Global Vipassan!: A Bibliography on Vipassan!Studies

    Therav!da Vipassan!

The purpose of this article is to provide a bibliographical resource for general knowledge,

teaching and research purpose on vipassan!studies and Therav!da meditation. The centrality of

Therav!da spiritual practice is the vipassan! bh!van! or the insight meditation. Vipassan!

bh!van! is one of the ancient Indian Buddhist meditations (Winston King, 1980; Alexander

Wynne 2007; Sarah Shaw, 2006). The P!li canonical and post-canonical literatures of

Therav!da describe that the Buddha attained his supreme enlightenment through the applied

    vipassan!bh!van!.

Vipassan! is preserved and developed by Therav!da Buddhist meditative tradition and

practiced in South and Southeast Asia (Jack Kornfield, 1988/2012) and Therav!da diaspora in

the West (Windy Cadge, 2002) and global spiritualist community alike. Since the early

twentieth century Vipassan!-renascence in the form of insight meditation in Burma/Myanmar

Vipassan!became cross or/transnational form of meditation. While maintaining integrity of the

tradition, traditional Vipassan!went innovation, transformation, and popularization in the Westby contemporary Vipassan! movements notably by insight meditation teachers of Therav!da

Buddhist tradition Jack Kornfield, Joseph Goldstein, Sharon Salzberg, Tara Brach, Gil

Fronsdal, Ajahn Brahmavamso and Ruth Denison. The Insight Meditation Society (IMS) in

Barre, Massachusetts, the Spirit Rock Meditation Center, California, and Bh!van! Society in

West Virginia are the three major institutions of globalized Vipassan!in America. It has now

arrived in Estonia, Latvia and in other Baltic countries and in other places in Eastern Europe

    and Russia.

As the traditional Vipassan! has integrated into modern Vipassan!, many

psychotherapists, psychoanalysists, neuroscientist and clinicians used Vipassan! and

mindfulness practices in their various psychological treatments, humanistic psychology, and

    personal-therapy (e.g. Kabat-Zinns Mindfulness-based Stress Reduction, Dialectical

Behavioral Therapy and Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy) (Christopher Germer, Ronald

    Siegel, and Paul Fulton, 2008).

Satya Narayan Goenka popularly known as S.N. Guenka is the leading figure among

many modern Vipassan!teachers. The teaching of Vipassan!by Guenka is categorically known

as Guenka-Vipassan!and his centres are found in around the world including in Iran. Given a

strict prohibition against non-Islamic teaching, Goenka-Vipassan!is only Buddhist spirituality

that has reached in the Middle East and other Islamic countries. Goenka has not only

transformed traditional Vipassan! into more acceptable, approachable and practicable

meditation for the larger audience, but also, through the empowerment of applied Vipassan!, he

has created an awakening Buddhist society.1Today, Goenka-Vipassan! is taught in various

prisons in Asia and North America (see the documentaries: doing time, doing vipassana,

karunafilms and dhammabrothers, dhammabrothers) to transform prisoners violent behaviors

and to create compassionate community. Indeed, since modern Vipassan! movements in the

West, Vipassan!has been central to research in psychology, therapy and neuroscience.

Beside scholarly works and researches on what one may call Vipassan! studies, the

article surveys Vipassan!and insight meditation centers around the world, including those of

Therav!da temples and monasteries in the West where Vipassan! is taught and practiced by

Therav!da diaspora. Large numbers of Therav!da diaspora and Therav!da immigrants Buddhist

in the United States of America, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, France,Germany, Norway, Finland, and Sweden. When they migrated, located and relocated in

different cities, they established translocal temples and monasteries for strengthening and

continuity of spiritual dimension. These temples and monasteries offer and teach Vipassan!

meditation on weekly and monthly basis for Burmese diaspora and people who are interested in

    meditation and Buddhist spirituality.
