What is in this

issue?

Branch committee responsibilities

A branch committee member is required to:

1. actively participate in setting the direction of the branch in meeting its objectives 2. make a wholehearted commitment to the branch responsibilities 3. communicate effectively to all tiers of membership on issues regarding members and

students.

Toastmasters Sandton

Toastmasters is a club which helps people develop their public speaking skills by coaching and mentoring them to gain confidence when addressing large audience enabling them to become inspired communicators.

As of 30 June 2013, the CIMA Gauteng Toastmasters Club, based in Sandton, became a Presidents Distinguished Club. Dineshrie Pillay, Club President said: “Being recognised as a Presidents Distinguished Club is the highest recognition a toastmasters club can achieve. To add to our success over the past 18 months, four CIMA members and students achieved the status of “Competent Communicator”.

Currently there are 30 members. The club welcomes both CIMA and Non-CIMA members and students. If you are interested or would like to find out more, email the VP of membership at [email protected] Toastmasters membership drive

On 24 January 2013, a membership drive was held for the Toastmasters club at Regenesys Campus, Sandton.

Over 100 people attended this event. This is said to be a record-breaking number of people to attend a Toastmasters demonstration meeting in Southern Africa.

The event was a success with 22 delegates subsequently joining the club in Sandton, the remainder were provided with details on how to join a club outside of the Sandton area.

Committee Profile

Henry Botha ACMA, CGMA, Immediate Past Chairman

After completing his BCom degree in Econometrics, Henry started his career at Absa Bank as a Financial Business Analyst in Gauteng. He was then seconded to the Absa Finance head office and has since fulfilled the role of Business Consultant, Programme Manager, Business Analyst to name a few. He currently holds the position of Finance Head of Decision Support, Absa Retail Markets.

He qualified as an ACMA in 2009 and is the Past Chairman of the Branch and represents the South African Branches on the CIMA Africa Regional Board.

Over and above his involvement in CIMA, he is also very active in promoting toastmasters in his workplace and CIMA. At the start of 2012 he created a CIMA Toastmasters Club and was president of the ABSA Toastmasters Club in the same year. Henry enjoys spending his free time with his wife and son. He enjoys cricket, motorsport and bargain hunting on auctions.

How has being a member of the committee contributed to your personal and professional life? I only discovered the value of stepping up as a leader when I joined the committee. Not “stepping up” earlier in my life is maybe the one regret I have and something that has been energized by the mentors in my life. In the corporate environment, I had to learn that being an introvert doesn‟t mean you have to be quiet, it means you probably spend a bit more time than others to reflect before you have something to say.

My involvement in the committee has given me the confidence to also step up in my personal and professional life. It has taught me to be brave and patient, driven and attentive to ultimately achieve our goals.

What inspires you and where do you find inspiration? I‟m inspired by the prospective value of something that hasn‟t been developed, but exists in concept. Maybe that is more a driver than an inspiration but it is the driver that gives me inspiration to take control of the development.

What has been the biggest highlight for you since joining the committee? The biggest highlight for me has not been the title of chairman or being elected to the African Board. It has been the tenacity of this committee to continue to serve its members and students needs. When we provide an event that benefits the attendees, the satisfaction of the event provides me with a sense of achievement.

Why should other CIMA members and students consider joining the committee? CIMA is a member led organisation. Joining the committee provides a platform to communicate your opinion and make a difference. Changes do not happen, if there is no one to lead it. Let me explain what I mean by way of an example:

A group of students in Polokwane continuously complained about not having an exam hall in Polokwane. One of the students, Dominic Tsoarelo who shared the same view, actually did something about it. This was the difference between him and the other students, he was willing to be proactive and within six months the exam centre became a reality. His will and motivation not only helped himself but the entire CIMA community.

Do you hold any other voluntary positions within CIMA? If so - what made you decide to join these other committees? I represent the Gauteng Branch on the Africa Branch Forum. I joined this forum due to the chairman duty at that time. I was elected to represent South Africa on the Africa Regional Board.

What is the one thing about you that we would be surprised to learn about? I have absolutely no routine. I will wake up anytime between 3:30am and 5:30am. I never know which mode of transport I will use, between my car and the Gautrain. I never park at the same parking spot whether I am at work or at the Gautrain station. The reason for this is because then I won‟t forget where I parked, because I won‟t become used to a certain spot. How long have you been a member of the CIMA Gauteng Committee? Since April 2010

Influential member profile Alfred Ramosedi FCMA, CGMA

Alfred Ramosedi was born in the Free State town of Wesseslbron. He comes from a family of eight; three sisters, and four brothers. He is married and has three children.

He completed his Bachelor of Commerce and MBA at Wits University and is a Fellow of CIMA. After completing his BCOM he went on to work at Vaal Reefs Mine in Orkney. He spent three years on the mine and then joined Nedbank in 1995 where he stayed until 2010, where he held numerous positions. Currently he is the Managing Director of Nedbank Private Bank.

He joined ABSA in 2010 and moved to African Bank in 2012 where he has been appointed as Executive Head of Retail Operations. His responsibilities include: managing risk, customer service, distribution network, in-branch collections and finance.

Alfred was Chairman of the CIMA Southern African Regional Board and is currently on the School Governing Board at St Andrews School for girls. To keep fit he cycles and occasionally plays golf.

What influenced your decision to become an FCMA? CIMA gives one the advantage of operating at a strategic level in the company. Becoming an FCMA is a further step in that direction; the exposure one gets by having studied and the ability to add value is immense.

What are the two greatest business lessons that the FCMA designation has taught you over the years? It has taught me how to operate a business and look at it from an holistic point of view, in order to connect the pieces quickly. To add it has given me the ability to not only think long term but at the same time focus on the short term. I have also managed to move from the accounting/ financial area into business quite easily. I have also found that one is able to grasp concepts quicker.

You were a previous member of the CIMA Gauteng committee. Why should CIMA Members and students consider joining their local committee? How has being a committee member benefited your business and professional life? I started participating in local committees‟ way back in 1999. CIMA is a member led organisation and relies solely on the time given up by its members to prosper. So I think it is important that members contribute to build the brand, secondly you get a lot of exposure to different people and activities. I had to organise events and activities for the branch and I learned a lot from the speakers and the attendees.

What is the difference between being a CA(SA) and a Chartered Management Accountant? Businesses require different things from different people. Currently there is huge demand for financial staff who add value and who can integrate into the business. As such accountants that are forward looking are in great demand in most businesses. CIMA provides this perspective. Secondly in these difficult economic times people who can operate across the organisation with the strategic capability offer better insights in running businesses than others.

What advice would you give to CIMA members and students in South Africa who are competing against a CA(SA) for senior ranking positions? Focus on your core strength which is your understanding of the business and how you can add unique value to businesses. You are not an auditor, so you add a lot more than an accountant.

What are the aspects that make your job easy? Understanding the numbers, ability to interpret complex issues, knowing how to work with people and finally communicating well.

What motivates you in career and in business? Seeing people grow, and leading people.

What do you consider to be your greatest accomplishment? Having completed CIMA and breaking into executive management. If people were to follow your path – what would be your advice to them? Stay focused; do not change your career often. Invest in your health and manage people well.

What is the one thing we would be surprised to know about you? I cannot swim

Which book are you currently reading? The Alchemist.

If you would want to be more involved in your committee, please contact Dineshrie Pillay.
