Empowerment Project

Global Warming and the effects of the Kyoto Protocol

By Chija Bauer

GoalsGoals

1) To parameterize and calculate the economic ramifications for developing vs. developed countries of the proposed geo-political solutions to the anthropogenic contributions to global warming.

Goals Goals

2) The empowerment project will provide the students with an "ad-hoc" understanding of energy consumption and its geological effects on our environment as well as the economic ramifications to the individual in differing societies.

3) The project will (hopefully) empower the student to make his/her own conclusions to various aspects of social justice as it relates to the global warming debate.

Consider the following:Consider the following:

Al Gore consulted many scientific papers and many scientists before he made his film, “Inconvenient Truth.”

Should Mr. Gore be taken at his word?

Since this film concerns physical phenomena, does that mean that it is non-biased?

Consider the following:Consider the following:

Al Gore asked Ted Koppel on "Nightline" to find out any dirt he could on scientists who disagreed with him.

Does this change your perception of the film “Inconvenient Truth?” Why or why not.

One more:One more:One of the most profound benefits of being able to continue photographing Mars in the Mars Global Surveyor (MGS) Extended Mission is the opportunity to go back and re-image a site that was seen in the previous martian year. New MGS Mars Orbiter Camera (MOC) images have provided a startling observation: The residual martian south polar cap is changing. The fact that it is changing suggests that Mars may have major, global climate changes that are occurring on the same time scales as Earth's most recent climate shifts, including the last Ice Age.(from Malin Space Science Systems)

What could be causing these effects?

What does this imply about global warming on the earth?

The next stage in our project:

The next stage in our project:

The following steps assume Global warming is happening, and there is an anthropogenic cause. This part studies the physical effects of particular gasses and pollution on various countries.

Number crunching…Number crunching…

a.The students calculate the average British Thermal Units (BTU’s) per person at various stages in a developing nation’s economy.

b.The students calculate the amount of carbon dioxide generated per BTU at those stages.

c.Calculate the cost per person per unit CO2 produced under the terms of the proposed Kyoto agreement.

d.Compare the cost in developed verses underdeveloped countries.

I would like to encourage my students to write letters to the appropriate political figures either in favor, or critical, of the politician’s actions and the proposed geo-political solutions.

Last but not least:Last but not least:

To lighten things up a bit at the end of the project, we will watch excerpts from the film, “The Day After Tomorrow” and pick out the physical inaccuracies in the film.
