Why do I do what I do? – By Sandeep Gupta

The philosophy behind

Top-One-Percent … The 99th Percentile Club

Exclusive Video GMAT-Prep for 99th percentile aspirants – not for everyone!

Hi! This is Sandeep Gupta … AND I am NOT a GMAT Trainer.

INSTEAD, I am the only GMAT Trainer in the world for exclusive 99th percentile (≥760) scores.

So if you genuinely want a lower than 760 score, please don’t contact me. I am not the right training

partner for you.

99th percentile (760-800 range) happens to be the highest percentile score on the GMAT.

ONLY one percent people in the world get 99th percentile scores (that’s why it is called the 99th

percentile).

BUT, in the last five years, 56% of all reported scores by my students have been in the 99th percentile.

This means, my students’ success-rate is 56 times the average success-rate on the GMAT.

Can YOU get a 99th percentile score?

Even if you are at a level of 360, you can get a score of 760. Your current level doesn’t matter. You may

be an absolute beginner; there is no problem even if you have forgotten what a prime number is or what

a pronoun means. BUT … you have to be … HAVE TO BE … extremely sincere … AND extremely serious

… about a 99th percentile score. So please bear in mind the following:

You are not the right student for me if:

1. You are LAZY

2. You are COMPLACENT [“Even if my life is ‘screwed up’, I am fine being mediocre (UGHHH!!!),

because I am too complacent to change anything.”]

3. You don’t mind belonging to the BOTTOM 99 Percent

I want you to strive for only top-one-percent excellence: The simple motto of your life must be:

“Whatever I take up, I will try to beat the best in the world, not my neighbor, colleague, or friend.” I want

only those people who want to belong to only the top-one-percent.

Something about me: I used to work as a pizza-delivery boy, a construction worker, a porter, a waiter,

and an auto-rickshaw driver. If you think that it takes some genius to get a 99th percentile score on the

GMAT, you are terribly mistaken. By every stretch of imagination, I had been an utter failure throughout

my school and college years (the highest percentage scored by me EVER until the end of college was 47

– in my 6th Std.).

LATER in life, I could make it to Harvard Business School’s 2 year full-time MBA Program (final

admit) because of my 99th percentile score (I have scored 770, 770, and 800 in the past), outstanding

storytelling abilities, and extremely persuasive communication skills. In addition to this, I dropped out

of IIMA’s two-year full-time MBA program in 1996.

I want my LONG ROAD to be your SHORT CUT. I have spent more than a decade learning and

crystallizing my special techniques (OCTAVE, PRIME, ACT, ACED, and LINGO) to such a level that you

can consume everything in just 360 hours and get a 99th percentile score.

Why so much insistence on Top-One-Percent?

Roughly 300,000 people write the GMAT every year. Let’s assume you score only 700 (which is equal

to 89th percentile. Check here.), your rank is about 33,000th. This means you are behind 33,000 GMAT

takers in a single year. Now imagine that you come 33,000th in a competition (or a race) or that you are

the 33,000th best employee (programmer, coder, accountant, salesperson etc.) of the company you work

for!!! A score of 700 on the GMAT means this level: behind 33,000 people in in a single year. If this level

is acceptable to you, I am not the right training partner for you. I don’t want you to aim for the 33,000th

rank.

My message: don’t settle for anything that is just about average, above average, good, or very good.

Strive for not even an iota short of exceptional excellence, a level of excellence where competition and

comparison cease to matter, where YOU are in a majority of ONE. Absolutely nothing short of TOP-ONE-

PERCENT!

YOU might argue: “Sandeep, I don’t want a ≥760 score. My business school is ready to take me at a

score of 500-600-700. Why should I try so hard?”

My answer: No problem. Just don’t contact me if you target anything lower than 760. I don’t desperately

want your wallet. I am not doing it primarily for the money … there is a larger purpose in my training. I

don’t mind losing a non-serious candidate. I am not after your purse if you don’t fit the bill – YOU

have to target ≥760 score.

BECAUSE … to me, Top-One-Percent is not about GMAT score alone; it is a philosophy for living your

life. And I don’t want to compromise this philosophy for some quick bucks. Think about the following

question:

• If you are a programmer (or designer or accountant or salesperson), do you belong to the absolute-

best pool (among the top-one-percent) of programmers in the world?

Whether you are a banker, cook, sportsperson, or an MBA, the same logic applies: do you belong to the

absolute-best pool (among the top-one-percent) of people in the world?

You and I both know that the answer to the above question is a thumping NOOOO!

The thrill of belonging to the best of the best in the world can’t be described in words. The feeling is to

die for: it is like winning your Olympic Gold. So if you have never been in the Top-One-Percent at anything

so far, make your start with a 99th percentile score on your GMAT. And your B-School journey will

become much easier. Are you game?

The practical rewards of a Top-One-Percent Score:

Life after any top 10 global B-School is surely worth craving (imagine your starting salary as $150,000-

$200,000 per year) and the journey starts with a high GMAT score. A high score gives you the power to

change the next 20-30 years of your life and career. With a great GMAT score, you will be many miles

closer to your top B-School dream. You will join the prestigious 99th percentile Club of GMAT takers.

I feel privileged to be a part of possibly the biggest career decision of your life; it is definitely not easy

for a working professional to leave his / her job for one or two years; there is so much at stake (money,

loans, time, relocation, family, opportunity cost, and ROI). I fully understand the stakes and believe that

I can make the first lap of this journey much easier (and much more enjoyable) for you. So when you

train with me, you get to learn from someone for whom the GMAT has been an obsession for two full

decades. Here is my promise:

If you are a sincere GMAT taker, you can’t find anything even one-tenth as good on this planet.

Start your GMAT Preps TODAY. The time to take the right decision is NOW.

The more you delay your GMAT, the more time you are wasting

in a non-satisfactory life and career.

T&C Apply:

At Top-One-Percent, ‘T&C’ doesn’t mean Terms & Conditions; rather it means

“Transparency” & “Candor”

Transparency: More than anything else, I believe in being absolutely honest, genuine, and truthful. To

me, my integrity and trust count for much more than money. You can check my official test-score reports

with unique links and authentication codes on our website. Even when we show our results in our video

testimonials on our website, we give the links to the students’ FB / LinkedIn profiles. You can check

everything all along the line.

Candor: We never give you any false hopes. NEVER EVER! If your efforts are not in sync with a 99th

percentile score, we will be absolutely frank and forthright with you. It is like: Even if you hire the best

fitness trainer in the world, it is useless if you don’t exercise. We never believe in “sugarcoating” anything.

If you are doing badly in a mock test or if you seem insincere, you must be ready for a “real” taste of

some bitter medicine. If truth feels bitter, SO BE IT!!!

Why Top-One-Percent GMAT (www.top-one-percent.com)?

I. Why T.O.P.-GMAT and not any other institute?

1. If you are an Indian applying to a top business school, no matter how good your profile, a high GMAT

score (minimum 730 … although even 730 is a borderline case … actually you need 750+ to be truly

in the race) is an absolute must if you don’t want to be rejected because of your LOW GMAT score.

Unless you have led teams in ten different countries, know more than five global languages, have

been a serial entrepreneur, have generated millions of dollars of funding for your startup idea, have

run five companies before, or have a recommendation from Mr. Narayan Murthy etc., a score below

730 means NOTHING (for an Indian applicant) … when it comes to applying to the top 10 business

schools in the world.

2. Sadly, NOT even a single GMAT-Training institute apart from Top-One-Percent in the entire

country trains you to get an exclusive 750+ score. The trainers at most of these institutes have never

even written the GMAT, let alone have scored in the 99th percentile (≥760). It is like hiring a

swimming instructor who has never been in the pool himself / herself.

3. This is where Top-One-Percent comes into the picture. I train you exclusively for a ≥760 score on

the GMAT and make sure that your LOW GMAT score doesn’t become the biggest hurdle in the

journey of your dream education and career. That’s why I don’t want you as a student unless you

want a ≥760 score.

4. I am so confident of my teaching, material, motivation, and personal help (doubt clearing, counseling

etc.) because I have never (NEVER EVER) scored less than the 99th percentile on any of my GMAT

attempts (my highest GMAT score has been 800/800). In addition, I have a perfect score on the GRE

(year 1996 – old test pattern 2400/2400), SAT (year 2010 – 2400/2400), and IIM-CAT (100

percentile score in 2002).

• There is no other GMAT Trainer in the entire country having an official 99th percentile

score on the real GMAT (with an official proof – a unique link and authentication code).

• Still, if you wish to risk your career, go ahead and join absolutely third-rate training

elsewhere. Even if you wish not to join me, for your own benefit, insist upon an official score

report (with a unique link and authentication code) of the trainers at other institutes. If

anyone shows you an official score report of a 99th percentile score with a unique link and

authentication code, I will train you free-of-cost.

5. In addition to acing these tests myself, I have been teaching for these tests since 1996 (for more than

18 years). In the process of interacting with more than 100,000 students over these years, I ended

up developing the smartest possible techniques (OCTAVE, PRIME, ACT, ACED, and LINGO) … and,

over the last decade, have finessed these techniques to such a level that you just need to give me a

sincere effort of 360 hours to ensure a ≥760 score on your GMAT. You needn’t reinvent the wheel; I

have done all the hard work for you. It is like getting an instant injection of my brain into yours.

When you train with me, you save precious time, money, energy, and effort required in figuring it

out all by yourself. With me, you get the 99th percentile recipe on a platter.

6. With admits to Harvard (didn’t join) and IIM Ahmedabad (dropped out), McKinsey Domain Consulting Assignments, and a flourishing speaking (I am the ace mentor at the World’s Greatest Speaker Training – USA, at Public Speakers’ University – London, and Professional Speakers’ Academy – London) and writing (I am the author of the bestselling book Million Dollar Solopreneur) career, I still choose to teach the GMAT. For me, it is not a route to some quick bucks; I just LOVE training for the GMAT. For the last 18 years, GMAT has been nothing short of an obsession for me. I am driven by making the dream of absolutely the very best education in the world a reality for you

(I am sure that, for any working professional in the world, including even the presidents of the

United States, nothing is / was / has been more coveted than an MBA from Harvard).

No kidding here: I train you to get admitted to the Harvard MBA.

II. What Proof do I have that it works? Only eight business schools in the world are truly global b-schools: Harvard, Stanford, Wharton, Booth, Kellogg, MIT-Sloan, LBS, and INSEAD. The rest are not truly global. We have students regularly selected to each of these schools. Check some of the

Meet your other trainer: Autrri Chakravarti

Director - B-School Admissions Consulting Division (at T.O.P.-GMAT) and Expert Faculty in Test-Strategy (at T.O.P.-

GMAT); B. Engg. and MSc Finance from Imperial College, London; MBA from London Business School.

Imagine experiencing life in all its kaleidoscopic colors by the age of 18; imagine the pain of having to leave your

home country at the drop of a hat and having to settle in a foreign land with no money; imagine going through

the daily discrimination in the eyes of the native English population while trying to find your moorings in a

foreign land; imagine working as a barista at a café while your friends at the college are driving BMWs; imagine

convincing the Dean of Imperial College London to allow you to study without paying your tuition; imagine

opening a chain of restaurants (in metropolitan London) by the age of 21; imagine falling in love with a Russian

woman 5 years older and marrying her instantly; imagine getting an extremely coveted role in the biggest

Investment Bank in the world (Goldman Sachs); imagine writing the GMAT and making it to London Business

School by the sheer force of your compelling story; and imagine leaving all this success in a fit of that “I-am-

not-loving-what-I-am-doing” moment after attending the “Know The World In 24 Hours” (check http://the-

bold-you.blogspot.in/ - it will take your breath away – more than 150 people have endorsed it by writing personal

comments) course run by Sandeep … and imagine starting as a B-Schools Admissions Consultant at T.O.P.-GMAT,

and LOVING every moment of it !!!

No! This is not the script for a Hollywood Blockbuster … this is Autrri incarnate – in flesh and blood.

Versatility epitomized: Amateur gastronome (he cooks really well), budding wine connoisseur, serial

entrepreneur, contrarian investor, passionate storyteller ... these are some of the ways in which Autrri would

describe himself.

Autrri now calls Bangalore home, having spent the last 15 years living and working across the globe – London,

New York, Boston, Moscow, Singapore. After high school at St. Xavier’s, Kolkata, Autrri self-funded his studies –

through a mix of scholarships, part-time work, sheer determination (and good fortune!) – first at Ashbourne

College London (A-Levels); then Imperial College London (B.Engg. & MSc. Finance); and lastly at London Business

School (MBA).

Working at Goldman Sachs Asset Management (GSAM) and setting up his entrepreneurial ventures gave Autrri

insight into the inner workings of people’s minds and the influence of cultural / geographic / socio-economic

factors on the way people behave. Ultimately, Autrri realized that it was this core (intrinsic) understanding of

“WHAT PEOPLE WANT” that set him apart. He brings this philosophy to his role as an admissions consultant and

test-taking strategies specialist faculty at T.O.P.-GMAT. Autrri has produced some exceptional results in the past;

you can see the air of pride in his strides when any of his students makes it to a top B-School.

To unwind, Autrri keeps himself up-to-date with the happenings at Old Trafford; tunes into his insanely huge

(1960-90) rock-n-roll collection; watches Tarantino / Nolan / Scorcese / Coppola … the list is endless ... movies;

and voraciously reads fiction.

GMAT-CAT (Computer Adaptive Test) insights

• Exam lasts for about 4 hrs. A test of stamina, concentration, mental toughness and PACE! All these are more important than mere PREPARATION.

• CAT format: questions & answers differ for each test taker

• CAT format: applicable only to Quant and Verbal Sections; the AWA / IR sections are separately graded

• Correct → more difZicult question / more marks Incorrect → Easier question / fewer marks

• Harder questions count more than the easier ones

• Scores are based on number of questions answered correctly, the difficulty level of those questions, and even the position / location of those questions.

• You cannot skip a question; you can’t return to any previous question; you can’t change an answer

• Must finish the sections! Strong penalty (up to 50 points per section) for not finishing any section …

• There are a few experimental questions in each section

GMAT-CAT (Computer Adaptive Test) insights … continued

• You can take the GMAT once per calendar month (once every 31 days) and not more than 5 times in one calendar year

• The scores are valid for 5 years

• You will see IR, Verbal, Quant, and Total Score immediately

• You may cancel the score but all test dates/scores are shown on record

• Official Report only after 1 week (with essay grades)

• Can send scores to 5 schools “FREE”

• ALL scores of ALL tests within last 5 years sent to schools

• Latest addition: After seeing your score, if you are not happy, you may cancel that score.

GMAT Scores:

• Essay grades are from 0-6 in 0.5 increments.

• Quantitative from 0 to 51 (known as scaled score)

• Verbal from 0 to 45 (known as scaled score)

• Total Score from 200-800 in 10 point increments. 760-800 means 99th percentile – the highest percentile anyone can get.

• The GMAT is a mind-game – play it like one

• Preparation alone can’t ensure any score… execution during those four hours means everything

• Stamina, Concentration, Mental Toughness, and Pace are equally crucial

• Practice with the right content – the key to success

• RC is the most crucial among all test areas

• Master PATTERNS – and conquer the test

Understanding GMAT

SUCCESS ON THE TEST RECIPE FOR DISASTER

1. Subject Preparation is thorough (this will matter only to the tune of 50%)

1. Preparation is gimmicky.

2. Thorough Mental Preparation (Remaining 50% contributor to your success)

2. Lack of three vital ingredients: Concentration, Mental Toughness, and Steady nerves

3. Pattern Based Study 3. Study just to get the answer correct

4. Zero errors on RC under time pressure 4. RC makes you panic

5. Studying the weakest areas the most 5. Studying the strongest areas more often

6. Pace: finishing the test is the most important

6. Slow pace, so towards the test you tend to have too many wrong answers in a row.

7. Try not to have more than one wrong answers in a row

7. ≥2 wrong answers in a row.

8. Quality over quantity. A lot of analysis and deliberation on each question

8. Mindless solving of hundreds of questions

9. Studying the Right Content 9. Studying Irrelevant Content

10. Doing a few four-hour long simulated CATs (but not too many)

10. Avoiding four-hour long simulations

IV. How are we really different?

• Other GMAT-prep companies in the country offer training only in 500-550 level range—be it competence, content, class, candor, or conviction—their training falls short of the rigor required for 99th percentile scores.

• We believe that The Official Guides cater to 500-550 level (junk); despite the fact that the OGs are irrelevant when it comes to 99th percentile scores (760-800 score range), instructors at other institutes treat them as the Holy Grail (the be all and end all) of GMAT-Preps; the results are disastrous.

• We strongly believe that the GMAT should NOT be considered an Adaptive Test but rather a linear test. A million problems can be kissed away with just a small mindset-shift.

• We strongly believe that there are no time-sucker questions on the GMAT, only suckers who fall for them. If you have the right approach, every problem on the real-GMAT can be solved in less than 90 seconds. If you take more than 90 seconds on a particular problem, the question is not tough; your approach is definitely WRONG.

• A lot of students are made to believe that studying for the GMAT means spending 90% of their preparation time on Sentence Correction (SC) … nothing could be a bigger disservice to yourself. SC is extremely crucial, but not at the cost of Reading Comprehension (RC).

• The most crucial area for the GMAT is RC, which is given the least attention by students and faculty alike. Each RC question counts as much as 3 times each SC question and each CR question. So if your RC accuracy is not near 100% under time constraints in the 4th hour on the test (when your concentration is likely to be at its weakest), you will not cross the coveted 700 mark. RC is the most crucial test area … woefully neglected by everyone.

• If you want a high score, you have to make sure you don’t make consecutive mistakes. Again, RC becomes the most crucial area; if you don’t do well on a specific passage, you are likely to get 3-4 consecutive wrong answers.

• As per GMAC, three consecutive mistakes anywhere on the test can pull your ‘current’ score down by 80-100 points. The position of the questions doesn’t matter.

• We tell you the Test-Maker’s perspective as opposed to the Test-Taker’s perspective. Every difficult problem on the real GMAT (at the highest level) is made in such a way that wrong answers seem more attractive than the right answer. The test-makers know exactly how an average human brain thinks and falls for traps. Training for such traps constitutes more than 50% of our training.

• We strongly believe that the GMAT is not a test of Math or English; it is a test of reading and reasoning. Quite often, people who are exceptionally good at English don’t manage a high Verbal Score and people who are exceptionally good at Math fail miserably on the Quant Section.

• Ours is a NO-FLUFF-ALL-STUFF course. o You will not find that out of the 5000 pages of material given to you, only 500 pages are worth reading. o If you sit through a 3-hour session, you will find value in each of the 180 minutes. You will not feel that

more than 150 minutes were spent discussing something that you could have managed yourself / that you knew in advance / that didn’t add any value.

• We wouldn’t want to hear any excuses. If you do not do the handouts before watching the session, you will have an extremely frustrating experience. BUT if you are the serious GMAT contender, you can’t find a better course anywhere on this planet.

• Special copyrighted techniques for each of the subject areas: OCTAVE (RC), PRIMEX (SC), ACT (CR), ACED (DS), and LINGO (PS). No other institute in the world has such effective strategies to crack each of the test areas.

• The trainer who has gone out there and done it in the middle at the highest level (99th percentile). Learn from those who have seen it all and done it all.

• We will cover each of the GMAT areas – Verbal: Reading Comprehension (RC), Sentence Correction (SC), Critical

Reasoning (CR); Quantitative: Data Sufficiency (DS), Problem Solving (PS), Analytical Writing Assessment (AWA - Analysis of an Argument), and Integrated Reasoning (IR) - in detail.

• We focus exclusively on top scores - the 99th percentile range (760-800 range). To this effect, our sessions demand an unparalleled seriousness from your side. Our sessions are very intensive and rigorous and demand an effort of at least 20 hours per week (on average, at least 3 hours per day, assuming you are working). If you are not working (or are on a break), we want you to put in 8-10 hours every day.

• We will provide you with all the content: Basic and Advanced Concepts including concept books, including the latest 750-800 level questions, elementary practice, advanced practice, 700-800 level question bank, latest collection of questions from the real GMAT, and Computer based Test Series etc. In addition our own content, we will provide you with all the usual content: the Official Guides, and any other content available anywhere in the world. All the content related to the GMAT around the world will be extended to you in soft copy. There is not a single resource on the GMAT that you will not have access to.

• An absolute guarantee that the GMAT will not test you on anything outside of the course content covered here. Each type of question on your test will have been covered in detail. Even at the highest level (99th percentile), not even one question will seem alien to you (if you do all the content as advised).

• Most important: the right mental training for the right execution ... the most critical part of this training.

• All material (Concepts, Theory, Practice, Test Series, Extra Help etc.) to be provided by us. You are not supposed to refer to anything else at all.

• If you need some special material (such as help from absolute basics in Math or Grammar or some challenging practice content in any area), please ask us. We will provide you with all such content. Don’t study anything else at all.

• Please solve our TOP-GMAT Challenge (30 questions) on our website www.top-one-percent.com.

• Also, please do visit our website www.top-one-percent.com and check everything to know more about us.

Expectations from YOU

• Results come only when you put in the effort. A 610 student also gets the same session as 780 student. So the difference is not in instruction / service quality. The difference is clearly in the efforts put in by a student. Our training program works only if you work. No MAGIC MANTRAS – You have to put in a lot of hard work.

• We are committed to a ≥760 score for you. ARE YOU COMMITTED ENOUGH? If your level of commitment is for a 500 score, there is going to be only frustration.

• Keep pace with the sessions – no backlogs.

• The course is homework-driven. Do all homework in time – there is no exception to this condition.

don’t put in the effort, we cannot do anything for you.

Commitment: There is only one objective—to help you improve your score on the GMAT—we always go that extra mile. The same is expected of you—be absolutely committed—do whatever is asked of you.

Success Ingredients on the GMAT

• Conviction … the belief that you can get a 99th percentile score … check this BELIEF CHANGE video that shows how, on the very first day, the students were driven to aim for a 99th percentile … check it here

• Commitment … fight to the finish no matter what … don’t leave it in between

• Consistency … daily input rather than bouts / bursts of preparation

• Concept mastery … to such an extent that practicing further doesn’t improve you … to the extent that you know for sure that you are right before checking the answer … to the extent that if you have enough time, you will NOT get even one answer wrong

• Content mastery … not mindless finishing o Practice with the right content o No mindless practice … practice / fix / practice / fix / practice / fix … the ideal pattern o No irrelevant content o Test maker’s perspective (psychometrician … how to make the wrong choice seem more attractive than the

right choice) / Traps o Pattern based preparation o Quality over quantity. A lot of analysis and deliberation on each question o Must not check the solution to any problem unless you completely give up. When you believe: “Even if I

have one more hour to solve this question, I won’t be able to solve it.” … then it is the right time to refer to the solutions.

o The idea is to fix your weaknesses, not celebrate your strengths

GMAT Specifics:

• Techniques / Approaches … OCTAVE / ACT / ANT / PRIME / LINGO / ACED o Get the answer in less than 90 seconds o “Knowing that you are right” versus “being right but not being sure”.

• Stamina to sit for four hours at absolutely peak-concentration level. (Remember the best-concentration time of your life. You have to repeat that occasion in terms of concentration).

o Concentration … Four-hour RC / CR practice with LSAT content under strict time-limits

• Pace / Pacing o Consecutive mistakes o RC being more important (ensure 100% accuracy on RC, no matter what) o Pacing charts

Quant (10Q done, 55 minutes left / 20Q done, 35 minutes left / 30Q done, 15 minutes left … for the last seven questions, you must have more than 14 minutes remaining).

Verbal (10Q done, 58 minutes left / 20Q done, 41 minutes left / 30Q done, 24 minutes left … for the last eleven questions, you must have more than 22 minutes remaining).

o Finishing the test … severe penalty for not finishing

• Mental toughness o Exit strategy … maximum 2½ minutes per question

Execution o Adaptive nature of the test … it is a disaster if it keeps playing on your mind o Nerves … if you are the one who freaks out at the thought of an aptitude test, you need to train your mind. o No guessing on the level of a question (“I wonder whether it is a 500 level or a 750 level question?” is disastrous

thinking) / No guessing whether a question is experimental or real o Mind-game … the exam is out to play a serious mind-game with you. It is your job to defeat its intention. o Ensure good sleep the night before the test o Ensure that your routine / habits are not disrupted
