vented jelly-big deal. What's missing is the his-torical context behind these facts.

George Washington Carver wasn't just a blackfarmer. He lvas a son of a slave woman, yet he man-aged to grow up to be recognized by TIME magazine as a "Black Leonardo" (as in Leonardo daVinci). His respected contributions to agriculturechallenged the mainstream notion that Black peoplewere an intellectually inferior race, and he managedto do all this rvith the mediocre education that r.vas

available to Blacks in the early 1900s. Horv manytelevision ads say all that?

Today, I hope people have the same enthu-siasm for learning more about Black history. I hopethey do care and become more proactive and recep-tive to further integrating Black history into their re-spective academic disciplines and daily affairs."

Last year, USC's Black History Month events in-cluded a broad range of some pretty interesting ac-tivities. Martin Luther King III spoke at the KogerCenter; there was a Black History Quiz Borvl; a Hu-

When asked what she remembers the Uni-versity doing to commemorate the month, one USC student said she kind of remem-bers the big bulletin board in Russell House.

"I wish I could say I lvas more informed aboutblack history," Sarah Choman, a sophomore busi-ness major says. "February definitely brings Blackhistory to mind a little. The TV specials have helpedsome, but I learned more about it in elementaryschool than anything else." When asked lvhat sheremembers the University doing to commemoratethe month. Choman said she kind of remembers thebig bulletin board in Russell House.

good a job as it could have in presenting Black His-

"I don't think USC is very successful in creatingawareness about Black History Month." Alex Adel-man, a sophomore economics major says. "HonestlyI think MTV does a better job." And many studentsa_qree.

-DREW BARRYMOBE- HEIS JUST NOT THAT INTO YOUs Drer,v Barrymore Points out in"He's Just Not That Into You."there are a ridiculous number ofrvays to contact someone in this

modern age that don't involve any sort ofactual person-to-person interaction. Profilepictures and statuses override the person-a1 part of personality. A11 this technoiogyclrastically affects the way \'r'e get to knolvpeople. You can go on Facebook and knou'someone before even meeting him or her'It's easy to identify mutual friends, favoriteTV shorvs, movies, books (if you happen toread), hobbies, sense of humor and prob-ably alcoholic beverage of choice, all in a

fivc-minute scope of a one-page profile, pictures and rvall posts. No first date neces-sary.

And so, the art of dating, courting anddeveloping a relationship is dead.

"I feel like expectations have shifted. Ifeel like actual dates are now taboo," ErynFlanagan, a sophomore hospitality man-agement major, says.

So often we get caught up in our fast-paced, technology-based lives that rve don'treahze how much things have changed.

How much? This much:In 1969,Jane lived in an all girls dorn,,

"vith no computer of her own, and definitely

no cell phone. There was a house phone inthe hallway shared among about 24 girls. in

22 garnet&black februarY 09

order lor Charlie to seeJane, he n'ould callthe house phone. The house mother rvouldanswer, and he rvould then have to ask tospeak toJane.Jane rvould run to the phone, quite excited that a boy rvas calling, and po-litely ask r'vhat his intentions rvere. Charlie, after having planned out this conversationin his head at least five times before calling, asks Jane to accompany him to a concertsponsored by the universiry Jane, elated, accepts his in,itation. Charlie arrives at theall giris dorm at his set time, r'vaits in thelobby for the house mother to getJane lromher room, leaves for the dance, and returnsJane to her dormitory before 11 Pm'

What a joke.In the current coilege social scene, it's

third base before last names, it's a "hey sexiwhat u doin" text instead of a call, it's par-ties instead of dinner. Not too long ago girlsgiggled over a surprise kiss at the end of a

first date."I love the old fashion rvays ol dating. I

rvish we still u'rote letters and boys openeddoors instead of honking the horn outside,"Flanagan says.

College students rvho follorv this oIdschool technique are nou'in the minority

So, r,r,hy is it so difficult for us to go onactual dates? Is romance, as lve knor'v it,dead? Who holds the biame?

Though manv girls u'ould love to point

the finger, it isn't entirely the guy's fault.Girls aren't demanding to be "rvooed." Infact, they are just as likely to make a bootycall as any guy Girls have come to accepta lou,er standard of romance, and becauseof this, boys have continued to slack ofl Noone \vants the responsibility that comes r'r'ithgoing out on dates.

"When you are of the right age, datesusually consist of groups going to a bar' Ifanything goes wrong at least you'll haveyour friends there. Dating is more of a

group thing nou'," Taylor Miller, a juniornursing majoq says.

Though our generation needs to takesome responsibility for its actions, or lackthereof, there are certain external lactorsthat make it extremely di{ficult for collegestudents to date as rvell.

Media is often blamed for the desensiti-zation of American youth. It may sound ri-diculous, but it is hard to deny the strong ef-fect media has on our lives. No one is morea{Ibcted by the media than college students. In our environment, quoting movies is hipand knowing every ll'ord to a 'Lil \\hyncsong is admirable.

"Media and technology definitely playinto it. You don't go on dates anymore, )routext and stalk on Facebook," Nliller says.

It's possible to text someone from any-u,here. And rvhen they aren't studying or
