PUMP UP THE POSSIBILITIES: GETTING IN SHAPE FOR YOUR FUTURE “CONNECTIONS TO THE FUTURE”

Rowland Unified high school senior students preparing to enter college and the workforce will network with business leaders at the annual “Connections to the Future” luncheon event on Thursday, November 10, 2016 from 11 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. at Rowland High School. Organized and facilitated by senior students in the Career Certification Program at both Nogales and Rowland High Schools, the event teaches students professional networking and employment skills as they interact with business leaders. This year’s keynote speaker is professional speaker and author Nick Scott.

Nick Scott is founder of WheelchairBodybuilding.com, a 2-time World Power Lifting Champion, a Paralymphian, and more! His mission is to instill the “can do” spirit in everyone he meets.

The Connections to the Future event highlights the award-winning Career Certification Program of the Rowland Unified School District. The program prepares high school students for college and the workforce with real-world experience in six different industry pathways: Arts & Communications, Business, Family & Consumer Sciences, Health & Medical Services, Public & Human Services, and Technology. Students complete courses and an internship in their field of interest. For more information, visit http://careerpathways.rowland.k12.ca.us.

HOME SWEET HOME BY: NANCY GARDNER

The Gardner family is pleased to have their son, John, back in the United States. After 4 years, John completed his military service in the United States Marines in September, as a corporal P4.

John enlisted in December 2011, and spent September 10 through December 7 in Boot Camp. During his service, John was stationed in Fort Sill, Oklahoma, Okinawa, where he spent the majority of his service, and Camp Pendleton. While in Okinawa, John developed a love for sushi. He is seen demonstrating his chopstick skills in this photo.

Short term assignments brought him to Pele Liu, Palau, and Hawaii. An especially meaningful event was when John was able to join a group of fellow Marines on an excursion to Iwo Jima. There they viewed Red Beach, the site of the battle below Mt. Suribachi.

Since returning to the United States, John has spent his time looking towards his new career as an electrician’s apprentice. He is currently going to Bible seminary in Graham, Washington.

Sharing the American Tradition of ThanksgivingNorman Chavez, ESL/ASE Teacher and former Mess Sgt., U.S. Air Force

As a 19 year old airman in the Air Force, I reported for duty as a Food Service Specialist (cook) in the mess hall at the 366th Combat Support Group, Da Nang Air Base, Viet Nam which I was not happy about when I first arrived there in January of 1970.

After being there a few weeks, I realized how much the other military personnel appreciated a good hot meal, especially those Army infantry soldiers and Marines who had come from out of the jungles of Viet Nam after combat missions. The gratitude they showed gave me and the other guys who worked in the mess hall a real sense of pride.

However, the best time I had in Viet Nam was Thanksgiving. We went all out to make sure the combat troops had the best Thanksgiving ever while they were away from home.

We started preparing for the big feast a couple of days before. Nothing of a traditional Thanksgiving meal was left out. There was turkey, ham, baron of beef, mashed potatoes and gravy, candied yams, vegetables and fresh hot rolls. We also had an assortment of desserts including fresh baked pumpkin pie and sweet potato pie.

Preparing for and serving several hundred military personnel Thanksgiving dinner was both exhausting and a real pleasure. But my most gratifying moment was when about a hundred children from the local orphanages came through the serving line in the mess hall. I will never forget the excitement on their faces. That is a moment I will always cherish.

This year, my wife Patricia, my son Patrick and I will forego our traditional Thanksgiving dinner with our family, and we help serve Thanksgiving dinner to a group of working poor families and homeless individuals who visit the Self-Help And Recovery Exchange (S.H.A.R.E) facility in downtown Los Angeles. My son Patrick is a counselor there, and he asked if we would like to help serve Thanksgiving dinner. Remembering my experience working in the mess hall on Thanksgiving at Da Nang Air Base, I said, “of course” without any hesitation.

Our family has a lot to be thankful for, and we want to show our gratitude by serving others.

Happy 65th Birthday, Rocky! On October 28th Rocky celebrated his 65th birthday. He enjoyed a fun filled day with the office staff!

HAPPY BOSS’S DAY ROCKY!

HAPPILY EVER AFTER BY: MAGDA MAZZARINO My sister, Margarita just got married on Saturday, November 5, 2016 with Dr. Guillermo Rubiano. The first picture was a pretend wedding when they were kids. They each went their separate ways and reunited 30 years later. We were very lucky that our parents, Luis & Leticia Urrea, made it to her wedding….It’s a long and beautiful love story. See the pictures telling the story.
