The Eye of Africa PGA Championship enters its 4th year in 2019. The tournament is scheduled from the 31st of January to the 3rd of February, a little earlier than usual but that may avoid the blistering heat and subsequent thunderstorms of past years.
We are proud to once again have the opportunity to host the tournament and our residents have been asking for months for confirmation of the dates.
We have a history of play offs and exciting finishes and hopefully this trend continues.
The buzz around the estate and golf course starts weeks before the tournament with Professionals coming in to practice daily on the only fully Cynodon course in the country.
The days following the tournament also provide entertainment with every one trying to “play it like the Pros”
We look forward to a long and fruitful history with the PGA Championships.

COMPETITION WINNERSGlorious Gardens
We launched our 1st annual Glorious Gardens Competition and
received an impressive number of entrants.
The competition, which is run by the Gardening Committee, saw a
wealth of beautiful gardens entered and highlighted the hard work
and dedication that residents put into their outdoor spaces.
Overall there were 26 entrants and the gardens were judged
over two days by John Drummond - Landscapes Archictects and
Environmental Planners, Johann van der Westhuizen - Garden
Committee Chairman and Marissa du Preez - The Eye Magazine.
The judges were very impressed with all the gardens and agreed
that the standard for 2018 was extremely high and the residents
had done an incredible job.
The winners of the competition were officially announced on the
17th November and our entrants were treated to morning coffee
and sweet treats compliments of The Greens Grillhouse. Entrants

Who’s New atTHE EYE OF AFRICA
Food & Beverage ManagerRoché has been in the industry for over a decade and has worked across a board spectrum of industries, including wine farms, restaurants, game lodges and golf estates.
Classically trained at Backsberg Wine Estate, situated between Paarl and Stellenbosch in the Western Cape, Roche majored in hospitality management. A proud mom of an energetic 1-year old boy, Roché made the move to The Eye of Africa in search of a lifestyle change. The fast and exciting pace that Johannesburg offers was too tempting to ignore and coupled with the thrill of working at such an expansive golf estate like The Eye of Africa, Roché had little hesitation moving to our side of the world.
In her short time with us at The Eye, Roché has already been thrilled by the incredibly friendly, driven and relaxed at heart people at the estate. The care and interest shown for the Eye is testament that working here is more than just a job; it’s born from a genuine love of the estate.
Roché is delighted that she’ll be managing two restaurants, while helping to grow The Old School Deli and being a part of the golf estate’s great culture.
Head ChefChef Rocco, our new executive head chef at the Old School Deli, has already made waves at The Eye of Africa with his decadent pastries and delicious cakes and confectionary. A baking and gastronomic prodigy, Chef Rocco believes that a chef’s touch should turn a dish into pure magic.
Chef Rocco’s love of food hails from the Italian side of his family, particularly his mother. Equally adept at delivering contemporary comfort food, cutting edge gastronomical fine dining or a combination of the two, Chef Rocco has honed and perfected his craft over more than 30 years in the industry.
Chef Rocco has worked in kitchens across the Tsogo Sun hotel group, Sun International and notable golf estates like Pearl Valley, Copperleaf and Woodhill.
Having cooked for presidents, members of parliament and captains of industry, Chef Rocco is well attuned to delivering only the finest cuisine – and so it has already proved at the Eye since he started a little over a month ago. A talented patisserie chef and molecular gastronomy enthusiast, Chef Rocco is excited to bring The Old School Deli up to a new and exacting standard, where his creativity and love of cooking will create masterpieces for years to come.

ASSOCIATIONCHANGE IN CONTACT DETAILS Recent changes to our telecommunication provider meant that some of our contact details have had to change, please save the new numbers.
HOA Office: From 010 035 1032 To: 010 140 1626Control Room: From 083 631 5599 To: 010 140 4396
All the mobile numbers for HOA members, including security personnel remain the same. We trust that this change will alleviate the current problems that we had been experiencing therefore enhancing the service we provide to our residents. Please feel free to contact any member of the HOA should you need further information.
LANDSCAPE GENERALThe Estate is continuously improving the landscaping on all common areas. We would like to thank all the residents who have been donating trees and plants that have been planted into the parks. Areas that we have recently improved is left of the Contractors Gate, the Hoepoe park as well as Weaver park. Be on the lookout for other areas that are scheduled to be improved. Any resident that would like to make a donation of plants or trees are welcome to contact Johann from our gardening committee to arrange collection.
SECURITYOur evaluation period for the new access control system, DataPro, has ended and we are happy to report that the results proved highly positive. The system will continue to develop with identified needs, including our App which assists with the creation of access codes for all visitors.
Access control at the main-gate has changed slightly in that the personnel will no longer receive pre-cleared codes to provide access for any situation. These include special golf days and/or access for larger birthday parties. The guards at the main gate will direct a visitor without an access code to the correct telephone number to obtain codes. Kindly get in touch with the HOA should further information be needed.
The Intelligent Cameras for our third phase perimeter protection are being installed. Both fibre and electrical lines to all the boundaries are currently underway and the first two thermals cameras are already up and running. There will be a massive drive to have the perimeter completely under surveillance before the 15th of December.
Residents are not to collect their unregistered domestic helpers from outside the Estate. All domestic helpers and gardeners have to be registered. The HOA will gladly assist with registration to ensure that staff members are provided with unhindered access.
With the holiday period upon us, and the number of celebrations being planned at our homes, I would like to request that residents be considerate to their neighbours.
Fireworks are banned in the estate and we would caution all residents that fines will be imposed should you not adhere to this.
BUILDING CONTROLI would like to advise all residents that strict rules remain with regards to contractors on the Estate during the holiday period. There is to be no construction during this period and the contractors gate is closed. This is not to be circumvented by allowing contractors through the main gate.
Due to various problems experienced by residents regarding their house design and plan submissions in accordance with our Architectural Guidelines, our control architects have drafted a document that will assist owners in streamlining their building and design process. Please log onto GLOportal and download this useful information.
CHRISTMAS COMPETITIONWe’re giving you the chance to win a fabulous hamper just in time for all the Christmas lunches. If you love Christmas and decorating your home then you’ll love this competition.
We’re looking for the best decorated Christmas house in the Estate. As residents start putting up their decorations over the coming weeks, we will be on the lookout for the best house. You can also send us photos of your house to [email protected] to make sure we do not miss your house. In addition, we’ll upload the images as they come in, to an image gallery on the community website so we can all enjoy some of the fabulous creations across the Estate.
COMMUNITY WEBSITEWe have launched an amazing community website for all the residents. You are now able to access all the information regarding events, facilities, bookings and more at the touch of a button. Go to www.communityeoa.co.zaand take a look.
Myself and the HOA team would like to wish all our residents a peaceful festive season and a prosperous new year. Should you be travelling safe travels and see you all in the new year.

Summer is here and it shows. Golf days have picked up and our members are on the practice tee honing their skills. It also brings an end to a very good winter for the course and for our league teams. This year they really came out guns blazing with our scratch league and better ball sides ending the year victorious. Our better ball side is now in the A-division having started in the E-division 4 years ago, and the scratch league side is now in the C-division after winning the D-division.
This is indicative of our membership growing, and in turn, creating a larger selection of players to choose from. Congratulations also go out to our Knockout winners, in the singles, Tshidiso Nkgoedi was victorious over Craig Lennon, and in the doubles, Mike Theodorou and Myself beat Piet du Plessis and Stephen Bracher in the final.
The Eye has been raining hole in one’s. Over the last two months, we saw no fewer than 4 players achieve their maiden fluke shot. Congratulations to the following players; Kyle Naidoo, Christo Roos, Tommy Shaw and Rajesh Singh.
Let’s not forget our main event the PGA Championship Tournament which we will be hosted from the31st January – 3rd February 2019. We encourage all residents to take a walk with the pro golfers and enjoy four days of excellent golf. The course will be closed from the 28th January up until the 10th February to prepare and host this prestigious event. Members are reminded that we offer reciprocity with 18 other golf clubs while the course is closed. Contact the pro shop for more details.
One of our aims for 2019 is to see our junior membership and participation grow. Saturday times will be allocated for the juniors to walk and play or be accompanied by a parent in a cart. There will be a coaching clinic covering different aspects of the game each week after play.
On a not so positive note, we understand that while it is very pleasant to walk on the golf course, it is extremely dangerous. Please refrain from going for walks on the golf course before 16h00, as you will be asked to leave. A resident was recently hit by a golf ball who did not adhere to this. Residents are also reminded to carry dog poop bags when walking their dogs on the estate and golf course.
It has been disturbing to see children riding their bicycles on the greens on numerous occasions, should children be caught with their bicycles on the golf course, their bicycles will be confiscated.
All this being said, is this not the greatest place to live in Johannesburg. With all the activities that we have on our doorstep, there is no excuse to spend your days indoors.

TOUGH TIMES AREN’T ALWAYS BAD TIMESTwo choices in our lives. That’s pretty much what it comes down to. In every situation in life we have two choices. We can be positive, or we can be
negative. In his book ‘Don’t choke’ Gary Player explains the decision that he took which had a huge influence on his career.
As he sat on a plane over the Atlantic, he had to choose. He had just missed the cut in the Open Championship at Royal Troon. It’s true that Troon
that year was a terrifying prospect. The course was bone dry, and the bad bounces so typical of links golf all found their way to Gary Player that week.
It was one of the few occasions in his life, while battling through a miserable Open experience that he reached a point where he couldn’t go on. That
course had him beat, and everything he tried felt pointless. And as a result a disappointing Open.
It was a bad blow in what
had been a hard year for him.
He finished second at The
Masters, and while this may
sound like nothing to get too
worked up about, he really
felt that he deserved to win
that one more than he did
the previous year. Then he
finished sixth in the US Open.
But he wasn’t winning. Then
came the blow of Troon. Gary
needed to make a four on the
last hole of the second round
to make the cut. On the 18th
he hit his ball out of bounds
and missed the cut by one
stroke.
So there he sat, on a plane
flying over to his next major
– the PGA championship at
Aronimink. – with a reasonable
positive attitude. The whole
golfing world knew that Gary had two choices, and on that plane he was already a long way down the road toward the one choice that doesn’t win
you a club championship, never mind a major. So he decided to make the switch. He got back his passion and the hunger that had always driven
him. He couldn’t wait for the next tournament in order to redeem himself. He analysed what he had done wrong and put it behind him. Having never
played at Aronimink he decided that he was going to love that course, he was going to love that place. He had prepared himself mentally and made
up his mind that he was going to have a great week and visualized himself winning the PGA championship.
At the end of the championship it was a short putt on the 18th that sealed a one shot victory over Bob Goalby.
The beauty of golf is the ‘one shot at a time’ philosophy it engenders. It forces you to focus on the moment and not on what happened in a previous
shot or what is going to happen in a shot to come. The great golfers are the ones who are able to move on from a bad shot and see the current
shot as a fresh start. So many times we have seen a player carry one bad shot early in the round with them in their minds and ruin an entire round
because of this.
A bad shot must be seen in the light of its ability to force a correction. We learn the most through our mistakes, not our successes. And we grow the
most in tough times. If we can get our heads around this and see tough times a s a chance for growth and cheaper meaning, we can arm ourselves
with the most powerful weapon known to man – optimism. We need to teach our children that there are two choices, Gary Player made the shift in
his mind on that plane trip, and rubber stamped it with his game. We all have two choices in everything, yet it is amazing how many people choose
to be negative and miserable. This is what our children see and grow up with. The future of this country lies in those choices and the example that
we set for our children.
‘Every great golfer has learnt to think positively. To assume the success and not the failure of a shot, to disregard misfortune and to accept disaster, and never to indulge the futility of remorse and blame. These are the hardest lessons of all.‘ Pat Ward-Thomas

Salt Dough DecorationsHere’s what you will need:
1 Cup Salt 2 Cups Flour 3/4 Cup Water (maybe a little more) Star Cookie Cutters Ribbon Bells For sealing: mod podge or a clear glaze spray
How to make them:
1. Begin by mixing the flour and salt together.
2. Add the water until it starts to form a dough.
3. If it feels a little dry, you can add more water, adding one tablespoon at a time. If it is too sticky, then add a little more flour in.
4. Knead the dough until it forms a soft ball. You will need to knead for at least 5-10 minutes to get it to a good consistency. Roll it out to about 1/2 inch in thickness.
5. Cut out star shapes using a small and large star cookie cutter and add your ribbon holes.
6. Place the salt dough shapes on a parchment paper lined cookie sheet or non-stick baking pan and bake at 120°C for about 2-2.5 hours (Adults only). If the dough is not completely dried out, you can let it bake longer or turn the temperature of the oven slightly up. If you do decide to turn the temperature up, keep an eye on the ornaments to make sure they do not puff up. If this happens, turn the temperature back down. If you find the ornaments are still not dry, let them sit out on a cookie drying rack to air dry overnight.
7. Once they are full dry, seal with either mod podge or a clear glaze spray. We like this spray for a durable finish. Adults should do the spraying and always follow directions of the product chosen. Sealing the final ornaments will help stop them from cracking in a few years. If you would like to paint them, paint the ornaments first and then seal them.
8. Next, thread some narrow ribbon through some bells and tie the ribbon around the salt dough ornaments so that the bell is in the center.

INGREDIENTS::250 ml Arborio Rice (or and other short-grain rice) 200 ml White Wine (infused with 5 strings of Saffron)1 Medium Onion (Chopped)¼ Green Pepper (Julienned) 150 g Portabella Mushrooms (sliced), actually any mushroom of your choice will do fine500 ml Chicken or Vegetable Stock1 Chorizo Sausage (Sliced) 30 ml Vegetable or Olive Oil30 ml Butter200 ml Parmigiano Cheese (try to get the “real” thing)….if you can’t, Pecorino or any other salty Italian hard cheese will do fine. 100 ml Cream (Fresh or long life)Black pepper Salt15 ml Parsley (Chopped)
STEP 1:Heat the oil on medium in a large pan or pot. Fry the sausage for a minute, remove and set aside. Add the onion and green pepper to the same pan and stir/fry for a minute of two until translucent. Add the rice. Mix in and stir for another minute. Add the saffron-infused Wine. Stir until all the wine is absorbed.
STEP 2:Start adding the stock. Do this a bit at a time (100 ml) or so. The rice needs to absorb all liquid before more stock is added. Continue to do so until all the stock is used up. DO NOT overcook the rice, get it to “al-dente” stage. (Cooked but firm and loose). Add the mushrooms before you add the last 100 ml stock. Mix and stir in.
STEP 3:Return the sausage to the pan, add the cheese, butter and cream. Mix through. Season with freshly milled black pepper, salt if needed, sprinkle parsley on top and some Parmigiano shavings. Serve immediately. (You, wait for the risotto the risotto must not wait for you…It will spoil the dish).
LET’S GETCOOKING!with Johann
RISOTTO Serves 2 – 4
Tips: To make risotto is not the easiest of meals to prepare, but follow my “simplified” method and if not by the first try, you will get it perfect the second time. It is important not overcook your risotto, try it and if hard , cook a bit longer by adding just water or a bit more stock, before moving to step 3. This recipe delivers 4 medium portions.
“One of the most rewarding dishes all year round and one of my absolute favouritesto make is Risotto. This easy 3 step Risotto will take you no longerthan 30 minutes and is worth the time.“
