A Need For Fresh Produce

The Garden Club shall gather members of the University of South Florida St. Petersburg student body who enjoy the processes of gardening, producing local food and wildlife habitat sustainably, and regenerating urban landscapes with ecological practices such as creating edible plant guilds, planting soil amending and dynamic nutrient accumulating species across the garden, and ultimately across campus.

The globalization of world trade has resulted in cheap, imported produce available to consumers year round. In today’s society, it’s nearly impossible to eat from 100% local sources; the FDA estimates that 35% of the fresh produce that Americans buy is imported from other countries. It’s natural to be excited by low prices, especially if you are a college student who is strapped for cash. A lower price tag is almost always better than a higher one, but have you considered the true cost of choosing these cheap, non-local goods?

People are starting to care more how their food is produced and where it comes from. The recent resurgence of eating local is driven by not only the popularity of clean eating, but an expanding environmental awareness as well. just may one day lead us to agriculturally sustainable communities. With our growing environmental consciousness and the ability to share information thanks to the internet, people are starting realize that eating homegrown just tastes better!

The Garden Club can be a fun way to connect with peers and bond over something meaningful! The experiencing, though sometimes challenging, is great for our planet and is an accomplishment in itself. Being a part of USFSP Garden Club is a positive and productive way to practice sustainability, while meeting new people and building your resume!
