ClassicalClassical music is aimed at older people(50+) it is a niche genre and is seen by younger people as weird or strange it is also aimed at people who are of a high social class. This music is similar to Dubstep in the way that it has a very niche audience. The actual music has a lot more class about it then say pop or rap music. It has the ability to tell stories through music. The music is usually very soft and relaxing. Most classical musicians are seen as posh by the public.

PopAs seen on the magazine cover WE POP, pop music magazines can be cheesy and in your face. This is highlighted by the strong pink used on the cover. In pop music audiences have certain expectations and some of these are, boy bands who sing cheesy exaggerated love lyrics. An example of a ‘Boy band’ who adhere to these common stereotypes are JLS and One Direction. You also expect boy bands to look good so that reactions are evoked from teenage girls so that they make more money.

Rap/Hip-HopOn the cover of Vibe magazine you can see Chris Brown a successful rapper wearing a cap, jewellery and he is also showing off his belt buckle. These are some of the common conventions of what audiences expect to see rappers wearing. Some of the conventions you expect to see in the actual music is the artist talking about recreational drug use, having sex with a lot of women, and you also expect to hear about the money the artist has earned An example of an artist talking about recreational drug use is Tyga in his song Molly. Years ago you would expect to hear more meaningful lyrics and the struggle they may have faced to get where they are but now most rap artists talk about is drugs, sex and money. You also expect to hear profanity in this genre. Rappers often try to express a message of social or political views through there lyrics.

Rock/Hard rock

Kerrang is one of the most well known rock/Hard Rock magazines. On the cover you can see Green Day who are a well known rock band. Some of the different things you expect to see rock music artists wearing is the colour black a lot, leather, you expect them to have lots of tattoos and usually cheap clothes. This is because they are often shown to be people who don’t care what society thinks of them. For example Ozzy Osbourne once bit a dead bats head off live on stage this highlights the fact that some rock stars do not care about there image. Rock lyrics are often meaningful. There is usually use of profanity in rock songs.

Electro/DubstepDubstep or electro is often though of as a weird or niche music genre that has a very small audience. This point of view is strengthened by the fact that there are very few Dubstep/electro mainstream magazines because it is not worth the money to produce a publication that only a few people will read. In mine( the audiences) point of view the different things that you expect Dubstep/Electro musicians wearing are piercings, tattoos, skinny jeans and niche market earrings. The stereotypical appearance of a Dubstep artist is very alternate and different to an average everyday person. This is again because they care little about what others think of them. In the actual music you expect to hear angry or strange lyrics. Skrillex adheres to the views i have been voicing on this slide, as he wears glasses, has earrings and an unusual haircut.

ReggaeReggae music is often associated with Bob Marley and the Caribbean but the span of its audience is a lot wider than just the Caribbean. The lyrics and sound of the music are more soulful and meaningful than most genres of music. A lot of reggae music is not mainstream because of the fact that many record labels just don’t sign reggae artists because the genre is not as popular as other genres. Like rap Reggae musicians often use there lyrics to express a political view or view on society. The things you expect to see an reggae artist wear is just normal average clothes, a hat is often worn as well by the artist. Many Rastafarians musicians choose to pursue a career in Reggae because they take Bob Marley as there ultimate inspiration.
