Be Your Child’s Best Friend

As I look at this current generation of parent child relationship, it is very obvious to anyone looking that there is a “great divide. The supposed essentials of everything from personal television sets to the latest smartphone has placed the parental reach in a very grave and dangerous position.

To make up for that many parents opt to exist in a buddy system, willing to be used when the child needs them in exchanges for the child’s temporary liking of them.

Then there is the opposing dilemma of the authoritarian and subservient student. Where the relationship is beaten with stern correction and constant

reminders of the positional rights or the lack of.

As a child I can remember my mother saying to me often, “I’m your best friend, because I’m the one who is going to tell you the truth, love you when you do wrong...” She also encouraged us to share our dreams. And with my sister, I believed she learned even more how to forgo the slight authoritarian position she had with me.

This statement from her stating the fact that she was our best friend helped to develop in us (1) the understanding of the character of a true friend (2) the trust that she had our best interest at heart (3) the

awareness that she was not perfect but desired to teach us the best she knew how and (4) the permission to be who God created us to be.

I can even remember times when my mother would come and apologize for speaking harshly to me, or for making a wrong judgement call. As I look back, I realize those are qualities of a true friend.

Parents, I say this as a child, if you want your words to become actions of joy and not of conflict - learn to be your child’s best friend, and not their buddy or authoritarian master.

As a friend they will trust and receive what you teach them. And even in their youth they will feel blessed to have you in their life. Friends can learn so much from each other. So give it a try.

I N O T H E R W O R D S

I know last month I wrote about the coming of fall. And I am so excited that it comes this month. There is even a big celebration here in Texas that will mark this grand occasion - all smiles - The Texas State Fair.

Last year I attended what I thought was the biggest fair in the nation (I learned Texas is) in St. Paul, Minnesota. I don’t think I have ever been to a State Fair, at least not since I was old enough to know.

I was a kid, taking in all the sites, sounds, food and rides. A few hours into the fun, I became horrible sick...I learned at a certain age food and certain rides don’t mix. Soon nature remedy that and I was back to enjoying the fun, minus the rides.

What I enjoyed most was the fellowship with a few of the members from the church there. Yes, I could have had a nice time at the fair alone or with one other person. But fellowship made it more exciting!

This past month we have spent over 6 weeks of fellowship with other members in our small groups. As we marked entrance to a “new season” we held our own little small fairs with a time of fellowship together. Now let’s not let it be a nice memory but let’s continue to make fellowship and evangelism a part of continual life. While the State Fair will end after a few weeks, ours can continue on.

I find this time of the year is a great time to fellowship. With so many festivals coming in the fall and winter months, I enjoy mixing fellowship and festivals together. Together they just seem to bring out the fun. Let’s make fellowship this year’s festival.

Rest By Bishop Brenda K. Perry

Jesus said, “Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle

and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” Matthew 11:28-29 (NKJV)

Every year I try my best to take a month off in the summer and pursue rest for my body, soul and spirit, I call it “my sabbatical”. I know many pastors question my length of time away from the Church, or may I say pulpit. Yes, it’s a very dangerous time to be gone from the body of believer. Attendance and finances are important in the summer months. Every Church suffers lack in the summer months, so why would I leave during this time. Well there is no greater time to exercise my faith, and believe God will supply all the Church’s need according to His riches in glory. I had to make up in my mind that the people God entrusted me with is His Body, His Bride and not mine. He paid the price.

I believe what Apostle Paul said it is better for me to be present with the body here on earth, than to be with the Lord for this hour. So for one to be effective naturally and spiritual one must take time out for themselves. No, you may not need a whole month, or you may divide your month into weeks throughout the year. Every person needs a physical rest to get away from your everyday pace.

To the fivefold ministry that labor is this glorious Gospel, you must take time out and refresh yourself. Yes, I know it is very hard, but you can do it. Don’t fool yourself and think that the people can’t do without you, they can. And if you find yourself in the grave, they surely can. Jesus, Himself, pulled his disciple away and rested. People ask me is my

sabbatical prayer and fasting, or doing nothing or what. However you attain rest, just do it. Whatever causes you to gain some tranquility in your life, just do it. As for me, it is a mixture of all. I’m not talking about leaving God out of the picture. That is foolishness. I’m a lover of the body of Christ, so when Sunday comes I’m in the house of worship, if I’m near one.

The Miracle and Power of TransformationBy Minister Isaac Bazile

II Corinthians 3:18 --“But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord.”Matt 17:2. (KJV) – “And was transfigured before them: and his face did shine as the sun, and his raiment was white as the light.”

Mark 9:2. (KJV) – “And after six days Jesus taketh with him Peter, and James, and John, and leadeth them up into an high mountain apart by themselves: and he was transfigured before them.”

Rom 12:2. (KJV) – “And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.”

The word of God has used the word transformed several times in describing a change or metamorphosis from one thing to something totally different from how it began. A caterpillar is an ugly creature even scary when we look at it in its original state. But once it goes

Rest from page 2

What I want to receive from my “sabbatical” is to quiet my soul down, whether it is sleeping in a few days, playing some game on the computer, watching television, an activity outside, whatever takes me away from the constant driving force of doing. My spirit person loves God with everything within me, but my soul can cause distraction because is over worked and tired. Yes, nothing is greater than my “sabbatical”, to have a few days closure with the Lord to bring the soul back in harmony with the spirit person. Remember everything is housed in the soul, your emotions, will, thinking, feeling, intellect, and the list goes on. Our spirit does not get weary, but our soul does. For it to continue in the race, give your soul some rest.

Rest is needed in about everything, whether material, or people or things. God commanded Israel to allow the land to rest after seven years of giving out. Our soul is just like the soil. For it to be effective and productive, we need rest.

Transformation from page 1

into its cocoon state it begins to change and when the change is complete, the once ugly caterpillar has become a beautiful butterfly. Life is a process of transformation. For good or bad. You have been changing since the day you were born!

Word: "Metamorphosis"metamorphoo (met-am-or-fo'-o); to transform (literally or figuratively, "metamorphose") KJV-- change, transfigure, transform.

As a caterpillar into a butterfly.

This word describes the process that God is doing in our lives. I believe it is His will that we be transformed in order for us to do His will. We must understand that spiritually, transformation takes time. It is no less a miracle whether it takes 1 second or 100 years. Time

is not as important with God as the end results. The miracle is still the same! Time – quick or lengthy.

• Be transformed on the Mount with Peter James and John• Water into wine!• Create the World in 7 Days• Transform a Jacob (the grabber and the one that wrestled with God) into the Son of God called Israel.

The only difference is the time of the process and material! The choice to be transformed is yours. You eat and exercise and your physical body will grow. You study and observe and your mind will grow. You chose to relate to others and

your emotions will grow. You chose to relate to God and your spirit will grow. The points being you make choices for this transformation to take place in your life.

II.The human will is the main difference between the transformation in matter and the transformation in humans. Are you happy where you are today?Have you resigned yourself to the hopelessness of your situation?Do you feel that you can't be any better?Have you given up?Are you stuck in a rut?Have you quit growing as a person?Have you quit growing as a Christian?

III.Today I want to talk to you about the power of God that is available to you to lift you out of that pit of despair and lethargy and transform your future. That is what the Gospel is all about!Good News, Hope! God hasn't quit on you!

Our journey in faith study brings us to Hebrews 11, God's Hall of Faith. Now chances are great that I am talking to some people that are fighting a ghost from the past. For you .. it may be that you've committed some tragic sin that nobody ever found out about. Your ghost may be a mental or emotional breakdown that you had that nobody knows about.

“Running”

We love to quote this scripture: “Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset [us], and let us run with patience the race that is set before us.” (Hebrews 12:1)

When runners aren't running, they are talking about running, planning their next run, shopping for running. Runners telling their stories to other runners about running — how it has changed their lives, and their spirits. Can this really be true? If so, why do our actions as Christians speak so loud and our body language says something so different from what we quote from the word of God? Lord, help us to speak the truth so we can be set free.

While running this race, we will encounter stumbling blocks which will try to keep us from finishing this race as a Christian. Remember that we must make it to the finish line. Another thing about a true runner is that nothing short of a broken leg can keep them from running. They run in the heat, in the cold, in rain or snow, even when they don’t feel their best they still want to run.

In this Christian race, we have an advantage. We gain strength and power from the Holy Spirit that will push us to

overcome barriers and achieve breakthroughs. We will reach new goal as we continue our own personal relationship with Jesus Christ.

Let what you say be what you do. God will help you run this race with patience, if we ask him. Even better yet, seek His face and lay aside every weight and sin that distracts you. Don’t allow the stumbling blocks to detour your way; ask God for understanding, not giving up. Take a second wind and keep running. Slow down to a steady pace so you won’t get tired in doing well while running the race. Keep allowing the Lord to renew you every day.

Isa 40:31, “but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.” This is one of my favorite scriptures.

So Runners, to your mark!

Once more I say peace and blessings in Jesus Name!

Are you dead yet?Matthew 16, verses 24 through 25,

“Then said Jesus to His disciples, If any man will come after Me, let him deny

himself and take up his cross and follow Me.  For whosoever will save his life shall lose it, and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it.”

Based on my belief in scripture, Christianity today is not what our Lord intended, by no means. Much of contemporary Christianity and church life is bent on selfcentered, selfcircumferenced consumption.  There are many people who wish to identify themselves with Jesus Christ, but on their terms. They wish to call themselves Christians and their whole perspective toward it is that they are in it for what they can gain. They are in it to be identified with one of the big name mega churches. They are in it expecting Jesus to jump at their every petition.

To come to Jesus Christ, yes, is to receive and keep on receiving forever and ever.  But there's pain before the gain, and there is a cross before the crown, and there is suffering before the glory.  And there is sacrifice before the reward.  I believe that's what our Lord is teaching us in this critical passage.

Truth is we are called to win by losing.  That's the heart of discipleship.  We are called to give up before we gain.  It isn't as if Jesus had just said this for the first time.  Look back in chapter 10, verse 37. But it isn't only Matthew that records this principle.  Mark does as well in chapter 10 and verse 21. In Luke we find the same thing repeated in chapter 14, verse 25. And John wouldn't be left out either in this crucial lesson.  And so we hear our Lord

Greetings from Baylor University in Waco, Texas. I just wanted to do a brief introduction to what has been taking place so far. I have come into interaction with some awesome people on this campus. I have to say that this is, undeniably, one beautiful campus. I miss you guys this August 22nd, the first Sunday I have not been at New Life Temple Church at my post in the sound booth. I did, however, go to a church called Antioch Baptist Church that Sunday, and it put me in mind of home in quite a few ways. I will be going again this current Sunday for Sunday School. As I am typing, I have currently completed three classes, and I have one more remaining later in the afternoon. Did I mention that this campus is insanely BIG!?!?! But after walking back and forth from place to place, I am really getting my barrings together, which is helpful. The staff, students, teachers, professors, etc. are all just wonderful people. I thank God for the opportunity to be here. The weather consist of clear blue skies with not a cloud in site, but so much heat. It is not dry and humid in the air as it is in Houston thankfully. I am so excited to have finally started the first day of college and I want to personally thank my entire church family for all of the prayers, and gifts, and words of encouragement and hugs. I love you guys so much, and I'll try my best to keep on sending articles to you guys from good Ole Waco, Texas

Seconds have been denied because of...

My mother taught me to do it,

but often fails to do it herself....I’m so in

trouble!

My BFF knows it drives me up the wall, and my constant reminder of it drives up the other wall!

I just don’t understand why people refuse to do it. It requires little effort, yet people continue to dismiss it.

My pressure rises, the veins pop out of my neck, and I just wish everyone would stop ignoring it! For crying out loud! And don’t wait until the last minute to do it either you....!

I must calm down! My head is already starting to spin and I’m only thinking about it.

I so hope those of you reading this are not vile criminals like those mentioned above.

Ok, so I guess you’re trying to figure out what could be so bad as to make me go through that whole tirade. Well, believe me it is a horrible, horrible thing.

I can’t stand when drivers refuse to use their signal to get over.

I promise that cooks my blood beyond the boiling point. Even worse, those who use it at the last minute, or as they are getting over.

I mean what driver’s manuel did they read?

I’ve gone out with guys and sworn I would never date him because he refused to use his signal.

Oh, don’t act like that’s strange! LOL!

That easy to use switch is placed in the most convenient place for the safety of you and others, and to show a thing called COURTESY!

Yes, it’s true. This is a major pet peeve of mine. I don’t know why, but it just seems to bug the jiggers out of me when people don’t use their blinker switch.

And those people who love leaving it on...now that’s a whole other story.

But I find that something so easy seems like a hard task for many people. If not for the other people driving, just do it for me. Yea, right - like you care.

How many times do we say we are Christians, but there’s no “indicator light” to show people. We claim to be going right, but in fact we go left of everything that we know God’s Word tells us.

Our friends are confused by the inconsistent changes we make in our life. One moment we come across as a Christian, but without warning we began to act out as the world, all the while smiling like it’s ok.

There are those who have coined a phrase, “Nobody can judge me but God”, to defend their behavior. It’s like when I ask people why didn’t they use their signal? “Oh, no one was behind me...the other car is way back there.”

Guess what? It’s still wrong.

There is nothing worst than seeing a person destroy or weaken the credibility of Christians by using the label, but denying responsibility to live like one.

That individual becomes a danger to themselves and those who are around them. So let’s make sure our indicator light is on lest we cause a major wreck and cause others to be hurt by our decision.

say in John 12, “Verily, verily I say unto you, except a grain of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone.  But if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit.  He that loveth his life shall lose it and he that hateth his life in this world shall keep it unto life eternal."

You see, this was one of Jesus' recurring themes.  There are some things that our Lord especially taught, some specially loved truths which He went back to again and again and again.  We will never understand discipleship unless we understand this principle. The principle is winning by losing.

He had talked about the sacrifice of discipleship.  He had talked about the cost of discipleship.  He had talked about the pain involved, the severed relationships, the hostility, the reproach, the rejection, the willingness to suffer.  And here He reiterates it, this time to His disciples.  Why, if He's taught them before?  Because it is clear to Him at this juncture that they have somehow missed the lesson.  It's one thing to teach a lesson, it's something else to have it learned.

I disown myself completely.  That's the first essential in the Christian life.  That's the way you come to Christ and that's the way we live.  He is saying those who come into My Kingdom aren't those who think they're somebody, but those who know they're nobody and have no resource.  Until you know how damned we are, we'll never appreciate how precious His forgiveness is. Until we know how utterly poor we are, we can't ever know how great His riches are.  The whole law of God in the Old Testament is to show men how unsavable they are on their own terms, how irreconcilable they are to God, how unredeemable.  The proud sinner wants Christ and his pleasure, Christ and his covetousness, Christ and his immorality, but you don't get Him on those terms.

What does it mean to live a life of selfdenial, dying to self?  What does that really mean?  Have you ever thought

about that?  Think of it this way.  When your good is evil spoken of, when your wishes are crossed and your advice is disregarded, and your opinions are ridiculed, and you refuse to let anger rise in your heart or even defend yourself, you take it all patiently in loving silence, you're dying to self.

When you lovingly and patiently bear any disgrace, any annoyance, you can stand face to face with folly and extravagance and spiritual insensitivity, and endure it as Jesus did, that is dying to self.  When you are content with any food, any money, any clothing, any climate, any society, any solitude, any interruption by the will of God, that is dying to self.  When you never care to refer to yourself in conversation or record your own good works, or itch after commendation from others, and when you truly love to be unknown by anyone, that is dying to self.  When you see your brother prosper and have his needs wondrously met, and can honestly rejoice with him in spirit and feel no envy and never question God, though your needs are greater and still unmet, that is dying to self.  When you can receive correction, and reproof from one of less stature than yourself, and humbly admit inwardly as well as outwardly that he's right, and find no resentment and no rebellion in your heart, that is dying to self.

My question to you is, “Are you dead yet?”

That’s God’s truth this month from

ASCRIBING VALUES

What’s it worth to you?

What do you value about your mate? What are the qualities you most appreciate?

You know it’s easy to become so common with your spouse that you take them and their contribution to your life for granted. It’s often easier to complain than to compliment; to

criticize than to appreciate. To focus on the things they lack rather than the many good qualities that make them special. Many of us are reluctant to put in the work necessary to build a strong and stable relationship; one that will go the distance.

One way to ensure longevity in your marriage relationship is to VALUE it! Don’t just have the attitude that I love him or her and that’s enough. Do your best to add to your marriage. Grow together; learn something new about your spouse; study them.

The scripture tells us to dwell together according to knowledge and that we are heirs together of the gracious gift of life. 1 Peter 3:7

This will require spending time together, talking about things that are important. No not the bills or the children, although we must talk about these things. Remember to explore what’s important to them as an individual. Perhaps it’s a dream they have forgotten, desires they haven’t realized yet. Talk the way you did when you were dating and wanted to know more about what made this person uniquely them. Take a real interest in each other.

Often we let the everyday cares of maintaining a home, work, dealing with the children and many other necessary things cause us to grow apart. Don’t allow “life” to cause you to go through the motions without really “living”!

It’s important to do things you like to do together. Make sure your spouse knows and feels they are the most important person in your life. Value the gift of love given to you in the person of your spouse.

Do things to add to the quality of your relationship. Pray together, it builds intimacy.

As we are humbled and vulnerable in our relationship with God and one another we strengthen our foundation. A threefold cord is not easily broken.

It is important to worship together to discuss and study God’s word together.

You don’t have to be super spiritual or pious to do this.

Take a walk together, retreat and go on vacation together. It’s important to get away just the two of you from time to time to renew your commitments to each other. As you ascribe value to your marriage you will make it a priority!

We believe in being born again of water-by immersion in the name of the Lord “Jesus” Christ for the remission of sins, and in Spirit baptism of the Holy Ghost - speaking in other tongues as the Spirit gives utterance.

We believe in divine healing, communion and foot washing.

We believe in presenting our bodies a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable unto God.

We believe in expressions of praise with lifted hands, hand clapping, playing of musical instruments, voice of praise and dancing.
