of providing universal mobile phone access throughout Bangladesh,

including its rural areas, was originally conceived by Iqbal Quadir.

•  He was inspired by the Grameen Bank microcredit model and envisioned a business model where a cell phone can serve as a source of income.

• Quadir traveled back to Bangladesh from US after meeting and successfully raising money from New York-based investor and philanthropist Joshua Mailman, and worked for three years gaining support from various organizations including Nobel Peace Prize laureate Muhammad Yunus of Grameen Bank and the Norwegian telephone company, Telenor.

•  He was finally successful in forming a consortium with Telenor and Grameen Bank to establish Grameenphone. Quadir remained a shareholder of Grameenphone until 2004.

Journey of Grameen PhoneNovember 28th 1996

Grameen Phone was offered a cellular license in Bangladesh by the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications, Government of the People's Republic of Bangladesh.

March 26th 1997 Grameen Phone launched its service on the Independence Day of Bangladesh.

November 5th 2006 After almost 10 years of operation, Grameen Phone has over 10 million subscribers.

September 20th2007 Grameen Phone announces 15 million subscribers.

November 30th 2009 After almost 10 years of operation, Grameen phone has over 10 million subscribers

2012:

Awarded license for 2G operation for 15 years effective from November 2011; two new affordable packages ‘Amontron’ and ‘Nishchinto’ were launched, 10-second pulse was introduced; A GP App was launched to facilitate mobile self service; Reached 40.02 million subscribers.

2013:

• Start WiFi zone based internet service in Banani and Gulshan.• Reached 47.01 million Active subscribers Introducing Smart phones with connection. • Awarded license for 2G operation for 15 years effective from November 2011; two new

affordable packages „Amontron‟ and „Nishchinto‟.

Company overviewOwnership structure:• shareholders of Grameen phone contribute their unique, in-depth

experience in both telecommunications and development.• It is a joint venture between Telenor and Grameen Telecom

Corporation, a non-profit sister concern of the microfinance organization and community Of Grameen Bank.

• Telenor, the largest telecommunications company in Norway, owns a 55.8% share of Grameen phone,

• Grameen Telecom owns 34.2% and the remaining 10% is publicly .

Competitors:• Grameen Phone :Approximately 51.60 million or 5 core 16 lakh subscribers. • Banglalink:Banglalink Digital Communication Limited; previously known as Orascom Telecom

Bangladesh Limited. In 2005 Orascom Telecom Holding acquired Sheba Telecom and gave a new trading name Banglalink. By 2015 itr holds approximately 31.50 million subscribers.

• Robi:Robi is a dynamic and leading countrywide GSM communication solution provider. It

is a joint venture company between Axiata Group . Axiata (Bangladesh) Limited, formerly known as Telekom Malaysia International (Bangladesh), strateded its operation in 1997 under the brand name Aktel service provider in Bangladesh in early 2008, Later, on 28th March, 2010 the company started its new journey with the brand name Robi. Now Approximately 26.40 million subscribers in robi.

• Airtel:

Airtel Bangladesh is the sixth mobile phone carrier to enter the Bangladesh market, and launched commercial operations on May 10, 2007. Approximately 7.90 million subscribers are used it now.

• Teletalk Bangladesh Ltd. (TeleTalk):

TeleTalk is a state-owned mobile phone company in Bangladesh. TeleTalk started operating on 29 December, 2004. It is a Public Limited Company of Bangladesh Government, the state-owned telephone operator. Teletalk is the first mobile operator who serve 3rd generation network service in Bangladesh. Approximately 3.92 million subscriber used it.

• Citycell:

Citycell (Pacific Bangladesh Telecom Limited) is the first mobile communications company of Bangladesh. It is the only CDMA network operator in the country .Approximately 1.26 million or 12 lakh 60 thousand subscribers use it.

• It have around 14 buildings in Gulshan area which was the previous headquarter of GrameenPhone office. Headquarters are located in Dhaka.

• Its the largest of six mobile operators in the country.

From our project survey it is found that 25% of the respondents strongly agreed , 30% respondent agreed, 20% respondent neutral ,20% disagreed and 5% of the respondent strongly disagreed that they will recommend other people to use it.

FindingsWe have distributed 20 questionnaire to the respondent for the project of

Grameen phone and we have find out the following things:

• Grameen phone is the largest mobile phone operator in the country. • Majority of the people are started to use Mobile phone after SSC.

• Majority of the respondent use Grameen phone as their first choice.

• All most all of the respondents are using prepaid packages.
