Tlra ExrttKM V the Minister of th Inte-

rior has making a tour f inaprvtion onHawaii, during which he founj near Kaiipa-kne- a

a poor native family, consialinp of amother and ten children, in destitute eirvum-atam-r-- s,

the father having Ikh'O ordeml to

tlie Molokai hospital as n confirmed leper, thereto lie confined probably till death ahull libemtohim. The M mister at once ininVrtook to relievethe neceiwities of this poor family, nnd apntsome fifty dollars in providing for their imme-

diate ants. Poverty is Bo rarely met in theseislsnda, that if any one donbts the truth of thesutrmaiit, v., can give the names nnd place. In such a CMe as this, the government shouldadopt these children and their mother as itswards, and make provision for their supportand education. Practieully they are orphans, made so by the state for the public welfare, and it g to the nation to befriend and

father them. If we are not mistaken, the kindheart of the Minister has ulri'ady moved in thismatter lo secure prompt action for this !oorfatherless household.

In this connection it msy not lie amiss to re-

fer again to a matter to which we have beforecalled public attention the duty of the gov-

ernment making special provision for those pa-

rents who have large families of children, forthe purpose of stimulating an increase of popu-

lation. It is well known, that native infants, especially among the pinir and roving class, diefrom want of parental care and attention, whiletin- infanta of foreign residents live and thrive. Thus the native race decreases while the latterrace increases. To check this decrease shouldbe the great study of our legislators, for untilit is done, there can be no hope of increase.Hip Majesty, in his address to the legislature, recommended that a law be passed exemptingtbe fathers of large families from taxationwhich was a good suggestion ; but the legisla-

ture thought otherwise, and took no notice ofit. In this paper, we went further than theKing, and urged that a kulcana or homesteadbe provided, in addition to the above sugges-

tion, for every such family, when destitute ofone, to be an inalienable trust, under certainprovisions. Such a home is, in every countrya bond of union in a family, binding togetherparents and children, and creating in them astrong and loyal family tie, which does not ex-

ist where they possess no home of their own,but are left to roam over the group, and spongea living from the'r more favored frends. Inthe former case, the inducement is to be con-

tented, honest and. industrious ; in the other to

be restless, dishonest and vagabonds, like too

many of our native population. This may ar

a small matter to some, but it must be re-

membered that if ever the Hawaiian race is re-

generated, it must lie done by paternal care, and by making special efforts, in this and otherways, to develop a home or family pride andthereby encourage an increase of population.

We call the attention of the reader to the ta-

ble showing the domestic exports for the quar-

ter ending Jnne 30th, for which we are indebt-ed to His Excellency the Minister of Finance.A decrease appears in the exjiort of sugar, which is owing to the large amount of this ar-

ticle on hand at the end of June, awaiting ship-

ment to foreign ports. The decrease in the to-

tal value is not unfavorable when we take intoconsideration the fact that the greater portionof the sugar has been purchased here, and theoutward manifests at the Custom House showthe true value to the country ; while the exportof the same period of last year did not returnto the country on an average within one centper pound of the outward value. The sellingof our produce here, before shipment, is theonly safe plan for our planters and agricultur-ists to adopt. This is the way in which thesugar crop of Mauritius is always sold, and theway in which the coffee, tobacco and sugarcrops of the East nnd West Indies are sold. The producer should always shun the risk at-

tending the sale of his produce in a foreignmarket.

Wk publish in anotlaV column a statementof the debts of the principal governments ofthe world, and the rate of interest paid bythem. But it muBt be borne in mind that theserates were fixed when the debts were incurred, some of them many years since. During thelast few years the demand for money to sup-

ply the wants of governments has been so

great, that only those which possess a firstclass credit can obtain it at anywhere nearformer rates. This will be seen by the closingstatement of the London journal, in which it isasserted that as high as eighteen per cent isnow paid by at least one government. Thesmaller, less stable and less wealthy national-

ities are compelled to pay for such loans asthey may require whatever may be the com-

mercial value of money among them. Theaggregate of these public debts is an enormoussum ; and yet it is much smaller than the totalof tbe city, state and railroad debts of thevarious nations enumerated in the list.

Thb report of the Treasurer of the Queen'sHospital, showing that the Hawaiian peoplohave during the last sixteen years collectedand disbursed the sum of $1 68,753.99 for therelief of its destitute sick, may be pointed toas the best evidence obtainable of the maturecivilization which prevails in this kingdom. When to this fact we may add another, thatthe project originated solely with the late KingKamehameha IV. and his widow Qtjkbn Emma, who still lives among us, and that it was notonly- - conceived but perfected by them noworthier monument could be desired to per-petuate the name of its founder. It is butjust to add that each of his successors has tak-

en the same pride in this institution that hedid, and that it promises to become each yearmore beneficial to the people for whom it wasestablished, as well as for the relief of desti-tute foreigners of any nation, who may be-

come its wards.

Thb Conckbt given by Mile. Hma DiMurska at the Kawaiahao Church, June 29, isa noteworthy event for Honolulu, since theeffect produced by a single hearing of so per-fect a singer, who ranks third or fourth amongliving vocalists, is in every way calculated toassist in the formation of correct style, and to

improve the taste of the auditor. The famousHungarian singer has for the last ten yearsbeen considered the world's foremost Soprano-Leggier- o.

She made a grand success in Lon-

don, in 1665, which she repeated in subsequent

seasons, and has likewise won the suffrages ofall the important critics in Europe and Amer-

ica. In person, the lady is a slender blonde, with delicate features, dark eye, and a wealthof golden hair. Her voice it perfectly clear, true snd well trained, reaching easily to F in

alto, which note she gives out as easily a thekylsrk sings its song. Her part in the pro-

gramme comprised "The Carnival de Venice,,'w hich is, by the way, beautifully arranged for

lima Di Murskn, with n most clalxiratc recita-

tive, convinced the delighted audience that n

singer of extraordinary vow er was Iwfore them, and as she went on, bringing fresh bravurapassages, constantly into the boldest relief, their enthusiasm knew no hounds. The Kingrose to compliment her, the peoplo thunderedout applause. The fair singer acknowledgedthe royal compliment in the moat gracefulmanner, and delighted her audience with a

pretty Herman ballad, " Good Night my LittleChild," sung in compliment to Dr. Ed. Hoff-

mann, who handed her a lovely bouquet Sheimparted to this pretty song every grace ofpathetic expression that perfect knowledge of

her difficult art, and a matchless voice couldtiestow. A similnr state of excitement follwedthe rendering of the Hungarian Air, whichwas apparently written to defy, rather than totask the human voice. Mile, di Murska againgratified every ono by singing "The Last Roseof Summer," in English. This song, however, does nol suit her style as well as her more

florid mnsic does. The comic duet which con-

cluded the performance was a rare treat and

would have been had not theKing set the example of forbearance. SignorCesare Kistori, lent his efficient aid in theduet, and also sang two buffo scenes withmuch effect, although his voice shows manysigns of wear. Mr. Pratt accompanied thevocalists very nicely, and also played Gotts-chalk- 's

Meditation remarkably well. Amongthe audience were their Majesties and suite. Also, Madame Kistori, her husband, the Mar-

quis del Gillo, her son and daughter were alsothere, as was Miss Emilie Melville, Mr. TracyTitus, Mr. Edward Ellis; and the Captain andthe Captain and officers of the CiYy of

The Australian Line.A report was brought from San Francisco by

the last mail steamer, to the effect that thePacific Mail Company had secured the contractto perform the Australian mail service betweenLondon, Auckland and Sydney, via San Fran-

cisco. Thife is a very welcome item of news, but needs confirmation, although there isstrong probability that it may be correct. There are no more splendid steamships in theworld than those of this Company, whether werefer to the propellers or side wheelers. ThisCompany is known to have a sufficient numberof spare boats to commence the service at anytime that their contract may demand, though itis stated that the vessels now running willcontinue four months longer, or till November.

Should they secure the contract, it is quitelikely that this place will liecome a port fortranshipment of mails, passengers and cargoes. The China boats will probably touch here onthe outward and return passages, and othersteamers will carry the mails, passengers andfreight from this port to Auckland and Sydney, touching at any immediate places which thecontract may require of them.

This arrangement, should it be perfected, willbe of great advantage to Honolulu, as passen-

gers will have a longer stoppage here andmuch better accommodations will be offered to

all, both through and way passengers. Inthis way, but three boats will bo required to

erform the service between Honolulu, Auckland and Sydney. The present steamers inthe China trade can easily perform the workbetween this port and Sun Fraucisco.

One great advantage which Honolulu willderive from the contract being awarded to

this Company, will lie that we shall have steamcommunication with San Francisco, Japan,China, Auckland, Sydney and perhaps withFiji and Samoa Islands. We add the lastnamed group, because it is quite probable thatthe American Government will subsidizo theline if it will connect with Samoa. No otherarrangement could give so great commercialadvantages to this group as a contract with thePacific Mail Company.

By having steam communication with Japanand China, every facility will bo furnished forimmigrants to come to this group, and the pro-

bability is that many would come, especiallyafter the Reciprocity Treaty goes into force. In this way we should obtain, in a very shorttime, all the laborers that our plantations re-

quire. Indeed, they might flock here, to culti-

vate rice, in too large numbers for the best in-

terest of the natives. In that event, we shouldhave to do as they do in California, impose atax of some kind to check the immigration. There is very little prospect, however, of anysuch necessity.

The next mail will probably decide whatcompany has been selected to perform the mail

service, out of tho four or five bidding for it.From Colonial papers, we learn that Mr. H. H.Hall is still very sanguine of obtaining thonew contract. It is said he is working forhis friends, and he certainly shows great per-severance and pluck.

France and MacJIahon.

Despite all the efforts of aristocrats of France, the richOrleanists, the ambitious Bonapartists, the Bourbon followers of the Bourbon CountChambord (who valued the old Bourbon flag, its white banner and its white lilies more thanhe did the throne), Republicanism apparently

i has already achieved a triumph, and the youngPrince Imperial, as well as the Count de Parisand tho Count Chambord, have lost tho stakesfor which they and their supporters have beenplaying. The resignation of the Committee ofThirty did not lead to a disruption of theCabinet and a resort, as was threatened, byMacMahon to an appeal to the Bonapartistsand Orleanists. Had he the influence and powerthere would be no Republic in France to-

day. He may not desire to restore the Monar-

chy or the Empire, but his course since he wasmade Head of the Executive Power ha cer-

tainly been anything but friendly toward Re-

publicanism. Only popular feeling and senti-ment have held him in check. Whether hedesired to restore King or Emperor we do notknow, or if he merely looked to the strengthen-

ing of his own powers and establishing a sortof half military dictatorship. But in eithercase he failed to carry the masses with him, and, against his will undoubtedly, the Republicseems to have come out ahead. It may be thathe has been necessary to the success of theRepublic, although opposed to it. He is asoldier, and with the army at his command, hehas been in a position to prevent counter re-

volutions and Commune uprisings. Gambettaha worked well, and hi triumph is itl lialllfthan any battle won by Napoleon. Aaa.

The regular biennial meeting of the mem-

ber of the Queen's Hospital Corporation was

held as per notice at noon on the 3d inat. atAliiolani nale, the Hon. K. H. Allen presiding.

The attendance was not as large as from the

general interest felt in the Queen's Hospitalmight hnTe lieen exported.

The Treasurer made his biennial reiwrt,

which will be found Mow, and showa a bal-

ance of 5303.1 S to le due to the Hospital on

the 1st of July. Thus the finance of this in-

stitution, thanks to the provision of the Legis-

lature, show a marked improvement to the

state of affairs two years ago, when the Treas-

urer hod to report a debt of 8l.2.The Secretary made hi biennial report

which contains statement of general interetnnd speak in terms commendatory to the effici-

ency and management of the institution. Thereport will also be found tx'low in full.

The election of five Trustees to take theplace of the outgoing ones resulted as follows :

Hon. S. S. Castle, Hon. J. I. Dowactt, Hon. W.

Q. Parke, Mr. John H. Paty, Hon. W. L. Green.

After tho adjournment of the Society, theBoard of Trustees met for tho purpose of elec-

tion of officers for the ensuing year, which re-

sulted in the following :

Mr. John H. Paty, Treasurer; Mr. F. A.

Schaefer, Secretary; Hon. W. L. Gtcen, Au-

ditor.A reiwrt on the replacing of the present pat-

ent roof by a corrugated iron one, was alsoadopted and the Executivo Committee was au-

thorized to make arrangements for accomplish-

ing this object. This has become of urgentnecessity, as the patent roof, as well as in allother MM of that nature, has proved itself to tie

very unsatisfactory and extremely expensiveto keep in repair. The new roof will of coursediminish the amount on hand to a very smallsum indeed. But for further information we

refer to tho reports herewith.

Report or F. A. Srliiiercr. Fq.. Roerotary orShe ttneeu Hospital.

Ho.voLVLf, July 3, 1875.To tlie Corporators of and Subscriber tr the

Queen's Hospital Corporation.GESTtEMKN, A' ial period having

again clapjod since your last meeting, I havethe honor to submit to you my report.

The business of the Queen's Hospital hasbeen conducted during the laBt two years, strictly irt accordance with the provisions ofthe Charter, and I hope to show in tho fol-

lowing that the institution has not been want-

ing in increased efficiency and usefulness.During the above period, eight regular and

three special meetings of the Board of Trusteeshavo been held for the transaction of business.

The following statement, carefully preparedby the purveyor, Mr. Toel, will be of materialinterest, viz :

1813 persons have received medical treatment, of which 862 were inmates of the Hospitaland 951 dispensary patients, while in the pre-

ceding two years 693 were reported inmatesand 924 dispensary patients, showing an in-

crease of 200 in number. Of these 802 in-

door patients, 57 havo died, being 6 per ct.The number of prescriptions made up was 42,-17- 2.

Receipts from foreign patients amountedto 84276.37, whilo the running expenditures ofthe Queen's Hospital were 819,005.09.

The report of the Treasurer on the 1st July, shows an estimated balance of 83363.13 in fa-

vor of tho Hospital, which proves that the lib-

eral appropriation of the Legislative Assemblyis being expended with economy and careful-ness.

The Queen's Hospital has been constantlygrowing iu popularity with the native as wellas the foreign population, and while my last bi

ennial report spoke of its enlarged sphere ofusefulness, I am happy to say that this stateof things is well maintained.

Much caru and attention has heen devoted to theHospital grounds, for which Dr. K. McKlbbln, jr., deserves well merited thanks at the hands of the publie. The variety of shade trees, of rare plants, vines, shrubs and flowers; the neatness and order of tbeentire surroundings, arc essential requisites to a

well appointed hospital and of as much Importancein many respects as medical treatment itself. But I

beg to call tbe personal attention of the members ofthis society to the Interior of the Hospital buildingand all the buildings thereto belonging. They deserve to be inspected and will assure everyone, tbalfor cleanliness, ventilation, purity of air, order andsystem, our Hospital may well compare with anyother Institution ol a similar character. I deem It a

pleasant duty therefore to commend to you the eff-icient and arduous services rendered to tbe Hospitalby Dr. R. McKibbln, Jr., and Mr. Toel, In tbeir re-

spective positions of Physician and Purveyor. The Hospital building will soon require a roof of

corrugated iron, as tbe patent felt roof which hasnever given entire satisfaction, is becoming very de-

fective. This will be the only extraordinary expen-

diture required.Lately arrangements have been made with Hon.

James Scott, V. S. Consul, to receive sick and desti-tute American seamen as inmates of the Queen'sHospital which arrangement proves mutually satis-factory and accomplishes an object which has re-

peatedly been In contemplation and under discussionsince the estsblishment of this institution.

In conclusion I beg lo express the hope that theQueen'a Hospital ma; still continue to hare largesbare in ImprnTing tbe aanltary condition of Ibispeople and thus fulfill tbe noble mission which"! heIllustrious founders of this institution bad In view.

Respectfully submitted,F. A. Schaefer, Secretary.

We endeavored nearly two year ago to giTO

in theae crdnmn an approximate estimate of

the national debt of the world. We ed

on that oooaaien that the indebtednessof the world might lie placed at about 1,200,-000,00-

Hnring the two year which haTsim-- passed there is grkid reason to believethat a large addition ha been made to thisnum. New countries and old eonntrie Tiewith each other in the money market of Eu-

rope; even China ha within the l ist fewweeks commenced n national debt. There isconsiderable difflcnltr in ascertaining the lia-

bilities of the various nation which are thusheavily indebted. nnnnnl nlnisnnc giveu some assistant in the subject ; thecareful information which the Kconomisl pub-

lishes in the " Investors' Manual " affords alsoconsiderable help in Iving the question. Thefollowing nre the best estimate which we canform of the irincipal national debts at thepresent time. We have contrasted them withthe figures which we gave two year ago

Set Increase...... 1X7,000,000

The apparent increase iu the indebtedness oftho United States nnd the apparent decrease in

the indebtedness of tho Russisn Empire aredue to having followed on this occasion a

different and, we believe, a more accurate au-

thority than in 1873. These ten countries, therefore, owe in the aggregate upwards of

4,000,000,000, and have added nearly 10 percent, to their indebtedness during the last tenyears. No other country in the world owesanything liko 100,000,000. The ten nextlargest debts stand, we believe, about as fol-

lows: Brazil, 82,000,00:); Holland,; Egypt, 75,000,000 ; Portugal,

Mexico, 63,000,000; AustralianColonics, 46,000,000 ; Peru, 37,000,000 ; Bel-

gium, 30,000,000 ; Hungary, 32,000,000 ;

Canada, 30,000,000 ; making a total ofThe 20 largest national debts in the

world amount, therefore, in tho aggregate, to

4,590,000,000. If we add 160,000,000 forthe smaller debts, the national indebtedness ofthe world must amount to 4,750,000,000.

It is nearly as difficult to ascertain thecharges which theso debts involve as theamount of debts themselves. But again takingin the main the Economist as our guide, weshall at the following conclusions :

The debts of theso twenty countries alonoimpose, then, a charge of 188,000,000 a yearon their inhabitants. If we add 1 1,000,000 or

12,000,000 for the unenumernted debts, thenational debts must impose a charge of 00

on tho rs of the world, or oftwice the sum which France, the country withthe largest revenue in tho world, is unnuallyraising.

The rate of interest which these countriesarc severally paying on the nominal amount oftheir debt must not, of course, be confouudedwith the rate at which they can now borrow.Judged by the latest quotations on the StockExchange, some ot these may be given as fol-

lows : England, 3 per cent.; India, 4 percent. ; Holland, if per cent. ; Canada, 4, percent.; Australasia, 4l. per cent.; UnitedStates, 4?4 per cent.; France, 5 per cent.;Russia, 5 per cent. ; Brazil, 5 per cent. ; Italy,6 per cent. ; Portugal, 6 per cent. ; Hungary,TV, per cent. ; Egypt, 8 per cent. ; Tui-ke- 10

In this connection, the following statisticsfrom an Eastern journal, showing the debts oftwelve American cities, having each a population of 100,000, will interest the reader:

HAWAIIAN GAZETTEAN INDEPENDENT JOURNAL,

DEVOTED TO HAWAIIAN PROGRESS.

The Brooklyn 1 rial.

The following is the close of a reviewfilling four pages of the supplement toHarper's Weekly for June 5. which con-

tains the best review of this remarkabletrial that has yet appeared in print :

" Two aspects of the case which we havepassed over in silence have occupied a

great proportion of the time of the judge, jury, and the opposing counsel. Theseare Mr. Beecher's alleged confessions, verbal and written. We have passed themby because the historian must necessarilydismiss them in few words. Messrs.

Moulton and Tilton swear to repeated con

fessions of adultery made by Mr. Beecherin language so grossly vulgar that we

shall not repeat it here. Mr. Beecher explicitly and indignantly denies the lan

guage attributed to him. Charity can

not impute this conflict of testimony tomisapprehension, nor all of it to even an

intentional misconstruction. Either Mr.

Beecher is a liar and a perjurer, or Messrs.

Moulton and Tilton are. That the latter were liars they now frankly confess ;

for that they both again and again assert-

ed Mr. Beecher's innocence of the crimenow charged againt him is testified to bymany witnesses, and acknowledged, as in-

deed it could not be denied, by themselves. That the former has ever variedfrom the truth there is no evidence buttheirs except the evidence of Mrs. Moul-

ton.She swears to a confession by Mr Beech-

er not less shamelessly explicit. She fixes

the date of this interview by a letter;and it has been proved by the testimonyof several independent and disinterestedwitnesses that Mr. Beecher was not andcould not have been with her at the time

tctici she has specified, and he denies thatthe confession thus imputed to him wasever uttered to her at any time. Deniedno less vigorously than the other confes-

sions, with them it must stand or fall.

The letters of Mr. Beecher abound in

expressions some of them eloquent in theirpathos of remorse. The authorship ofthese letters, except that penned by Mr.

Moulton on January I, 1871, is not in dis-

pute. Their analysis would transcend ourlimits. It must suffice to say that Mr.

Beecher in a protracted examination wentover them one by one, and essayed to ex-

plain every word and phrase which theycontained. The reader who, from the his-

tory of the case, believes Mr. Beecherguilty of the crime attributed to him will,of course, interpret these letters in thelight of that conclusion ; but he who thinkshis innocence consonant with the indispu-table facts of the case, will find no diff-

iculty in comprehending his poignant re-

morse, when made to believe that he hadunwittingly suffered a wife to transfer tohimself her affections, had unconsciouslybroken up a household which he lovedand in which he had found almost a secondhome, and had, by harboring suspicionswhich he was subsequently induced to be-

lieve unjust, aided to despoil and destroya young man of noble possibilities, whomhe regarded almost as an adopted son.For the same reason that we have not at-

tempted to analyze Mr. Beecher's corres-

pondence we have not referred to that ofMr. Tilton and Mr. Moulton. If the for-

mer are more easily reconcilable with thetheory of Mr. Beecher's guilt, the latterare not easily reconcilable with any othertheory than that of his innocence.

Thus far we have endeavored simply totell the story of the case without inter-jecting into the narrative our own per-

sonal sympathies, prejudices, or judg-ment. Those sympathies are neverthelessvery 6trong, that judgment is very clear.Under a careful analysis the evidenceagainst Mr. Beecher utterly fails. Itwould not suffice against a man much lessstrongly intrenched in public esteem thanhe : against his pure life and noble charac-ter it breaks in vain, as the foam of the an-

gry ocean against the cliff which it canobscure but cannot destroy. The case isone ofconspiracy against a good and great, though careless, man, but a conspiracywhich grew rather than was formed, which was the natural product of the jeal-

ousy of rather than the delib-at- e

contrivance of greed. On the one sideis a man the greatness of whose heart andthe credulity of whose sympathies are atonce his genius and his weakness ; on theother is a man whose insane jealousy isthe natural though deadly fruit of an in-

sane imbittered by a spirit ofpersonal and fell revenge. He is aidedunconsciously by the idolatrous affectionand the too implicit obedience of a weak, morbid, and suffering wife, and by theshrewd devices of a " heathen " friend.

The key to the comprehension of thiswhole case is Mr. Tilton's frank declara-tion, " I resolved to smite Mr. Beecher tothe heart." The arrow was well fashioned, the bow well bent, but the destroyer hasfailed of his purpose ; and when posterity, wiser than we, reads the history of thiscase, it will honor, not less than the nobleachievements of Henry Ward Beecher'snoble life, the no less noble failure of thepatience and magnanimity of his only toochivalric and unhappily unsuccessful en-

deavor to shield "all the other heartsthat would ache " from the publication ofthe famous Brooklyn scandal."

e There was a bitter, let us hope an unconscious, sarcasm in Mr. Moulton. statement to Mr. Beecher," I am a heathen ; bat I will try to too w you ho w walla heathen can serve 70a I"

A little girl on the train was asked what mo-

tive wax taking her to the city. ' I believe the;call it the locomotive," said the little innocent.

Lean a Trade.

I never look at my steel composing rulethat I do not bless myself that, while mystrength lasts, I am not at the mercy ofthe world. If my pen is not wanted Ican go back to the type case and be sureto find work, for I learned the printer'strade thoroughly newspaper work, jobwork, book work and press work. I am

glad I have a good trade. It is a rockupon which the possessor can stand firm-

ly. There is health and vigor for bothbody and mind in an honest trade. It is

the strongest and surest part of the self-mad- e

man. Go from the academy to theprinting office or the artisan's bench, or,if you please to the farm for to be sure, true farming is a trade, and a grand one

at that. Lay thus a sure foundation, andafter that, branch off into whatever pro-

fession you please.Yon have heard, perhaps, of the clerk

who had faithfully served Stephen Girardfrom boyhood to manhood. On thetwenty-firs- t anniversary of his birthday he

went to his master and told him his timewas up, and he certainly expected import-

ant promotion in the merchant's service.

But Stephen Girard said to him :

" Very well Now go and learn atrade."

u What trade, sir."" Good barrels and bntts must be in de-

mand while you live. Go and learn thecooper's trade, and when you have madea perfect barrel, bring it to me,"

The young man went away and learnedthe trade, and in time brought his old mas-

ter a splendid barrel of his own make.

Girard examined it, and gave the makertwo thousand dollars for it, and then said

to him :

"Now, sir, I want yon in my countingroom, but henceforth you will not be de-

pendent upon the whim of Stephen Gir-

ard. Let what will come you have a goodtrade always in reserve."

The young man saw the wisdom and un-

derstood.Years ago, when the middle-age- d men

of y were boys, Horace Greely wrote:" It is a source of great consolation to

us that when the public shall be tired ofus as an editor, we can make a satisfac-

tory livelihood at setting type or farming,so that while our strength lasts ten thou-

sand blockheads, taking offense at some

article they do not understand, could notdrive us into the poor house."

And so a man may become truly inde-

pendent.

Murder on the II Is It Seas.London, May 3. Tho schooner Jeffer-

son Borden, from New Orleans for thisport, has arrived off Porth Leven. TheCaptain reports that the crew mutinied.

The first and second mates were killed, two sailors wounded and put in irons, one

sailor wounded and chained to the pump, and another dying. The vessel wasworked by three hands.

London, May 4. 1 a. m. The follow-

ing additional particulars have been ob-

tained of the mutiny on the Jefferson Bor-

den : The schooner Jefferson Borden,Patterson, Master, sailed from New Or-

leans March 5 for London. When 1 8 daysfrom the former port a mutiny broke out.Captain Patterson and his officers foughtthe men with revolvers and knives. Aftera terrible struggle, in which the first andsecond mates were killed, the Captain suc-

ceeded in disabling and seenring all themen who resisted. He hailed passing ves-

sels and obtained sufficient hands to workthe ship, and proceeded on his voyage toLondon.

London, May 4. Mutineers on boardthe schooner Jefferson Borden, Capt. Patterson, New Orleans, La., March 5, forLondon, took opportunity to carry outtheir plot to seize the vessel when onwatch with the first mate and a boy. Thelatter was gagged, and the men thenstruck the first mate from behind, fractur-

ing his skull. The second mate, comingto his rescue, was thrown overboard alive. The boy got free and alarmed Capt. Patterson, who, coming from the cabin withtwo revolvers, fired upon the mutineerswith effect. One of them received sevenbullets, a second was wounded in the storaach, and the third may live until the ves

sel reaches London.

Newspapers as Educators.A school teacher of our acquaintance

who has had the benefit of a long practiceof his profession, and has watched closelythe influence of a newspaper upon a fami-

ly of children, gives a result of his observations that, without exception, thosescholars of both sexes, who have access tonewspapers at home, when compared withthose who do not, are :

1. Better readers, excelling in pronunci-

ation, and consequently read more under-standing!)-.

2. They are better spellers, and define

words with ease and accuracy.3. They obtain a partial knowledge of

geography in almost half the time it re-

quires others, as the newspaper has madethem familiar with the locations of important places and nations, their governmentand doings.

4. They are better grammarians, for, having become familiar with every varietyof style in newspapers, from commonplaceadvertisement to the finished and classical

oration of the statesman, they more readi-

ly comprehend the meaning of the text, andconsequently analyze its construction withaccuracy. Golden Era.
