Get Momentum with Business DominoesA BUSINESS OWNERS GUIDE TO ACCELERATED GROWTH“We often see businesses wait for a major event, or a financial crisis, before they step back and gain a true strategic picture of their business.” says David Foley, General Manager, EMA Learning.

EMA is proud to announce a partnership with the team at Business Dominoes, offering their intensive programme for business owners. At $5,000 per business (4 people maximum) this programme offers EMA members an affordable opportunity to assess their strategic direction and determine how best to leverage their business to build wealth.

Foley says “By partnering with Business Dominoes we aim for EMA members to gain the clarity and confidence to accelerate their growth and build the wealth that they deserve.”

Creator and owner of Business Dominoes, Debbie Humphrey started her first business when she was 19 and has owned over 12 businesses. She’s also consulted to some of New Zealand’s largest corporations on growth initiatives including Meridian Energy, Bluescope Steel, Fonterra, Warehouse Stationery, Wrightsons and Fletcher Building and has won ‘Startup Entrepreneur of the Year’.

“No one provides you with a guide book on owning, growing and selling your own business. Most of us learn from making mistakes or opportunities landing on our doorstep. We often miss opportunities because we fail to see the ‘big picture’ of what is happening in the market and identify the dynamics that allow your business to grow.”

According to Smart Money Magazine, a study in the US showed 80% of pent millionaires ($5 million+) are entrepreneurs who have started their own businesses and then sold them.

“Creating real wealth is about having a business that is growing, owning a unique position in the marketplace and therefore creating a valuable asset for its owner. It doesn’t have to be big to be valuable, it has to have some form of market power ” says Humphrey.

“I’m passionate about arming New Zealand business owners with the tools to put the power in their hands and take control of growing their business. Your ability to carve out your own space in the market is down to one factor - your ability to see the opportunities that your competitors don’t”.

Lead facilitator at Business Dominoes, Mark Robotham says “Financing growth and getting clarity around what’s strategic for their business are key issues facing owners who are growing.”

“Most of the Business Owners we have helped in the past 12 months are all very good at their craft and have built great skills in growing and managing their businesses. But these are all ‘business as usual’ types of activities. Like property ownership, real wealth is obtained through the transactions that you make.”

The Business Dominoes programme isn’t ‘business planning its strategic planning’. The key difference is that in strategic planning you are looking from the outside in, identifying the factors and players that are affecting your ability to attract the strategic assets for your business including customers, channel, staff, finance and investors.

This intensive programme is designed to assess your business situation and prepare a roadmap identifying the types of commercial relationships you will need to assist your growth. It is presented as a combination of 4 one-day workshops and a three hour, one-on-one session, all held over a month.

Business Dominoes addresses four key strategic elements:• Compelling Market Strategy – what is the market landscape and how will your business gain market power?• Lucrative Business Case – how can your business maximise its revenue and profitability?• Clear Investment Proposition – what are the best options to attract the resources you need to grow your business?• Pitching & Deal-Making – what is the best way to communicate a business opportunity and negotiate commercial agreements with strategic partners?

This programme suits business owners who are considering some of the following major initiatives:• Exportingledgrowth• Investinginmajorcapitalexpenditureorresearchand development• Attractinganinvestororseekingbankdebt• Sellingyourbusiness

The Business Dominoes programme will be run from EMA Auckland. Workshop one - 6 June | Workshop two - 7 JuneWorkshop three - 20 June | Workshop four - 21 June.

Testimonial“Glenn Edley from Spike is an EMA member and attended the first

Business Dominoes program in December 2011. “At the time I was a bit

despondent. I’d grown a tidy little business in email marketing but I was getting

bogged down in day to day, operational challenges. I had a big vision but I was losing

confidence in it and my advisors.”

“When I attended Business Dominoes I was determined that the solution was to get an

investor. Like all growing businesses I was struggling with cashflow and couldn’t see how I

was going to compete without some significant investment in a sales team. For me, taking

a helicopter view of my market helped me detach myself from the business and realise

where my business was really at.” says Glenn.

“I now have the tools to analyse my market myself and identify potential opportunities

or partners that can help my business grow. I hadn’t considered other commercial

relationships that I could set up other than an investor. From the course we have now

developed business relationships with companies who see us as a vital partner and are

putting us in front of their clients. Lastly, I learned when in my growth journey might be

the best time to consider an investor and how to go about it”.

“Business Dominoes provided me with the ‘commercial basics’ that every

Business Owner should have. I now know my options and when and how to

involve external advisors. I couldn’t recommend Business Dominoes

more highly.”

Skilled interviewing, carefully backed up with appropriate cross checks, will make it more likely that you will attract an ideal and valuable shipmate: not only someone who has technical skills but also team-compatibility, creativity and importantly the great kiwi attitude of ‘mucking in’ when the weather turns rough!

It only takes one ‘bovine scatological’ (BS) interviewee who has been poorly interviewed and not checked, to rock the boat - sorry to wreck the boat. The Hall of Fame of organisational fiasco is littered with Alice in Wonderland interviewers, let alone

the wonderful litany of oddities they recruit who end up (often through no fault of their own) toiling in organisations where in reality they are as useful as a chocolate teapot!

Most of us believe we know how to interview. The statistics of failed SMEs suggests otherwise. Without proper interview process, offering reliability and validity, you’ll have a success rate of about 17%. A better bet would be to pull a ‘sailor’ off the street - 50-50 chance. (With proper process your success might hit 70%).

Get out of the garbage business, avoid trashing your future - get interview training while you still can.

- Haddo D-Audney©

Haddo is a renowned, exceptional facilitator, and we are proud to have him deliver coursesfor EMA Learning.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------REFERENCES: Advanced Interviewing Skills Workshop. EMA April 30th; June 25th; 2013Statistics New Zealand. (2013). Data on Small Medium Enterprises (SMEs)D’Audney H.R. & S.V.D; (2013) A question of Questions—the Art and Science of Interviewing. Hadvic Publishing.

“... avoid trashing your future - get interview training while you still can.”

Toni Thai a young job applicant with interviewer Sky Larking:

Sky Larking: Let’s talk about your background. What have you learnt from your parents?Toni Thai: My parents taught me about religion, patience and logic.Sky Larking: How is that?Toni Thai: They taught me about religion: They would say: ‘You’d better pray that oil comes out of our best carpet’. Patience: They’d say: ’You’ll sit there until you eat all your spinach.’Sky Larking: And logic?Toni Thai: They’d say: “If you fall out of that tree and break your neck, you won’t be coming to the rugby with us.Sky Larking: You like rugby! Let’s not go any further. When can you start?

If you echo Sky above and employ Toni on the flimsy basis of a parent’s wacky belief system you will be putting your business in jeopardy. Interviews are information-gathering outings.- quality information = quality decisions!

If through poor interviewing techniques, you gather ‘garbage’ information, you will end up with a garbage employee. That can be disastrous. If you are a typical Small Medium Enterprise (SME) in New Zealand then you will employ five or less staff (just like over 90% of our businesses who also notably provide over 40% of the national profit).

Working with small numbers of staff makes it imperative that we get the right people working the boat with us. Imagine that it’s a bit like recruiting for a submarine; as one US Navy wag put it: “When you’re kilometres under the water you need to know who is in the bunk above you pal!” Of course in subs you not only work together (closely) you also live together - challenging one would think.

Incidentally in recent times more SMEs have sunk than have been launched. One reason for these shipwrecks: planting the ‘wrong’ people above or below deck. In tough times we need to be able to rely on the ‘right’ people - ‘one for all and all for one’.

Garbage in, garbage out!Small business pays lethal price for poor interviewing practice
