Part 3 Digital

Libraries

Page 2: Got tech (Digital Libraries)

This may not be the best way to remember all those good sites

Page 3: Got tech (Digital Libraries)

But we all want a way to organize all of the great

websites we have

Page 4: Got tech (Digital Libraries)

This is the third installment of a series called Got Tech ?

In this session, we will investigate ways of

managing our digital libraries

#2. RSS

Page 6: Got tech (Digital Libraries)

First, let’s look take a closer look at RSS

Page 7: Got tech (Digital Libraries)

RSS solves a problem for people who regularly use the web. It allows you to easily

stay informed by retrieving the latest content from the sites you are interested in.

Page 8: Got tech (Digital Libraries)

You save time by not needing to visit each site individually. You ensure your privacy, by not

needing to join each site's email newsletter. The number of sites

offering RSS feeds is growing rapidly.

Page 9: Got tech (Digital Libraries)

RSS, originally known as Real Simple Syndication, and sometimes

referred to as Rich Site Summary, is a format for delivering regularly

changing web content. Many news-related sites, weblogs

and other online publishers syndicate their content as an RSS Feed to

whoever wants it.

Page 10: Got tech (Digital Libraries)

How do you use RSS?

It is pretty simple!

Page 11: Got tech (Digital Libraries)

Online software like Google Reader or Bloglinesgrab RSS feeds from various

sites and display them for you

Page 12: Got tech (Digital Libraries)

So, instead of visiting all of your favourite blogs or

news-sites individually, you can see

this each day…

Page 15: Got tech (Digital Libraries)

This person has received new feeds from a few of the sites they

follow

Page 16: Got tech (Digital Libraries)

More importantly, they will notice that there is nothing new from several

others

Page 17: Got tech (Digital Libraries)

So, spend your time reading and exploring

new information instead of checking to see if there

is anything new.

There are also several ways of cataloguing all of your

favourite sites and finding them when you need

them

Page 20: Got tech (Digital Libraries)

Every site you visit has a few keywords associated with them. In the virtual world, these are called

‘tags’

Page 21: Got tech (Digital Libraries)

Social bookmarking sites allow you to keep a list of all of the sites you

like and organizes them using these tags
