• Thomas Jefferson and Aaron Burr tied in the electoral college. Jefferson was supposed to be President and Burr V-P.

• Burr refused to step aside. So, the House of Representatives had to break the tie.

• Jefferson won, because his rival, Alexander Hamilton, decided to throw Federalist support behind him.
