THE LANCASTER CAMPUS LAND DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE

Xristos Anesti!

Shortly after Pascha, construction at the Lancaster Campus began again. The details below reflect the situation on the ground asof April 20, 2017.

At this point, and for the next 45 days, the sub-contractors will be working on Metal Roofing, EFFIS/stone exterior, HVAC, Sitework, Sprinklers, and Security.

These areas of construction have started but will NOT be completed with the funds currently available. We plan to expend $176,500for the above work which will leave us with a total of $123,500.

As you can see, the funds are being exhausted rapidly and unless there is a major influx of donations, work will be halted soon andwe will not be able to bring the site to a state of being “usable” this for summer.

The LDC has launched a 50 for 5,000 campaign (see flyer on page 11). We will be asking 50 parishioners to donate $5,000 eachwithin the immediate future.

We are also organizing an exclusive Site Tour for theparishioners who have donated thus far. We have askedeach donor to bring an additional guest with them to“Come and See” what their donations have achieved! Thisshould be an exciting and transformative event!

We are working on potential grant support from variousGreek-American foundations. However, this is somethingthat may or may not materialize. We, the parishioners ofthe Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, are responsi-ble to bring this dream to fruition and give new life and fu-ture to our Parish.

This project WILL be completed, however, how long itwill take depends solely on us. We have an opportunity tomake the Family Life Center and the Chapel available toour GOYANs and our Greek School students within lessthan a year! This can only be achieved if we embrace the

concept of sacrificial giving and stretch ourselvesa little bit. Unfortunately, too many of our chil-dren over the past 15 years have grown up andmoved on with their lives without reaping thebenefits of this project.

We are now within grasp of seeing this beau-tiful project completed. Let us all come togetherso we can rejoice and celebrate that glorious mo-ment when the Aghiasmo is performed on theChapel and the Family Life Center! Please helpus and give generously!

May God bless you and your family with anabundence of good health and much joy as wecontinue to celebrate the Resurrection of ourLord and Savior Jesus Christ!

YOUTH CHOIRJuliana Schlabig, Director

As the Sunday school year is coming to a close, I would like to thank allof the Sunday Schoolers who have joined us in singing the Divine Liturgyon the first Sunday of each month, along with the parents of these childrenfor bringing them to church! Since the beginning of the year, the youth choirhas grown so much; both in the number of participants as well as thestrength of their voices. The past two years as youth choir director have beenextremely rewarding to me. At first, it was a challenge, as I am more of a vi-olinist than a vocalist; however, with the dedication of the kids and the prepa-ration and immense help of Lea Cervi, we have been able to successfully singthe Liturgy once a month on our parish’s “Youth Sundays.” As I will be leav-ing for school in Boston this fall, I will be passing the torch to my cousin,Niki Tshulos, with great honor. I encourage all of the youth to come join usin the front pews and participate in youth choir next school year!

“Share your bread with the hungry and bring the homeless and poor into your house.” Isaiah 58:7

Christos Anesti! Alithos Anesti! Christ has Risen! Truly He has Risen!

Let the joy of Christ’s Resurrection remain in our hearts long after Pascha.

As many of you may know, we have not had a soup kitchen since March 11th due to this busy time of year in or church. Our nextone will resume on Saturday, April 29th.

Our 2nd annual Lenten sock drive was a success, collecting 150 pairs of socks! Thank you to all who donated. Our community’sneeds are ever- growing. Since our Orthodox Action Soup Kitchen’s inception, we have seen a steady increase in the number of guestsattending. We are always welcoming volunteers, monetary donations, and desserts. We have a great crew of people involved here andwe do have a lot of fun! I think that’s evident with our guests’ comments about how they feel special here like “true” guests. (I thinkJohn Spanos’ and Paul Rosowicz’s delicious cooking is a huge part of it too!) I understand the challenges we all have trying to jugglework, school and home. If you want to volunteer “as you are able” rather than commit to a regular schedule, that would be welcomed. Please consider giving us a try! Meanwhile, enjoy the warmer weather and sunnier days that are approaching!

Come, enjoy our displays and browse. Our library staff is hereto help you find specific books.

Add a review - share your thoughts with other readers. This month’s review is dedicated to all mothers:

The Ascetic Lives of Mothers by Annalisa Boyd

What its about: Motherhood and its challenges, joys and thepotential for spiritual growth . The author offers a wide selectionof prayers mothers can use to intercede for their families as wellas to grow in virtue themselves.

Why its notable: this book speaks to somany of the situations we deal with in our dailylives.

Excerpt: “I heard it said once that mother-hood is a type of asceticism. Like the ascetics, mothers find themselves in a situation that re-quires their utter devotion, self denial , dailyemotional exercises facing extreme challengesand much prayer.”

Additional inspirational books:

•Visiting Mom - An inspiring narrative asseen through the eyes of a caregiver and hermother who has Alzheimer’s disease.

• Silent as a Stone- Memorializes the life of Mother MariaSkobtsova who aided the persecuted Jewish people in occupiedFrance during World War II.

• Keeping the Light Burning – Daily Reflection from Paschato Pentecos - by Rev. Aristotle Damaskos. This little book will helpus keep the light of the Risen Christ continuously ablaze.

• Seasons of Grace: Reflections on the Church Year - A col-lection of thoughtful reflections written in an insightful and some-times humorous style to help weave together the great feasts intothe fabric of our lives.

ADULT CHOIR Linda Mucyn, Director

This has gone from a call to all singers for your help to a plea to all singers. We desperately need your help if you would like to see theadult choir continue at Annunciation. We are down to critical numbers and would appreciate any and all help you can muster.

We will continue our transition to a largely a cappella choir and hopefully avoid situations such as April 23 where we couldn’t sing sincewe didn’t have an organist. we would like to take this opportunity to welcome all who are singers or have sung in the past to join us.

If you have sung with the children’s choir and consider yourself to have outgrown it, we welcome you to the adult choir! Young adults, especially high school students, are the future of the adult choir.

Our rehearsals for May will be as indicated in the Sunday Bulletin or via email. Please feel free to join us! If there is a question aboutrehearsal, please contact me directly at [email protected] or 912-6343. I do accept text messages!

LIVING WATER

Evagrios Ponticos (i.e. from Pontos on the Black Sea coast of Asia Minor) was a monastic author of the Church who lived about345 to 399. He was educated in both philosophy and theology under St. Basil and St. Gregory of Nazianzus (the Theologian). Heserved as a deacon under St. Gregory in Constantinople. Later, he moved to Jerusalem where he was tonsured a monk. From there,Evagrius retired to the deserts of Egypt, where he became a disciple to the two Macariuses, living first for two years in Nitria and thenin the Kellia until his death about fourteen years later. He was one of the first of the desert fathers to write on the wisdom of theDesert Fathers and the traditions of the monastic movement.

What follows are excerpts from his treatise “Pros monachon” (“To a monk”). The whole work has 137 entries; only some will bepresented this time.

1. Heirs of God, listen to the reasons of God.Co-heirs of Christ, receive the sayings of Christ,so that you can give them to the hearts of your children, and teach them the words of the wise.

2. A good father trains his sons; an evil father will ruin them.

3. Faith: the beginning of love. The end of love: knowledge of God.

4. Fear of the Lord guards the soul.Good temperance strengthens it.

5. The perseverance of a man gives birth to hope;good hope will glorify him.

6. The one who enslaves his flesh, passionless shall he be;the one who feeds it, by it will he be pained.

7. A spirit of sexual impurity is in the bodies of the intemperate, but a spirit of chastity is in the souls of the temperate.

8. Anachoresis* in love purifies the heart;anachoresis in hate agitates it. *(Anachoresis: to leave the world, to become an anchorite)

9. Better the thousandth in lovethan one alone with hate in inaccessible caves.

10. The one who binds memory of injury to his soulis like to one hiding fire in chaff.

11. Do not give much food to your bodyand you will not see bad visions in your sleep. For in the way that a flame enkindles a forestSo does hunger burn up shameful visions.

12. An irascible man will be terrified;the gentle man will be without fear.

13. A strong wind chases away clouds;memory of injury chases the mind from knowledge.

14. He who prays for his enemies will be forgetful of injurieshe who spares his tongue will not sadden his neighbor.

15. If your brother irritates you, lead him into your house, and do not hesitate to go into his, but eat your morsel with him.For doing this, you will deliver your soulAnd there will be no stumbling block for you at the hour of Prayer.

16. Just as love rejoices in poverty,so hate is pleased by wealth.

17. The rich man will not acquire knowledgeand the same will not enter through the eye of a needle, yet none of these things will be impossible with the Lord.

18. He who loves money will not see knowledge, and he who amasses it will become dark in himself.

19. In the tents of the humble the Lord will make camp, but in the houses of the proud, curses will abound.

20. The one who transgresses God's law dishonors him,but he who keeps it glorifies the one who made him.

21. Woe to a lawless man on the day of his death. The unjust man will perish at an evil hour. For as a crow flies away from its nest,So does the unclean soul from its own body.

22. If you imitate Christ, you will become blessed.Your soul will die His death,And it will not derive evil from its flesh.Instead, your exodus will be like the exodus of a star, and your resurrection will glow like the sun.
