Project Needs & Notes

Open the dieline files withembroidery software and printthem.

If you do not have embroiderysoftware, Wilcom's TrueSizer is a free program to use.

Cut out the shapes.

Spray a piece of medium-weightcutaway stabilizer with temporaryadhesive.

Place the fabric on top. Thisexample uses craft felt.

Place the dieline for the front ofthe holder on top of the felt andstabilizer combination.

Cut out the shape for the frontfabric piece.

Next, cut the fabric for the insideof the gift card holder. In thisexample, quilter's cotton is used.

Place the dieline for the front ontop of the cotton, and cut out theshape.

Finally, prepare the fabric for theback of the gift card holder.

Quilter's cotton is used again.

Spray the wrong side of thecotton with temporary adhesive.

Fold the fabric in half.

Place the dieline for the back ofthe gift card holder on the fabric.

Align the straight edge of thedieline with the folded edge of thefabric.

Cut out the shape.

Now that the fabric pieces are cutto the proper shape and size, it'stime to embroider the design.

Hoop a piece of tear-awaystabilizer.

Use a size 11 sharp sewingneedle in the machine rather thanan embroidery needle.

A sharp sewing needle is thebest choice when embroideringin-the-hoop designs.

Load the full embroidery file (nota dieline file) to your embroiderymachine.

Attach the hoop, and beginembroidering the design.

Reference the color changesheet for the design as you stitch.That sheet tells you what isstitched in each step.

CC1 is a dieline, or outline stitch,that traces the shape for the frontfabric piece.

After that dieline (outline) hassewn, spray the back of the feltand stabilizer piece withtemporary adhesive.

Place that inside the sewndieline.

Continue embroidering thedesign. The next thing to stitch isa tack down or zigzag stitch. Thisbinds the fabric to the stabilizer.

Other elements of the design willstitch, such as the gifts andribbon on this design.

Reference the color changesheet as you stitch.

When you get to the section thatsays "back piece tack down,"stop the machine beforeembroidering this step.

Remove the hoop from themachine and turn it over.

Spray the back of the insidefabric piece with temporaryadhesive.

Place that on the back of thestabilizer, right inside the sewnshape.

Spray the corners of the backside of the back fabric piece withtemporary adhesive.

Place that piece on the back ofthe embroidery.

The bottom edge should line upwith the bottom edge of the cardholder; the folded edge should beon top, near the point.

The remaining steps will be seenfrom both sides of the holder.Wind a bobbin with the samethread used in the top.

Attach the hoop to the machineand continue embroidering thedesign.

The remaining steps are tackdown stitches, which bind thethree layers together, and a satinstitch finish.

After the design has finished,unhoop the stabilizer and gentlytear the excess away.

Use strips of self-adhesive Velcroto make a closure.

Or, cut two 4" strips of 1/4" wideribbon. Tie knots on one end ofeach strip.

Thread the ribbon through atapestry needle and sew onestrip of ribbon to the point on onthe holder.

Sew the other strip where thepoint meets the back.

Tie the two together to make abow.

To add a hanger, cut a 6" lengthof ribbon. Tie a knot on one end.

Thread the ribbon through atapestry needle and sew theribbon through the top of theholder, about 1/2" from each topcorner.

Tie a knot to the other end of theribbon to secure it in place.

Not only are these gift cardholders a festive way to give yourfriends and family a heartfeltChristmas present, but they'rethe perfect size to hang on thetree, too!
