GENERAL DIRECTIONS

You will write a narrative piece that has a beginning, middle and end.

This is your student writing packet. Carefully read the prompt below and then plan and write your rough draft on your own paper. Your final draft will be written ONLY on the composition paper (at the end of this packet). When you are finished writing, revising, and editing, check your work one last time before writing your final copy. PROOFREAD your final copy.

EXERCISE 1: Read and analyze the TOPIC, PROMPT, and THINK ABOUT sections.

TOPIC: Everyone has something special to celebrate. A special event can be something you do with your family like a holiday or vacation, or it can be experienced with people you do not know like the first day of school.

PROMPT: Write a narrative to describe to your class your favorite special event and the way it took place.

THINK ABOUT:

As you see pictures of special events as part of this test, think about the prompt and prepare to choose an event to write about.

Try to remember special gatherings or events with your family such as birthday parties or holidays.

Do you belong to Brownies, Cub Scouts or any similar organization where you have experienced a special event?

“The First Day of May”

On the first day of May, Henry woke up early and said to his big dog Mudge, “I’m

having a birthday today.” Mudge wagged his tail, rolled over, and snored.

“Mudge,” said Henry, “wake up. I’m having a birthday today.” Mudge wagged his tail,

rolled to the other side, and snored some more.

“Mudge,” said Henry, “birthday cake.” Mudge opened one eye.

“Ice cream,” said Henry. Mudge opened the other eye.

“And lots and lots of crackers,” said Henry. Mudge jumped up. He shook Henry’s hand.

Henry was having a birthday, and Mudge would be having crackers. The first day of May

looked pretty good.

Text Based Questions about the story for students to answer:1. What is today’s event?

2. What is Mudge excited for?

3. Why does the author say, “The first day of May looked pretty good?”
