What you may not know, unlike most of the world, the unique thing about Macedonia is that Christmas Eve is on the 6th of January and Christmas Day is on the 7th of January. This is because the Macedonian Orthodox Church follows the Julian calendar, which is 14 days behind. Come join Anya, as she shares her heritage and traditions of Christmas with all of you. “Dia de los muertos”, which in English means Day of the Dead, or in the Catholic Church means, “All Saint’s Day”. It is a holiday that is celebrated throughout Mexico and Latin America. The two-day holiday focuses on the remembrance of friends and family who have passed and help support their spiritual journey. Edith is going to take you through the traditional celebration of, “Dia de los muertos”, to help you understand this famous Hispanic cultural celebration.

Kumihimo Finger Braiding

Kumihimo (Koo-Me-He-Mo) is a type of wearable bracelet, made by finger braiding. It has been around for 1500 years. These beautiful braids were once used to protect against bad luck and evil ghosts, but now are used as a form of meditation, bracelets and in kimono dress. In this course with Manda, not only will you create a traditional piece of Japanese art, but you will also take it home for everyone to enjoy.

Faculty Biography

Gina Alessi I am the Community Life Director at the Fountains. I have been here since August of 1999 and think of the Residents as part of my family. I believe that Watermark University is a fun way for Residents, and also the commu-nity, to engage in new ways to keep their minds and bodies active.

Reggie Andrews I have two kids and one granddaughter. I enjoy arts and crafts, volunteer-ing, traveling and reading. I am honored and thrilled to be part of this great learning experience. For many years, I owned and operated a Pottery Shop and I can’t wait to share my love of art with all of you.

Pat Barnes I was raised in Cary and graduated from Cary-Grove High School. My hus-band and I have 4 children and 10 grandchildren. I have always enjoyed crafts and I am a watercolor artist. I took classes at MCC and continue to do so at The Dole. I have volunteered at the Fountains doing card making for many years. I enjoy meeting the people who come to participate. It’s fun for all of us.

Sophia Borys I lived most of my life in Michigan, with 8 siblings. My family had a farm and with no father around, my mom and all the kids worked very hard to sup-port one another. I learned gardening, crocheting and crafts from my mom. I like to stay active and enjoy socializing and helping others. I am honored to lead the Crochet Club and continue to make Billie’s vision live on. Please join me this semester!

Judy Brown I became certified as a group fitness aerobics instructor in 2003 and I taught a Latin Rhythm class for four years. In 2007 I became certified in Zumba Basic and then went on and received my Zumba Gold certification in March of 2008. I have been teaching Zumba four times a week for several years. I have also been certified in Zumba Basic II and Zumba Toning.

Sandi Buerger I have worked at the Fountains since 1999. As the Business Office Manager, I love interacting with the Residents and their families. I’m looking forward to sharing a fun class with you!

Tracy Clauser I became the Health and Wellness Director here at the Fountains in 2012. I received my nursing degree from Harper College. I am married and have 3 wonderful children. I can’t wait to share my knowledge of ways to improve your health!

Lori Cole I have been part of the Fountains family since 2008. I work in the Market-ing Department. I have always enjoyed Arts & Crafts and even owned a pottery studio for many years. I can’t wait to share some of my knowledge with you.

Daile Coyle I was born and raised in California. I loved raising my two sons here in Illinois! I have worked at the Fountains since 2009 and consider this my second home. I love the quality time I get to spend with the Residents through Watermark University!

Mark Curran Hi, my name is Mark. I was born in Belvidere, IL in 1974. I have worked for the Fountains Maintenance Department since 2006. I always enjoy a good card game with family and friends and look forward to sharing this fun hobby with all of you!

Manda Fischer I live in Harvard and I have two wonderful sons. I have been working at the Fountains since 1997. I like coming to work and seeing all of the wonderful smiles that warm my heart. I can’t wait to work with you this semester!

Noel Fischer I have been at the Fountains since 2000 and I am currently the Housekeep-ing Supervisor. I was born and raised in Woodstock and keep close ties with my family. While growing up as a family, we always enjoyed spending fam-ily nights playing cards and board games. I can’t wait to share my family’s traditions with you through Watermark University!

Lynn Fredette I live in Crystal Lake and have two daughters, Nicole and Kellie. My experi-ence with Senior Services goes back since I was 15 years old. I received my RN degree from Illinois State. This semester, I’m looking forward to sharing some great health tips with all of you!

Rebecca Fries I’m Becky, an Occupational Therapist for Bowes In Home Care since 2012. I graduated in 2003 from Missouri State University majoring in Gerontol-ogy and received my Masters degree in Occupational Therapy in 2007. As a therapist, I am focused on increasing an individual’s independence with self-cares, increasing strength, decreasing pain and improving overall mo-bility within an individual’s home and out in the community. I am look-ing forward to meeting everyone and offering my skills as an Occupational Therapist. Please come on by and say hello.

June Guice I have been a CNA at the Fountains since 2014. I’m originally from California and moved to Illinois in 1997. I’ve had an interest in the Bible since childhood, that has led me to study it and share what I’ve learned with others. In the past, I’ve taught the Bible to people one-on-one, so I’m excited about this opportunity to share its practical lessons in a group setting.

Terry Hauck Hi, I’m Terry! I have been a part-time bus driver since 2013. I was born and raised in Fox River Grove. Besides driving a bus here, I’m also a bus driver for the Palatine School District. I am married and have 6 children, 4 grand-children and I can’t forget my furry pal, Rocky. I enjoy traveling and playing golf in my spare time.

Paula Hauck I am with the Marketing Team at the Fountains at Crystal Lake. This is “my home away from home” and I am excited about Watermark University and how much all of us are going to learn and thrive from joining in. I have two awesome boys, Tyler and Brent. When I am not reading, you might catch me throwing a baseball or football with Tyler or listening to a new song Brent is playing on his guitar. So join us and have some fun!

Shannon Humphrey Hi, I’m Shannon and I have been here at the Fountains since March, 2013, as a CNA in the Gardens. I love working with the Residents and bringing a smile to their faces every day. In my spare time, I love to cook and bake and I’m thrilled to share that passion with all of you!

Michael Gamache I joined the Fountains at Crystal Lake in July, 2008. My grandparents sparked my interest in birding on our Centennial Michigan Farm. My birding inter-est continues to grow as I vacation in the forests of upper Michigan and the western mountain states. I enjoy spending time outdoors and being anywhere that wildlife lives.

Erika Johnson Hi there! My name is Erika. I was born in Monterrey Nuevo Leon, Mexico. I have been part of the Fountains since 1995. I truly enjoy working here and hope to share with you a little taste of Mexican Cuisine.

Edith Krogstie For many years it has been a family tradition to play games with my 6 wonderful children. I believe that family always comes first. I enjoy helping others, that is why I have been a volunteer for over 75 years. The Fountains has been my home since 2010 and I enjoy living here. This semester join me as I teach you the tricks and rules of canasta!

I’m a Registered Dietitian, Licensed Dietitian/Nutritionist and an active member of the American Dietetic Association. My goals are to utilize my expertise and passion in the field of health and nutritional wellness to make a positive impact on the lives of others.

Natalie Mallek I’ve been the Chef here at the Fountains since 2002. In 1997, my lifelong love of cooking drove me to attend Bossier Parish College, where I received my degree in Hospitality Management and Culinary Arts and graduated 1st in my class.

Dave Mehner I’ve been a Personal Trainer now for many years. My program is designed to work all the muscles in the body from head to toe. It also helps with cognitive and fine motor skills. If you have ever had any life threatening ailments such as a stroke or Parkinson’s disease, it can aid in restoring muscle movement.

Sue Menolasino I have been a volunteer at the Fountains since 2007. I have always loved volunteering ever since I was a child. I used to visit nursing homes with my Father. I went to Grand Rapids School of Bible and Music in Michigan, where I majored in Music. I play the piano and the organ. I love to share the Gospel of God through my music and I’m looking forward to sharing it with all of you!

Patty Mills I have been the Human Resource Director at the Fountains at Crystal Lake since January 2002. I share a love of reading, knitting, crocheting and spending time with my husband and 4 wonderful children. I’m looking forward to sharing some of my passions with all of you.

Anya Naumovski I currently go to Prairie Ridge High School in Crystal Lake. I started at the Fountains in 2014 and love meeting new people. I also love art, crafting, cooking and baking. In my spare time, I like listening to music, hanging out with friends and, of course, trying new things. I have taken an interest in photography. In the future, I hope to go into early childhood education or nursing.

Ekta Parmar My name is Ekta Parmar and I am the Events Coordinator for In Home Personal Services, since 2015. I grew up in India and moved to the United States when I was 12 years old. I received my Master’s degree in Health Sciences, from DePaul University, in Chicago. I love going to the movies and I am looking forward to having fun with all of you, each month.

Ellen Pitstick I lived in Moline, IL for over 50 years. My husband Jack and I raised 2 daughters there, Donna and Sharon. I lost my husband to cancer in 1993. While in Moline, I was a volunteer at Pathway Hospice and the American Cancer Society for 23 years. I moved to the Fountains in fall of 2009. I have 4 granddaughters and 1 grandson. I look forward to sharing my interests with all my family here at the Fountains!

Sarah Papic I have been playing the violin since I was 8 years old. To me music is more than sounds, it is the heartbeat and beauty of life. I inherit my passion for music from my mother and grandmother. Aside from music, I’m also a beautician. I can’t wait to get this semester started with the melodies of the violin.

Tricia Paramore I join the Fountains team in 2011 and love working with seniors. I’m currently a student at UIC. I’m a huge animal lover and I enjoy reaching out to the community by fostering dogs and cats. In my free time I love to bake and cook and can’t wait to share that passion with all of you!

Ashley Peterson I started here at the Fountains in January of 2014. I work in the Housekeeping Department and enjoy meeting and talking with all of the Residents. Some of my hobbies include being outdoors, crafts, styling hair and playing cards. See you this semester!

Joe Pusic I was born and raised in Northern Croatia, in a city called Karlovac. I have been part of the Fountains family since 2002 as the Dining Room Manager. I truly enjoy my time working here and getting to know the Residents.

Richard Quick I have been volunteering here at the Fountains for a number of years. I served our country proudly for almost 22 years, until I retired as a Senior NCO in the army. When I started coming to the Fountains, I found that there was a need for the “Greatest Generation” to be able to maintain the camaraderie they had with the ones with which they served. I’m currently a Community Chaplain. I have a special passion for helping people understand the Bible.

I have been volunteering here at the Fountains for a number of years. I served our country proudly for almost 22 years, until I retired as a Senior NCO in the army. When I started coming to the Fountains, I found that there was a need for the “Greatest Generation” to be able to maintain the camaraderie they had with the ones with which they served. Judy Romo Hi! I’m Judy and I work in the Marketing Department as a Sales Associate. I started here at the Fountains in 2014 and I thoroughly enjoy being around the Residents. I have been in this field for more than 10 years. I am married and have 3 wonderful sons and 7 grandchildren. In my spare time, I enjoy reading, walking and playing Candy Crush on the computer.

Robert Schwarz I have been presenting professional, multi-media travelogues and documentary programs at the Fountains since 2001. I am a retired newspaper editor and workshop facilitator and believe in the combined value of entertainment and education, as well as tailoring programs to the needs and interests of this particular audience.

Elaine Shaw I was so honored to be part of this great opportunity! Besides being a retired teacher, I also have had two books published! I currently teach a class at MCC called, “Writer Wannabees”. I am so excited to bring my love of writing to the Fountains! I can’t wait to help you put all your great memories onto paper!

Nancy Shelton I was born and raised in Cleveland Ohio, but have resided in Crystal Lake since the early 60’s. I Have 3 children, 4 grandchildren and 2 great grand-children. I was a Welcome Wagon Hostess for 25 years and I love to get everyone out and active. I love stamping, cards and games. I look forward to playing cards with you this semester!

Deb Smith I was born in Illinois and have called Carpentersville my home since I was 10. I started working at the Fountains in May of 2016 and I really enjoy working with the Residents and staff! I love going to church, reading, scrapbooking and listening to music! I have 5 kids and 6 grandchildren. I am looking forward to seeing all of you this semester!

Sam Sutalski I have worked at the Fountains since August, 2012 and love every day of it! I’m part of the Community Life team and work in the Gardens. I love to bake and can’t wait to share some of my passion with all of you!

Krys Van Alstyne Hi, I’m Krys Van Alstyne and I am our Move-In Coordinator, here at the Fountains. I am originally from Wisconsin, but have been living in Island Lake, with my husband, John, and our 3 wonderful children, since the late 90’s. I am also happy to have the opportunity to work in a wonderful community where even my mom, Lizzy lives. I enjoy spending time with my family, crafting, and cheering on the Green Bay Packers.

Margaret Volpe I was born in Chicago and raised in Palatine. I am a retired Day Care/ Elementary School Teacher. I was a Foster Parent for many years, as well as a host for Foreign Exchange Students. Denise Yager I am currently a member of the Yoga Faculty at Healthbridge, a local health club, and have been teaching at the Fountains for several years. During my class, I will guide you through gentle poses from the chair. With these movements, your body will relax along with your mind.

Kim Zack I live in Cary, Illinois and have one grown son. I have been volunteer-ing at Retirement Communities since 2004. I serve in this ministry with Sue Menolasino. She and I started making music together back in 2000. I attend Harvest Bible Chapel in Crystal Lake. Sue and I serve in this ministry because it is our heart’s desire for all to know the depth of God’s love for them. No one is ever too old to begin a relationship with Christ. We can’t wait to see you this Semester!

Liz Zermeno I was born and raised in the beautiful city of Chicago until the age of 15, when we moved to McHenry. I started at the Fountains in April, 2011, in the Community Life Department, as an activity aide. What I enjoy most about my job is that everyday is a learning experience for me.
