MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. DAYA DAY TO CELEBRATE PEACE AND HUMAN RIGHTSBorn January 15, 1929, Martin Luther King, Jr. is among the most well known civil rights activists in the world. In the 1950s, he led several non-violent acts of defiance to protest racial segregation and in 1963 led the March on Washington where he delivered his famous I Have a Dream speech. On October 14, 1964, King received the Nobel Peace Prize for combating racial inequality through nonviolence. Although initially not all states observed the holiday, it was passed into law in 1983 by Ronald Regan and finally in the year 2000 observed in all of the states in the U.S. Visit the library to learn more about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and his legacy.
