GLOBAL HAZARDS

An introduction to hazards & disasters

Page 2: GLOBAL HAZARDS An introduction to hazards & disasters

Objective

• To understand what Hazards and disasters are.

• To distinguish the various natural hazards and how it affects the people throughout the world.

On your whiteboards…

• How many natural hazards can you think of?

• You have 5 minutes to fill your board with facts about a recent natural

disaster (internet research)

Hazards & Disasters • A natural hazard is a natural event with a potential

to harm people and their property.– Types of natural hazards:

• Volcanoes, floods, earthquakes, tornadoes, tsunamis, etc.– can act adversely on human processes– can occur:

• without warning (e.g. earthquakes)• with warnings (precursors) (e.g. satellite monitoring of cyclone

tracks, or the presence of ground deformation at a volcano before an eruption)

• A natural disaster is the realisation and impacts of natural hazards (i.e. the deaths, injuries, disruption and damages).

Classifying Natural Hazards

• Natural hazards can be classified by physical process.• Hydro-meteorological hazards result from weather systems.• Geophysical hazards result from tectonic process.• Some hazards are termed context hazards because they have the potential to

affect the entire planet.• Global warming is an example of a context hazard.

We will mainly study Tectonic Hazards.

We will study:

•The nature, causes and effects of earthquake and volcanic activities.

• The link between earthquake, volcanoes and Plate Boundaries.

• Where volcanoes are found in the world and where do earthquakes normally occur.

• How humans are affected and respond to Tectonic hazards.

Task

• For each of the following images, decide where you think the natural disaster occurred and what the natural hazard was.
