Grade 4 Unit 6 Exploring Measurement Mathematics

LONG BEACH UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT 1 Posted 6/14/16 New 2016 – 2017

Unit Goals – Stage 1 Number of Days: 33 Traditional: May 1 – June 15, 2017; Track B: June 9 – July 26, 2017 Unit Description: Unit 6 ends the year with an exploratory unit on measurement. Students build a conceptual understanding of the relative sizes of units of measure within a single system of measurement. They investigate measurement through the formulas for area and perimeter. Data is used to support students’ understanding of fractional measurement quantities both smaller and larger than 1. Students combine competencies from different domains to provide a context for problem solving. Materials: 1-inch grid paper, color pencils, rulers (centimeter and 12 inch), meter stick and yard stick, tape measures, analog clocks, balance scale with mass weights, beaker (marked for mL and L), digital scale (metric and customary units), and containers (gallon, quart, pint, and cup) and Go Math! MathBoard or whiteboard (Some of these are not provided, but suggested and can be checked out at the TRC Math & Science Resource Center) Standards for Mathematical Practice SMP.1 Make sense of problems and

persevere in solving them. SMP.2 Reason abstractly and quantitatively. SMP.3 Construct viable arguments and

critique the reasoning of others. SMP.4 Model with mathematics. SMP.5 Use appropriate tools strategically. SMP.6 Attend to precision. SMP.7 Look for and make use of structure. SMP.8 Look for and express regularity in

repeated reasoning. Standards for Mathematical Content Clusters Addressed Measurement and Data 4.MD.A Solve problems involving

measurement and conversion of measurements from a larger unit to a smaller unit.

4.MD.B Represent and interpret data.

Transfer Goals Students will be able to independently use their learning to… • Make sense of never-before-seen problems and persevere in solving them. • Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.

standard system related? • How can you find the perimeter and area of a

rectangle?

Acquisition KNOWLEDGE (K) Students will know… • The definitions of the academic vocabulary

words such as capacity, convert, customary units, line plot metric units, and mixed measures (e.g. 3 m 43 cm), and square inch..

• The relative sizes of measurement units within a single system of measurement including yard (yd.), foot (ft.), inch (in), pound (lb.), ounce (oz.), gallon (gal), quart (qt.), pint (pt.), cup (c), kilometer (km), meter (m), centimeter (cm), kilogram (kg), gram (g), liter(L), milliliter(mL); hour (hr.), minute (min), and second (sec).

• The formulas for finding perimeter and area of rectangles.

SKILLS Students will be skilled at and/or be able to… • Convert measurements from larger to smaller

units. • Record equivalent measurements in a two-

column table. • Use the four operations to solve measurement

word problems, including problems involving simple fractions and decimals.

• Represent measurement quantities using diagrams such as number lines that feature a measurement scale.

Standards for Mathematical Content

Measurement and Data [s] 4.MD.A Solve problems involving measurement and conversion of measurements from a larger unit to a smaller unit.

4.MD.1 Know relative sizes of measurement units within one system of units including km, m, cm; kg, g; lb, oz.; l, ml; hr, min, sec. Within a single system of measurement, express measurements in a larger unit in terms of a smaller unit. Record measurement equivalents in a two-column table. For example, know that 1 ft is 12 times as long as 1 in. Express the length of a 4 ft snake as 48 in. Generate a conversion table for feet and inches listing the number pairs (1, 12), (2, 24), (3, 36)…

4.MD.2 Use the four operations to solve word problems involving distances, intervals of time, liquid volumes, masses of objects, and money,

including problems involving simple fractions decimals, and problems that require expressing measurements given in a larger unit in terms of a smaller unit. Represent measurement quantities using diagrams such as number line diagrams that feature a measurement scale.

4.MD.3 Apply the area and perimeter formulas for rectangles in real world and mathematical problems. For example, find the width of a

rectangular room given the area of the flooring and the length, by viewing the area formula as a multiplication equation with an unknown factor.

[s] 4.MD.B Represent and interpret data.

4.MD.4 Make a line plot to display a data set of measurements in fractions of a unit (1/2, 1/4, 1/8). Solve problems involving addition and subtraction of fractions by using information presented in line plots. For example, from a line plot find and interpret the difference in length between the longest and shortest specimens in an insect collection.

Key: [m]= major clusters; [s] = supporting clusters; [a] = additional clusters

Evidence of Learning – Stage 2 Assessment Evidence

Unit Assessment Students will complete selected response and constructed response items to indicate level of mastery/understanding of the unit standards as outlined in this guide. Measurement and Data [s] 4.MD.A

• The student converts measurements from larger units to smaller units within a single system of units. • The student records measurement equivalents in a two-column table. • The student identifies measurement quantities from diagrams, such as number line diagrams that feature a measurement scale, and uses the

information to solve word problems. • The student applies the area and perimeter formulas for rectangles to solve mathematical and real-world problems.

[s] 4.MD.B

• The student completes a line plot to display a data set of measurements in fractions of a unit (1/2, 1/4, 1/8). • The student solves problems involving addition and subtraction of fractions with like denominators by using information presented in line plots.

For selected content, students will need to…

• Solve complex problems in pure and applied mathematics, making productive use of knowledge and problem solving strategies. • Clearly and precisely construct viable arguments to support their own reasoning and critique the reasoning of others.

However, the California Mathematics Framework uses A = l x w. For coherence, if you choose to use A = b x h, teach that l x w = b x h and that these can be used interchangeably.
