Editorial GET ON YOUR SOAPBOX The old timers always say they learn more in the hallways of various veterinary meetings than they ever do listening to lectures. While there is much excellent information presented at veteri- nary meetings, those old timers probably had a point. These days, with so much attention to the Internet and all the information which can be found there, we often overlook the value of the various online dialogues which often can be quite interesting, even downright informative. The IAEP website (http://www.iaep.com) has a series of online forums which should be inter- esting once more veterinarians and equine re- searchers begin to use them. The Forum page has a dozen topics listed. You choose one and read what others have thrown out for discussion. If you feel prompted to make comments, there is a place at the bottom of the page to type in your message. Your message then appears on the discussion page, perhaps prompting further dis- cussion from others. The comments remain on the pages for several weeks, so it is not neces- sary to have others immediately online to create a dialogue. This online professional dialogue is a new thing to us all, but it has great potential. It is, however, much like the old hand water pump which tended to require priming with a little bit of water to get the flow started. These dialogue pages need some priming. This is an appeal to help. Please take some time and contribute com- ments in those subject areas which interest you. Soon the dialogue will begin to flow in profusion, and we all will benefit from it. William E. Jones, DVM, PhD
