Houck MedfordNC DOT Disaster at Deep Gap- One2014NFS

In 2003, the widening of US Highway 421 from Winston-Salem to Boone, NC and its realignment with the Blue Ridge Parkway at Deep Gap was completed. The North Carolina DOT, unfortunately, did not make adequate allowances for managing the water runoff

at the highway’s boundary intersection with Critcher Farms. Over the last 10 years and continuing today, this once pastoral landscape has eroded into a chasm of canyon proportions – leaving the land damaged almost beyond repair. This photograph is a long exposure panorama of existing conditions.

Eastern hemlock trees are some of the largest and most common trees in the Great Smoky Mountains. Hemlocks play an ecologically vital role in cooling mountain streams and providing habitat for many other species. Unfortunately, these trees are under attack from a non-native insect called the hemlock woolly adelgid

(Adelges tsugae). Without successful intervention, the hemlock woolly adelgid is likely to kill most of the hemlock trees in the park.

Woody Keen standing in a clear cut near the Kid’s Trail at Dupont State Recreational Forest. Woody’s outdoor career, which includes organizing to protect Dupont State Recreational Forest from private housing development, was

emboldened when he witnessed the reality of clear cutting on USFS land in the 1980s. After starting his outdoor career on the manufacturing side (he launched Misty Mountain Threadworks), he has become one of the most outspoken leaders of sustainable trails and recreation in the nation.

Photographs in this catagory are images documenting environmental concerns in Central and Southern Appalachia.

Catherine HopkinsSlope Sliding Away2013$220

According to the North Carolina Geological Survey, some 300 landslides were documented in western NC during the record rainfall in the first seven months of 2013. The vast majority of those slope failures involved slopes altered by development and mobilized into damaging debris flows. Due largely to steep

slope development, Watauga County leads the state in the number of known slides. It was only after our landslide that I learned that our home had been flagged on a high-risk landslide site, mapped by State Geologists before their funding was cut. In our case, the final slide trigger was likely the blockage of drainage ditches up above that redirected storm water over a weakened slope.

A lone cemetery is now an island in the sky. Many individual graves in West Virginia have been pushed down the mountain along with the “overburden.” This cemetery now sits alone on a knoll amidst the destruction of open mines and catchment basins with thin

liners. This is a typical aerial view seen when flying over the West Virginia mountains. The topsoil gets pushed down into the valleys covering streams and then the land is blasted to get to the coal seams. The remaining coal industry “top soil” that is supposed to be replaced gets sprayed with Hydro-Seed and is reminiscent to Rocky Mountain talus slopes and scree fields. Mountaintop Removal coal extraction leads to poisoned water and high cancer rates in some of these rural communities. Flight courtesy of SouthWings
