Withinminutes,youcanconnecttoyourmobilenetworkanduseawirelessconnectiontotheInternetthroughthemobilenetwork.GlobeSurfer®IIiscompatiblewithGSMand3GmobilenetworksandsupportsGPRS,EDGE,UMTSandHSDPAtechnologies.Tip:Toachievethebestpossiblereception,checkthesignalstrengthonthedisplayoftheunit(themorebarsthebetterthereception).Youmayfindthatplacingtheunitnearawindowprovidesthebestreception.

Simple set-up

GlobeSurfer®IIprovidesyouwithaquickinstallationandset-upthatgetsyoueasilyandquicklyconnectedtotheInternet.YoucanuseanInternetbrowser(e.g.InternetExplorer6.0orFirefox1.5)andmostpersonalcomputers,includingWindows®,Macintosh®andLinux®.The‘QuickSetupWizard’introducesyoutothebasicsettingsthatneedtobeconfiguredforusewiththemobilenetwork.Onceyouhaveconfigured,youcanreviewandenablecustomisedwirelesssecuritysettings.

6.1 Review the basics

JustconnectingyourcomputertoGlobeSurfer®IIprovidesabasiclevelofprotectionbecauseitsupportsNetworkAddressTranslation(NAT).

6.2 Network Address Translation

YourGlobeSurfer®IIsupportsNAT.ThisnetworkservicemakesitpossibleforallofthecomputersinyournetworktoshareasingleIPaddress.ThisIPaddressisassignedtoyourGlobeSurfer®IIandistheonlyaddressthatisvisibletotheoutsideworld.TheprivateaddressesthatDHCPassignstocomputersinyournetworkremainprivateandcannotbereachedfromtheInternet.

6.3 Determine the wireless exposure

Ifyouliveinaruralareafarawayfromyourneighbour,thelikelihoodthat


someonewillbreakintoyourwirelessnetworkisverylow.Ontheotherhand,ifyouliveinadenselypopulatedareainthecitynexttoanofficebuilding,thereisapotentialdangerthatathirdpartymaytrytoaccessyourWLAN.

Basedonyourownsecurityneeds,decidewhichsecuritysettingsyouwanttoimplement:• ChangeSSID• DisableSSIDbroadcast• EnableWEP,WPA,orWPA�encryption

6.4 Firewall

YourGlobeSurfer®IIhasatruefirewallthatusesrulestocontroltheincomingandoutgoingdatatraffic.Thefirewallhasthreepre-definedlevelsofsecurity.Thedefault,‘typicalsecurity’,blockstrafficinitiatedbyanexternal(Internet)source,andallowstrafficinitiatedfromthelocalnetwork.

6.5 Control the traffic

AfirewallblocksuninvitedInternettrafficthatmightcausedamagetothecomputersinyournetwork.Beforetrafficisallowedinoroutofyournetwork,ithastopassthroughthefirewall.Incomingtrafficisexaminedtoseewhetheritmeetstheconditionsofincomingrules.Iftheconditionsaremet,thetrafficisallowedin.Outgoingtrafficisalsoexaminedandcomparedtooutgoingrulesbeforeitisallowedout.Rulesarebasedon

Internetservices,suchasFTP,TelnetandNetMeeting.Isitnecessarytochangethedefaultfirewallrulesoraddnewrules?Forprivateuse,youshouldnothavetoaddnewrulesorchangethedefaultrules.Bydefault,allincomingtrafficisblockedandalloutgoingtrafficisallowed.Ifyousetupavirtualserver,anadditionalincomingruleisautomaticallyaddedtoenableaccesstotheserverfromtheInternet.

AnexampleofanattackthatyourGlobeSurfer®IIwillautomaticallyblockisaDenialofService(DoS)attack.Thisisanattackwhereahackerchoosestofloodyournetworkwithmorerequeststhanitcanhandle.Whilethistypeofattackwouldnotharmcomputersinthenetwork,itcouldsloworevenstopnetworkoperations.Youdonotneedtosetupafirewallruleforthis.

6.6 IP- Hostname (url) Filtering
