GENERAL DIRECTIONS

You will write an expository piece that has a beginning, middle and end for Language Arts and Social Studies.

This is your student test packet. Carefully read the prompt below and then plan and write your rough draft on your own paper. Your final draft will be written ONLY on the composition paper (at the end of this packet). When you are finished writing, revising, and editing, check your work one last time before writing your final copy. PROOFREAD your final copy.

EXERCISE 1: Read and analyze the TOPIC, PROMPT, and THINK ABOUT sections.

TOPIC: You are planning a trip to Flagstaff, Arizona. You would like to have a pleasant trip and learn something, too. There are three routes you could choose to take that would all end up in Flagstaff. To make your trip easier, you have a safe car, enough money for gas and enough time so that you can choose any way to get to Flagstaff along a major Arizona road. Provide directions of how you will arrive and what landmarks you will see.

PROMPT: Choose one of the routes provided. Give directions for how to travel from Phoenix to Flagstaff. Include what cities you need to travel through and what landmarks you will see.

THINK ABOUT:

Sine you have plenty of time, do you want to spend more time in the car or get there more quickly?

What Landmarks in Arizona have you visited? What Landmarks would you like to visit?

What cities in Arizona have you visited? Do you have family in other Arizona cities? What city would you like to visit?

Strategies for Success

● Preview questions to set the purpose for reading the text.

● Underline/highlight direction words and specific topic words in the question. It is important that you fully understand the question to which you are responding.

● With every primary or secondary source document, realize that you need to analyze and identify the importance of that document in order to respond to the questions thoroughly.

● When reading a document, use reading strategies to help you understand. You should:

○ slow down○ write notes○ highlight○ reread○ pose questions○ visualize○ look for patterns○ use text features○ summarize

● Remember that the DBQ/Writing Benchmark is intended to be a collaborative and thoughtful learning activity. You should be actively engaged in speaking, listening, and writing within your group.

Things to do in Sedona:

People often ask, "Is there no end to Sedona's attractions?" It's true: There are many things to see and many things to do in Sedona. Visitors and residents delight in the area's natural year-round beauty, which is conducive to many types of outdoor activities. It's easy to spend several weeks in Sedona exploring hidden canyons and enjoying red rock trails of the outdoors. Sedona is an outdoor wonderland for nature lovers! With its mild four-season climate, bright clear skies (and starlit nights), more than 100 trails for hiking and biking; world-class golf and tennis; land tours; and aerial adventures in planes, helicopters and balloons, it's easy to see why nature enthusiasts return to Sedona again and again.

Imagine floating through the air in a hot air balloon, drifting at the whim of the early-morning breezes. There's not a sound to be heard, only the vast expanse of the desert beneath. At four to five miles per hour, it's slow enough to get a good look at the landscape with its javelina, jackrabbits, bobcats, antelope, mule deer and other wildlife.

Then there's hitting the rubber on single-track trails, mountain biking at high speeds through rolling terrain, arroyos, winding creeks and massive rock formations. Or coasting along in a jeep, a Hummer or an ATV - or perhaps on horseback or foot, taking a deep breath of pleasure as you admire Sedona's crimson cliffs and towering buttes. Don’t forget the nearby Oak Creek Slide Rock. Source: http://www.visitsedona.com/

Text Based Questions about the story for students to answer:1. Based on your map, which route is Sedona on?

The Grand Canyon Caverns and Tours

Grand Canyon Caverns is a natural limestone cavern 210 feet underground and the largest dry cavern in the U.S. (See “History” link also). You enter and leave the caverns by means of an elevator. We offer 45 minute, 3/4 mile guided walking tours. Tours depart every half hour daily except Christmas Day, the only day the Caverns are closed.

Winter Tour Hours: Monday – Sunday 10:00 am 4:00 pm

Our Great Regular Tour: Adults: $16.95 each Children:$12.95 (5 to 12)

Our Short Tour:

Our guided, 25-minute “short tour” is specifically designed for our guests who are short on time or who may not be physically able to participate in the entire walking tour (wheel chair accessible). The tour begins with an elevator ride down 21 stories (210 feet) to the Chapel of the Ages cavern, the scene of numerous weddings throughout the years and large enough to hold two football fields. Your guide will tell you about the history of these awesome Caverns, including information regarding areas you will not visit. You will view Selenite and limestone crystals, our unique “winter crystals,” and Helecite crystals (a very rare form of Selenite). See the “teacup handles,” red-wall limestone, crystals and more.
