Hot air balloons are just that: balloons full of hot air. If a gas expands when heated, then hot air occupies a larger volume than cold air. Hot air is should then be less dense than cold air. Once the air in a balloon gets

hot enough, the weight of the balloon plus the hot air is less than the weight of cold air, and the balloon starts to rise. When the gas in the balloon is cool, the balloon returns to the ground.

• Have you ever wonder why soda goes flat?• Inside soda there is Carbon Dioxide which is dissolved in the

soda.• When soda is made they add high pressure carbon dioxide to

the headspace and the more gas in the soda is proportional to the pressure in the headspace.

• So the more pressure in the headspace and the more carbon dioxide in the soda will give the soda that bubbly taste.

• This is Henry’s Law:– The mass of a gas which will dissolve in the solution which is proportional to the partial

pressure of that gas above the solution.

Boyle’s Law and Deep Sea Fish

Boyle’s LawP1V1= P2V2 (P=pressure; V=volume)

When pressure increases, volume decreases. When pressure decreases volume increases.

Deep sea fish die when brought to the surface. The pressure decreases as the fish are brought to the surface, so the

volume of gases in their bodies increases, and pops bladders, cells, and

membranes.

Sam ChengPeriod 2 Behavior of Gases

Gas laws involving pressure, volume, and temperature play in an important part in scuba diving. Gas laws help predict how air behaves as a scuba diver descend into the depths of the ocean. The change in the behavior of air will have in effect on a scuba diver’s body and equipments. The most obvious aspect that gas laws affect scuba diving is the BCD, buoyancy compensator device. BCD is a piece of scuba diving equipment that can be inflated by adding air to it. This is used by scuba divers to maintain a neutral buoyancy. However maintaining a neutral buoyancy becomes complicate because of increase in pressure of the air as a scuba diver descends. This also applies to the air in a scuba diver’s lungs. Holding your breath while you ascend can caused your lungs to burst because of the sudden decrease in pressure, which caused and increase in volume in the air contained in your lungs.

Gas laws are also responsible for oxygen toxicity in scuba diving.

Nitrogen vs. Oxygen: Tire Inflation

Tires need to be under certain pressures(psi) to be safe on the road.

Certain temperatures and pressures cause oxygen to react and damage tire internally.

FACT: A tire filled with “plain” air can lose 1.5psi. In less than a month. A tire filled with nitrogen can take up to six months to lose the same amount.

Arangely NunezLAW: Charles Law of GasEXPLAINATION: This topic relates to gas laws because it

shows Charles Law of Gas in action. Charles Law explains that volume and temperature vary directly. As one goes up, so does the other. This topic shows that as you increase the temperature in the environment, the balloon’s volume changes and it gets bigger. If you were to go ahead and decrease the temperature, the balloon’s volume changes and it gets smaller. This also shows how the molecules work. When the molecules are heated, they begin to move very rapid, and collide harder and faster, bouncing off the walls of the balloon, making it expand to make room for them to move around in.

Volleyball

•Volleyball uses gas laws.•For example the force and pressure put on the ball determines how far and how strong the volleyball will go. •As well as the amount of air molecules and if it’s full or just a little flat.•Also the temperature the volleyball may have been kept in always shows in it’s performance throughout the game.•All these factors go into effect, which makes it interesting how gas laws exactly are used trough this.

•Deep sea fish that are use to such high pressures in the oceans around the world, die as they swim to the surface.

•According to Boyle’s gas law, pressure and volume are indirect.

•As the fish swim to lower pressures the volume of the gases within their body increases and as the gases expand, they pop several bladders, cells, and membranes of the fish.

Gas Law & Soccer Ball

• Pressure inside the soccer ball is affected by temperature of the air inside the ball and the volume of the ball; combined gas law

• Molecules inside the ball are moving constantly and pressure is applied when hitting the walls of the ball

• Two other types of pressure involved: atmospheric pressure and pressure of wall

• When air is pumped into the soccer ball the pressure increases because more molecules are hitting the wall of the ball more often

• When the gas pressure increase so does the pressure of wall; the ball is fully inflated

How it relates to gas laws?

• Hot Air balloons are based on a simple principle: warmer air rises in cooler air since hot air is lighter than cool air b/c it has less mass per unit of volume.

• It reflects on the density of the air in the balloon (reduced).

• Relates to Charle’s gas law as temperature increases, volume increases.

My initial thought when it came to scuba diving gear was that its only purpose was to allow the person to breathe. However the gear protects the diver from the effects of gas laws and releases demonstrations as well. The diver must also know how to breathe correctly in order to avoid any internal damage; I never knew it could have that much of an impact..

Once the scuba diver begins to go deeper into the ocean, the pressure released from the depth of water increases. According to Boyle’s Law, as pressure increases the volume decreases. If it were not for the scuba gear the diver’s lungs and ear drums are in potential danger. A regulator is the air tank gives a sufficient amount of pressure so the lungs do not shrivel and kill the diver.

The diver must also regulate breathing once reaching the surface. The extreme release of pressure may cause lung expansion. If they hold their breath from 30 meters to 10 meters then the lung expands by 50%.

Whoopie Cushions• Whoopie cushions are a

great example of Boyle’s law PV=PV because as you sit down on the cushion which is the equivalent of applying pressure the cushion gets smaller which is a decrease in volume. Oh and we can’t forget the sound it produces when enough pressure is applied, I mean who doesn’t like to see the horrified face of the victim now that’s funny.

The cannon relates to gas laws because the heat ignites the gunpowder which increases the pressure to shoot the cannon ball.
