Cathedral of Notre Dame. Chartres, France. ca. 1145-1220

• Notre Dame means “Our Lady” and refers to the Virgin Mary in Christianity.

• The Chartres Cathedral holds what was believed by many Christians to be the Virgin Mary’s tunic (a piece of clothing). This tunic is considered to be a sacred relic, and attracted many Christians to this cathedral.

Cathedral of Notre Dame. Chartres, France. ca. 1145-1220

• The Chartres Cathedral began construction in 1145. Fifty years later, a fire destroyed all but the eastern crypt and west façade.

• The western façade contains a rose window and two spires. The two spires look very different from each other, because they were built during different time periods.
