There is not enough time left , just 8 years to save the planet…

-Times of India, 8th May, 2007These are not prophesies by traditional monks

or saints but by IPCC ( Inter Governmental Panel on Climate Change)

Some Inconvenient Truths…

DIRECTOR – Suresh pachori (2007 novel prize winner [peace])

Page 4: Global Warming Presentation

Global warming is now “unequivocal” and that human activity “very likely” has been the primary cause of rising temperatures worldwide since 1950.

The report summary also says that global warming is likely to continue for centuries, and that it is already too late to stop some of the serious consequences it will bring—even if mankind could somehow hold the line on greenhouse gas emissions worldwide starting today

IPCC Report states ..

Earth’s temperature rise

GLOBAL

Continuous increase the temperature of the earth is called global warming

The gas traps heat more effectively than all other gasses are known as Green house gasses, occur naturally in the environment and also result from human activities. These gasses are

Water vaporCarbon dioxideMethaneNitrous oxideCFC

GREEN HOUSE GASSES

GLOBAL

Page 8: Global Warming Presentation

Water Vapour

Most abundant greenhouse gas which reaches the atmosphere through evaporation from ocean, lakes & rivers .

GLOBAL

WARMING

Page 9: Global Warming Presentation

Next most abundant green house gas that flows into atmosphere from many processes such as

By burning of fossil fuels, solid wastes & wood products, to drive vehicles, generate electricity, deforestation (huge cutting of trees)

Volcanic eruptions

Carbon dioxide

GLOBAL

Page 10: Global Warming Presentation

Burning carbon-containing fossil fuels produces carbon dioxide

GLOBAL

WARMING

Page 11: Global Warming Presentation

In the year 1750 about 281 molecules of CO2 per million molecule of air (ppm). Today it is about 368 ppm which reflects a increase of 31% in atmospheric CO2 concentration. if current predictions prove accurate, by the year 2100 , CO2 will reach concentrations of more than 970 ppm (this figure would be triple the levels prior to the industrial revolution).

CO2 Emissions to atmosphere

Page 12: Global Warming Presentation

Nitrous oxideA powerful insulating gas released primarily by burning fossil fuels . Nitrous oxide traps about 300 times more heat than does the same amount of CO2.

The concentration of Nitrous oxide in the atmosphere has increased 17% over pre-industrial levels.

GLOBAL

WARMING

Page 13: Global Warming Presentation

An effective insulator trapping over 20 times more heat than does the same amount of CO2 .

Since the beginning of the industrial revolution , the amount of methane in the atmosphere has more than doubled.

IMPACT OF GLOBAL WARMING

Page 15: Global Warming Presentation

• As per scientists’ prediction the warmed world will be more humid & hot which will result in more water evaporation from earth

• Humid weather will enhance rainfall but with change pattern & high intensity

• Storm will be more strong & frequent

• Weather pattern are suspected to be less predictable and more extreme

• Sea level world wide rose 10-20 cm in 20th century

• In 21st century IPCC predicts a rise of 9 to 88 cm .

• It will submerge 6% of Netherlands, 17.5% of Bangladesh and many Island will disappear.

(Lakshadweep, Andaman and nicobar, SL, Maldives etc.)

AGRICULTURE

•Increase in temperature may cause a pole-ward Shift of agricultural zones and shift in growing seasons.•Equatorial zones, where agriculture is generally unproductive now, will deteriorate further.•In many areas currently fertile, like parts of south America, New Zealand, and Southern Africa, condition are Predicted to become more arid and crop yields to become more marginal.

Page 23: Global Warming Presentation

• A hell of a lot of species are in big trouble

• Animal and plants will find it difficult to escape from or adjust to effect of warming because of less availability of space already occupied by human populace.

ANIMAL

•Approximately 20-30% of plant and animal Species assessed so far are likely to be at greater risk of extinction if increases in global Average temperature exceed 1.5 to 2.5 Celsius.

GLOBAL

WARMING

Page 24: Global Warming Presentation

More than 3000 flying foxes dropped dead, falling from trees in Australia.

ANIMAL

GLOBAL

WARMING

Most plants and animals are affected , and the change is occurring too quickly for them to evolve.

“There is no doubt in my mind that climate change is one of the greatest threats facing humanity today.”

Page 25: Global Warming Presentation

•As per IPCC more people will get sick or die from heat stress due to warmer nights

•Today 45% of world population is affected by mosquito carrying parasites. The percentage may increase to 60 if temperature rise rate remains same till 2030. Other diseases e.g. dengue fever, yellow fever and encephalitis will increase rapidly

•Allergies & respiratory disease grow as warmer air grows as it will be more charged with pollutant

What can I doas an individual?

GLOBAL

Page 36: Global Warming Presentation

• whenever you can, recycle paper, plastic, newspaper, glass and aluminum cans. • By recycling half of your household waste, you can save 2,400 pounds of carbon dioxide annually.

GLOBAL

WARMING

Reuse & Recycle

Page 37: Global Warming Presentation

Setting your thermostat just 2 degrees lower in winter and higher in summer could save about 2,000 pounds of carbon dioxide each year.

Use Less Heat and Air Conditioning

GLOBAL

WARMING

Page 38: Global Warming Presentation

CFLs last 10 times longer than regular bulbs, use two-thirds less energy, and give off 70 percent less heat.

If every family in India replaces one regular light bulb with a CFL, it would eliminate 900 billion pounds of greenhouse gases, the same as taking 27.5 million cars off the road.

Change a Light Bulb

GLOBAL

Page 39: Global Warming Presentation

Less driving means fewer emissions.

When you do drive, make sure your car is running efficiently

Every gallon of gas you save not only helps your budget, it also keeps 20 pounds of carbon dioxide out of the environment .

Drive Less and Drive Smart

Home appliances now come in a range of energy-efficient products

Avoid products that come with excess packaging, especially molded plastic and other packaging that can't be recycled. If you reduce your household garbage by 10 percent, you can save 1,200 pounds of carbon dioxide annually.

Plant a Tree

GLOBAL

WARMING

If you have the means to plant a tree, start digging.. They are there to fully counter the increases in carbon dioxide caused by automobile traffic, manufacturing and other human activities. A single tree will absorb approximately one ton of carbon dioxide during its lifetime.

Page 42: Global Warming Presentation

Save electricity and reduce global warming by turning off lights when you leave a room, and using only as much light as you need.

And remember to turn off your television, video player, stereo and computer when you're not using them.

Use the "Off" Switch
