+SEAPEX Oil Barrel Prize 2013

The SEAPEX Oil Barrel Prize is a competition between various Groups to “sell” their region to a CEO of a big multi-national oil company.

GE3244 Group Projects: 30% of total module marks

Petroleum geology of world class producing areas.

Aim. The aim is to review the petroleum geology of some of the world’s most important petroleum producing areas.

You have been randomly allocated an area to a small group of students from your Tutorial/Lab group. You cannot change group or area.See IVLE for the list. If your name is missing or in the wrong Tut/Lab group, please email Dr Oliver asap.

Each Group has been allocated a petroleum producing area from amongst 22 of the following:

Libya, Iran, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Brazil, Qatar, North Sea, Nigeria, Angola, Alaska, Canadian Tar Sands, Caspian Sea, Eastern Rockies USA, California, Gulf of Mexico, Myanmar, Venezuela, China, Western Australia, Coal Bed Methane Australia, Western Siberia, Shale Gas USA. Dr Oliver will cover SE Asia in his lectures.

Recess WeekEach student, as individuals, will undertake a literature review during the Recess Week,. Students are expected to access Library resources (paper and e-resources) and the WWW. It is up to students to contact each other by email and arrange a meeting during Recess Week should they want to. Students should concentrate on the following:

1) Regional Plate Tectonic Framework2) Source rocks and Migration3) Reservoirs4) Traps and Seals5) Production methods and history6) Reserves

Week 9Each group should bring at least one lap top (with wireless connection) to their Tutorial/Lab in Week 9. The findings from the Recess Week should be available in Power Point form for discussion with the tutors. Students will have a draft of suitable Power Point illustrations that can be considered for inclusion in the presentation in Week 13 (see below). Also at Week 9 Tutorial, each group will decide who will take

responsibility for which aspects 1) to 6) listed above. The designated student will then research this aspect in more depth for their individual reports.

Week 11Group Presentations will be given in the Tutorial/Lab session in Week 11. Each group will present a 12 minute presentation on the Petroleum Geology of their allocated area. You will imagine that your audience is a group of CEO’s and their advisers who are contemplating expanding operations into a new region. Your aim is to convince these CEO’s that your area is worth investing billions of dollars.

Note that all presentations must last 12 minutes. You need to practice to the second! Time penalties will be applied.

Each presentation will cover the following:

1) Regional Plate Tectonic Framework2) Source Rocks and Migration3) Reservoir Rocks4) Traps and Seals5) Production methods and history6) Reserves7) Reference list (in alphabetical order)

Each student will contribute verbally to their group presentation. There will be a 3 minute open discussion after each presentation. The group presentation will be assessed. This will be 10% of the module.

Each Power Point Presentation will be posted on the IVLE by Friday 5pm Week 11 so that all students can review the petroleum geology of the world’s most important oil producing areas as part of their revision for the theory exam.

Week 13The four best presentations from Week 11 will repeat their presentations (at the 6 – 8 pm Wednesday lecture slot in LT 12) to an audience of South East Asian Petroleum Exploration Society (SEAPEX) judges plus the rest of the class. Winners will receive SEAPEX certificates and SGD 2000 worth of cash prizes.

Individual ReportsThe Individual Report is a written paper on one or two specialist aspects of the petroleum system from your group area. You are not selling this to anyone. You are demonstrating that you can individually research a topic and write a concise executive report that an oil company CEO can understand.

Each individual student will produce their own (1000 +/- 50 words) typed Executive Summary Report (plus illustrations and maps) on the petroleum geology of their area, with special emphasis on the topic that they studied in detail for the Group Presentation. For example a suitable title could be “Petroleum potential of Vietnam: source rocks and migration”. Word count (given at the end of the report) will not include references, figure captions or any appendices. No more than 8 Figures and 4 Tables are to be submitted: marks will be deducted for those who submit more than this.

Advice on preparing an executive style summary report will be posted on the IVLE.

Students will hand in their reports to the Department of Geography Office by 5 pm on Friday 8th November, Week 12.

AssessmentThis work will account for 30% of the module assessment: of this 10% will be based on the Group Presentation and 20% will be based on the Individual Report.

PlagiarismDon’t. Anyone plagiarizing a previous class’s work will undoubtedly fail the module and be reported to their Dean
