-OUR EARTH NEEDS US

Page 2: Global warming

Definition  Global warming usually means a fast,

unnatural increase in overall temperature of earth that is enough to cause the expected climate conditions to change rapidly.

Greenhouse Effect

Page 4: Global warming

Causes for Global WarmingRise in CO2 emission.Rise in other green house gases, like methane,

Water vapor.Deforestation- burning and cutting millions of acres of

trees each year, it is responsible for 20-25 per cent of all carbon emissions.

Energy use and production- More than 80% of the world-wide energy demand is currently supplied by the fossil fuels coal, oil or gas.

The true cause of global warming is our thoughtless attitude towords Nature.

Relation between Temperature and CO2

Today's 370 parts per million of CO2 is the greatest in 20 million years -- and it is still going up.

A Pentagan Report points to possible "catastrophic droughts, famines and riots, with skirmishes over food and water, mass migration and economic disruption. Starvation and disease will decrease population size".The Stern Report says "climate change will affect the basic elements of life (water, food production, health and the environment). Hundreds of millions of people could be affected by coastal flooding".

Impact of Global WarmingIce Under Fire: Arctic40% REDUCED IN 40

YEARSNEXT 30 YEARS IT WILL

BE COMPLETELY GONE IN SUMMER TIME.

Page 10: Global warming

First, it will raise sea levels.Second, Ice caps are white, and reflect sunlight,

much of which is reflected back into space, further cooling Earth.

Third, melting ice caps will throw the global ecosystem out of balance. The ice caps are fresh water, and when they melt they will desalinate the ocean, or in plain English - make it less salty.

Fourth, temperature rises and changing landscapes in the arctic circle will endanger several species of animals. Only the most adaptable will survive.

ANTARCTICA- LARGEST ICE SHELVES IN THE WORLD.

About 98% of Antarctica is covered by ice, which averages at least 1.6 kilometres (1.0 mi) in thickness.

PermafrostPermafrost is a solid structure of frozen soil, extending to depths of 2.200 feet in some areas of the arctic and subarctic regions,  containing grasses, roots, sticks, much of it dating back to 30,000 years.

The Larsen B sector collapsed and broke up, 3,250 km² of ice 220 m thick disintegrated in just 35 DAYS. "hotspot of global warming."

GREENLAND MELTING

The rate of ice-mass loss from an island in Greenland increased by 250 percent during a period spanning May 2004 to April 2006 relative to the period from April 2002 to April 2004,a study concludes.

IF ENTIRE GREENLAND OR WEST ANTARCTICA MELTS SEA LEVEL RISE 20 FEET Worldwide!

Warming Winds, Rising Tides: OceansCoral reefs are probably

the most complex ecosystems on the planet, home to hundreds of thousands of species.

High water temperatures caused coral bleaching and subsequent death or adverse change to sixteen percent of world reefs overall and up to 46 percent in parts of the Indian Ocean.

Pushing the Boundaries of Life: Temperate Zone "We are running into a

really serious loss of biodiversity."

2/3 of butterfly species with long observational records had shifted northward by from 22 to 150 miles, consistent with temperature increases in Europe.

SOLUTIONS The Most Important Things You Can Do about

Rapid Climate Change:1. Understand the Problem, its causes

2. Do Something Today to Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions, find solutions.

Its time to ACT. "In my view, climate change is the most severe

problem that we are facing today -- more serious even than the threat of terrorism."
