• Most greenhouses look like small glasshouses.

• Green houses are used to grow plants, especially in the winter.

Greenhouses work?

• Greenhouses work by trapping heat from the sun.

• The glass panels of the greenhouse let in light but keep heat from escaping.

Greenhouse EffectThe greenhouse effect is a process by which radiative energy

leaving a planetary surface is absorbed by some atmospheric gases, called greenhouse gases.

Earth’s atmosphere is slightly warmer than what it should be due to direct solar heating because of a mild case of greenhouse effect…– The ground is heated by visible and (some) infrared light

from the Sun. – The heated surface emits infrared light. – The majority of Earth’s atmosphere (N2 and O2) are not

good greenhouse gas.– The small amount of greenhouse gases (H2O, CO2) traps

(absorb and re-emit) the infrared radiation, increasing the temperature of the atmosphere…

Cause of Greenhouse effect

The greenhouse effect is caused by gases in the atmosphere which have the ability to absorb the sun's energy that is usually radiated back into space from Earth. Energy from the sun comes into the earth as short-wave radiation; some is absorbed and some is radiated back as long-wave radiation.

The greenhouse gases are: Water Vapour Carbon dioxide Nitrous Oxide Methane CFCs

Advantage and Disadvantage of GHE

• Without the greenhouse effect, the Earth would not be warm enough for humans to live.

• But if the greenhouse effect becomes stronger, it could make the Earth warmer than usual.

• Even a little warming causes problems for plants and animals.

Global warming and climate change

Global warming refers to the increase in the temperature of the Earth's atmosphere. This results in the increase of our global average temperature. The greenhouse effect causes an accumulation of heat (or energy) in the Earth's atmosphere. The global climate must then adjust to deal with that extra accumulation of energy, and these adjustments result in global warming and climate changes.

Page 9: Global warming

Global warming and climate change result from thegreenhouse effect. The consequences of global warming

and climate change could well include:

• the eradication of entire ecosystems • increased frequency and intensity of storms,

hurricanes, floods and droughts • melting glaciers and polar ice • rising sea levels resulting in the permanent flooding of

vast areas of heavily • increased frequency of forest fires • spread of tropical diseases due to insect proliferation

Ways we can help make our planet better to live

• Produce more fuel-efficient vehicles

• Reduce vehicle use

• Improve energy-efficiency in buildings

• Develop carbon capture and storage processes

• Triple nuclear power

• Increase solar power

• Decrease deforestation/plant forests• Improve soil carbon management strategies

My solution

I think that we should slowly wean ourselves off of all types of inefficient energy sources and make an honest attempt to preserves as much of our planet’s rainforest’s and other natural parts of the Earth. As well as taking little steps to energy efficiency like hybrids, energy efficient appliances, and using solar and wind energy.

Conclusion

The purpose of this assignment is to examine the climatic changes caused by increased carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and their implications for society. Also discussed will be the mechanisms of the greenhouse effect, the sources and reservoirs of carbon dioxide, and some possible methods to reduce the magnitude of the problem. Note, however, that the most we can do at this point is lessen the severity of the situation. That the mean global temperature will increase in the next few decades is certain.
