Just hearing the name con-

jures up all sorts of images in

your head—skyscrapers,

Statue of Liberty, cabs honking

and more! A trip to the city is

always unforgettable and will

be filled with incredible mo-

Barry Leonard and Jennifer

Hunter participated in a so-

cratic circle discussion of the

book Liberty and Order:the

First Party Struggle by Lance

Banning. The discussions

were led by Todd Estes,

Ph.D., Associate Professor,

Department of History, Oak-

land University, Rochester,

Michigan. Dr. Estes facili-

tated the discussions of 14

educators from across the

state, including elementary,

middle, high school and Uni-

versity teachers. The teach-

ers spent 14 hours discuss-

ing in depth views of the

founding fathers, Washing-

ton, Madison, Hamilton, Jef-

ferson, Adams and various

other letters and speeches to

analyze the founding of

America's first political par-

ties. Participants responded

to questions from Dr. Estes

from the documents found in

Liberty and Order and devel-

oped rationales of how and

why political parties formed

and how they play a major

role in American government

today. Jennifer and Barry

attended 6 different 90 min-

ute sessions.
