A satellite navigation system a.k.a. sat nav system is a system of satellites, usually managed by one company or a country that provides geo-spatial positioning, which is a technical term for a specific location on or above the Earth in 3 dimensions.

Sat Nav systemSat Nav systems use a series of satellites placed in specific orbits around the Earth to figure out where the Receiver is located. The satellites transmit orbital and timing information. The receiver uses this information from several satellites to calculate its position. Commercial systems are accurate to couple meters, but high-end systems are accurate to a few centimeters.

In development 2

Compass is a global navigation system being developed by China that will consist of 35 satellites and is expected to be completed in 2020. It is the 2nd

generation of its regional BeiDouSatellite Navigation System(BDS), a.k.a. BeiDou-2

Galileo is a 30-satellite global navigation system being developed by the EuropeanUnion(EU) and European Space Agency, expected to be completed in 2020. One of the goals of this system is to provide a high-precision positioning system for EU nations i.e. independent of GLONASS, GPS, IRNSS

Sat Phone

A satellite telephone, or a sat phone is a type of mobile phone that connects to orbiting satellites instead of terrestrial cell sites.

Inmarsat

Only Inmarsat service is permitted in India for satellite communication. International Long Distance(ILD) licence and No Objection Certificate (NOC) issued by Indian Department of Telecommunications (DOT) is mandatory for satellite communication services on Indian territory. Import and operation of all other satellite services, including Thuraya & Iridium, is illegal
