    Understanding Location: GreekMigrationMigration,orthemovementfromoneplacetoanother,wasalwaysanimportantpartofGreekhistory.Naturalresources,suchasfarmlandandminerals,werescarceandoftenofpoorqualityonthemainlandofGreece.GreeceslocationontheAegean,Ionian,andMediterraneanSeasmadetravelforconquestanefficientwaytoacquiremorelandandresources.BythetimePhilipIIofMacedoniaconqueredGreece,numerousGreeksettlementshadbeenestablishedintheAegeanSeabasinandallaroundtheshoresoftheMediterraneanSea.AfterPhilipdied,hissonAlexandertheGreatconqueredthePersianEmpire.HeestablishedGreeksettlementsthroughoutSouthwestAsia,Egypt,andasfareastasIndia.

    AfterAlexanderdied,hisempiredidnotholdtogether.Withouthisstrongleadership,hisgeneralsfoughtamongthemselvesforcontroloftheempire.Thispowerstrugglelastedfortwentyyears.Itfinallyresultedintheformationofthreekingdoms:theSeleucidKingdom,theEgyptianKingdom,andtheMacedonianKingdom.About50yearslater,afourthkingdom,thePergamumKingdom,emergedasanewpower.DuringtheentireHellenisticAge,theserulersrepeatedlyacquirednewlandsandgrewstronger.

    Despitetheconstantstruggleforpower,thenewlandsAlexanderhadbroughtintohisempireopenedupnewpossibilitiesfortradeandcommerce.Mostofthekingdomsadoptedthesamesystemforusinggoldandsilver.Havingeveryoneusethesamekindofmoneymadetrademucheasier.TradeandcommerceextendedbeyondtheMediterraneanregionintoAfrica,Arabia,India,andChina.

    AlexandersconquestsalsoopenedupthelandsofsouthwestAsiatoGreekmigration.TheGreeksettlersbroughtwiththemtheirpreferenceforlifeincitieswithGreek-stylehomes,temples,civicbuildings,andstatues.TheHellenisticrulersandwealthycitizenswerewillingandabletospendlotsofmoneytobuildnewcitiesmodeledonGreekculturalcenterslikeAthens.

    TheHellenistickingscreatedgarrisons,orforts,toguardtheirconquests.ManyofthesesettlementswerecoloniesofGreekandMacedonianveteransfromAlexandersarmies.Someofthemhadstayedintheconqueredlands,andothersmigratedfromGreecetoworkinthegarrisons.ThesesettlementsoftengrewandbecameGreek-stylecities,withtemples,gymnasiums,andtheaters.ItwasthroughthiskindofmigrationandsettlementthatGreekculturespreadthroughouttheHellenistickingdoms.Likewise,thenewkingdomsprovidedworkforGreekartists,sculptors,andarchitectstohelpconstructtheirnewcities.Thesenewcitiesattractedpainters,playwrights,poets,writers,historians,andphilosophers.
