TOURIST INFORMATION CENTERS AND ASSISTANTSIn central Seoul, you’ll find multiple Tourist Information Centers as well as tourist assistants — easily recognized by their red uniforms bearing an “I” — moving throughout the city. They can all provide information about accommodations, restaurants, tourist attractions, shopping areas, transportation, and lost and found, in Korean, English, Japanese, and Chinese.

USEFUL TIPSSmoking AreasYou are not allowed to smoke on the street in Korea. Instead, find a designated smoking area or booth. If you are found smoking or dropping cigarettes on the street, you may be fined up to 50,000 won (around US$45).

No-Tip CultureRestaurants include a gratuity in your bill. You don’t need to leave an additional tip.

Convenience StoresMost convenience stores are open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Among other items, they typically sell over-the-counter medications and T-money, and have ATMs.

BLUE BUSES travel on major roads and run for relatively long distances through Seoul.GREEN BUSES travel shorter distances between transfer points.RED BUSES travel express routes from Seoul to suburban areas.

SUBWAY

Subway is the preferred form of public transportation here. Each subway station has a name, number, and a color representing the subway line. Find a detailed subway map at www.seoulmetro.co.kr/station/eng/linemap.action. When you arrive at a subway station, you may purchase a single-trip card or use T-money for the fare.

Buy a single-trip ticket at ticket vending machines, which offer four language options (Korean, English, Japanese, and Chinese). The ticket price that is displayed includes a 500 won deposit, which can be refunded at a vending machine after you complete your trip. T-money, which is a rechargeable smart card used to pay fares on buses, subway lines, and taxis, can be purchased at convenience stores bearing the T-money logo (GS 25, CU, 7-Eleven, Mini Stop, With Me, Buy The Way, Story Way).

TAXIS

In Seoul, taxis are widely available. You can find them at taxi stands or by simply standing at a main road and waving. Taxi fares, which are calculated by distance and time, can be paid with cash, credit cards, or T-money.

HOW TO USE T-MONEYWhen you get on a bus or enter a subway station, simply tap your T-money card on the payment sensor, and then repeat the action when you get off the bus or leave the subway. Note: If you don’t tap your card when you exit, you will be charged double the base fare the next time you use public transportation. And if you tap the card and then transfer to a different bus or subway, the fare will be discounted.
