IN CONVERSATION Gary Bourlet, Andrew Bright and Joan Scott Andrew Holman, Editor, Community Living, Walcare, the Street, Herringswell, Bury St Edmonds, IP28 6ST For this edition of `In conversation' I have talked to three people with learning dif®culties who have been and still are) very much at the forefront of the self-advocacy movement in England. We covered many topics in our talks but concen- trate here upon work, self-advocacy and the implementation of Valuing People. Gary Bourlet ®rst became involved in self-advocacy in the early 1980s and is usually acknowledged as the force behind the ®rst self-advocacy group in the UK. Gary now works for both Bristol and Swindon People First and is on the new National Forum of people with learning dif®culties the group working with the Learning Disability Task Force). Andrew Bright became involved in self-advocacy a few years later when appointed to a job with that People First group in London; he has gone on to work in a number of different areas, currently working part time with the Elfrida Society and also ®nding time to do a variety of independent consultancy and training. Finally, Joan Scott is a long-standing member of People First of Norfolk and is also the new co-chair of the new National Forum and an active member of her local partner- ship board. Gary starts by talking about his early involvement; he reminds us that `in those days we were workshop student committees from day centres meeting in the Mencap roof room at Golden Lane'. From these meetings, he says `grew the beginnings of self-advocacy in the UK'. An initial group of six formed the `Mencap participation forum group' which, he rightly reminds us, was `a lot of jargon and a bit of a mouthful'. The group started talking about issues in day centres and went on to hold a ®rst `nerve racking conference' on the subject. Staff from the day centre, including the canteen staff, attended to hear Gary's ®rst talk entitled `dull food makes dull minds'. He remembers the `canteen staff were not well pleased'. The next major step Gary recalls was a trip in 1984 to the `First People First International Conference in Seattle'. A group of nine people with support was funded to attend. He recalls the main messages from the conference were all about `enthusiasm, con®dence, assertiveness, getting things done, making changes and the need to set up your own group'. This was a huge inspiration to him and led to the immediate setting up of `People First of London and Thames' on his return. This group stared life with shared of®ces at the King's Fund Centre in London. Gary remembers there was `lots of arguing, lots of bickering' going on to say that `some things don't change!'. At this time Gary travelled around the coun- try talking to everyone he could; he remembers `writing lots of letters, I hand wrote every one, I copied out four pages 300 times and bought the stamps out of my bene®ts to send to any address I could ®nd to get people interested'. Looking back now he feels they really did achieve a lot in a short time gaining funding to `employ two people with learning dif®culties with support' and going on to host the second international People First conference in Twickenham, which he remembers as `fantastic in itself'. Andrew Bright started work for the renamed People First of London Boroughs as administrator in 1991. The group had now moved to of®ces in Bethnal Green in London, sharing photocopiers with the old CMH, now Values Into Action VIA). He says he `learnt a lot about self-advocacy' at this time and how `important the People First movement was'. Andrew remembers the support they had at this time which in retrospect was not a good experience. He says `it was dif®cult to work for a man who didn't have a learning dif®culty and who was a bully'. He felt that they were treated 94 # 2002 BILD Publications, British Journal of Learning Disabilities, 30, 94±96 Gary Bourlet
