Stories Around the CampfireOnce upon a time, a great man named Charles E. Smith had a dream for the Jewish community. An overnight camp would be purchased so that Jewish children could spend their summers living Judaism in a beautiful setting in the Catoctin Mountains. Twenty-three years later, through the help of visionary leaders in Washington and Baltimore, this dream is a reality and so much more. Jewish lives have been enriched and Jewish organizations transformed.

Tonight we share their stories. Our Speakers

DAnny WeiSSDanny Weiss’ relationship with Capital Camps began in 1988 — our pioneer season. He was a sixth-grade boy and had never been to sleep away camp — four weeks later he was hooked! As Danny puts it, “Camp became one of the most valuable learning opportunities of my life. It nurtured my independence, strengthened my Jewish identity, introduced me to lifelong friends and taught me valuable social skills.” Danny literally grew up at camp — a camper for five summers, a CIT, a counselor, sports director, Israel trip leader and then he joined the team as Assistant Camp Director in 2004 & 2005. In between, Danny attended the University of Maryland and worked as the Youth Director at Congregation B’nai Tzedek in Potomac. Following his tenure at camp, Danny worked as the Assistant Executive Director at Washington Hebrew Congregation and currently is the Assistant Director at Hillel at the University of Maryland.

This upcoming summer, Danny will return in a new role, spouse and father, as he and his two children, Eliana and Jonah, join his wife, Shira, while she volunteers as our camp doctor.

evAn KrAmeAll four members of the Krame family have a deep and abiding attachment to Capital Camps and Retreat Center. Beginning with Zachary’s first two-week stay in 1996, followed by five summers, and then Sarah, who began at age eight and continued for seven summers including one as a counselor (winning counselor of the year in 2009!). Evan served as a board member from 1997 to 2007. Evan and his wife Jodi co-chaired our first Gala event in 2003. Their philanthropic generosity and desire to give back to the camp that served their children prompted them to support the 2003 Capital Campaign and ensure the longevity of their camp. Most recently, in October, the Krames helped organize an adult leadership retreat for Beth El Congregation in Bethesda and you can guess where they came — yes, to our retreat center! Choosing this location enabled the Krames to share their “second home” with the synagogue group. As Evan reflects, “thirty people came together for a beautiful fall week-end of prayer, study, hiking and way too much noshing, and they didn’t want to leave.”

mArlA GruzinMarla Gruzin and her husband Mark are the parents of two Capital Campers, Tyler and Chad. Tyler, now 18, has ‘graduated’ from our program, and Chad, 14 will complete his fifth summer this year. Tyler has Fragile X syndrome and was a participant in our Atzma’im (special needs) program. The Gruzin family recalls that there are limited options for children with special needs, especially when it comes to summer camps. When a good friend suggested to Marla that Tyler attend an overnight camp she began her research. She heard great things about Capital Camps through friends and then met our camp director at Temple Beth Ami in 2006. It would prove to be a perfect fit for Tyler and the entire community. The rest is history. The experience was nothing less than amazing and life-altering for Tyler, for his parents and for the entire camp community.

Tonight we will hear stories of growth, change and opportunity —

funny, touching and meaningful.

Join us around the campfire.

Our musician: AlAn GOODiSAlan Goodis is a national touring Jewish musician. Born and raised in Toronto, ON, Alan is a proud product of Jewish summer camp. Noted for his dedication to building rela-tionships and community through music, Alan travels the country to serve as an Artist-in-Residence and performer at Temples, Hillels, Youth Conventions, and summer camps. His 2009 self-titled debut CD elevates Jewish music with its powerful vocals and bold melodies. Alan is a strong presence in the field of Jewish youth work and is a tireless educator of both Jewish children and adults via his musical gift. Capital Camps was both delighted and fortunate to have Alan visit in summers 2009 and 2010 where he both performed and led small-group guitar and songleading workshops with our campers and staff. Creating the LegacyThis is the story of an agency that dreamed big! It is the story of determination, dedication and collaboration of leadership and staff working hand-in-hand to ensure that a premier Jewish camp and retreat center is available to the entire community. This is the story of Capital Camps & Retreat Center.

In 1985, Jewish community leaders approved the “Campaign of the 80s.” A portion of the campaign plus

Capital Camps & RetReat CenteR

1987-2011donated proceeds from the sale of Camp Kaufmann (on the Eastern Shore) enabled the community to purchase land in the Catoctin Mountains of Pennsylvania — once the site of Camps Wohelo, Comet, and Comet Trails. With this purchase, Jewish Camp and Conference Service, Inc., was born, and the name ‘Capital Camps’ was chosen as the operational moniker. The goal of creating a Jewish residential camp for the Greater Washington area was on its way to realization.

As with any great undertaking, there are always early leaders. For Capital Camps, much of it began with Washington real estate developer and philanthropist Charles E. Smith, who was one of the first to understand the powerful long-term impact Jewish camping would have on our youth. He was joined by David and Livia Bardin, who assumed the crucial role of chairing a United Jewish Appeal Federation committee responsible for assessing the community’s overnight camping needs.

From its onset, Capital Camps chose three names to honor its initial major benefactors: Camp Benjamin was named after Benjamin Bernstein, father of Norman and Leo Bernstein; Camp Reich was named in honor of the Reich family; and Camp Kaufmann paid tribute to the

Page 6: Gala 2011 Tribute book FINAL

ACelebrationUndertheStars Page

camp that bore that name. In its first year, Capital Camps hosted more than 25 retreats. In 1988, the camp began its first summer on the Camp Benjamin site with 190 campers and 30 staff. In 1989, Capital Camps became accredited by the American Camp Association (ACA). In the summer of 1990, the 8th-10th grade campers moved to Camp Kaufmann. The following summer, Camp Reich opened for middle-school children and Camp Benjamin welcomed our younger campers.

In 1994, under the leadership of Bobby Cohen, an additional $1 million was raised and adjacent land purchased. It was at this time that the camp’s unwavering commitment to quality programming in a nurturing environment facilitated our membership in the Jewish Community Centers Association (JCCA).

Dedicated LeadershipCapital Camps has been blessed with extraor-dinary individuals serving on our Board of Directors. Bernard Whitez”l, founding Chair; Julie Levine, our second Chair; and Dr. Kenneth Goldblatt took the reins as our third Chair in 1999. Robert Burman, a long-time Board member and supporter, succeeded him in January 2003. The Goldblatt and Burman years can best be described as tumultuous and exciting, but above all, productive. It was during this period that the Jewish communities of Baltimore and Washington developed a mutually beneficial partnership. This alliance fosters Board relationships that transcend geographic boundaries and all involved enjoy a feeling of camaraderie and passion. In April 2006, Josh Fidler became our first Board Chair to reside in Baltimore. Josh’s oversight of the agency’s major construction project, coupled with his endless commitment and dedication, has propelled our agency to receive national recognition as a first-class overnight camp and retreat center.

In April 2009, Dr. Kay Klass was elected our sixth chair and throughout her tenure has overseen a period of planning and program growth. In response to the significant increase in camp registration, an additional cabin was built and paid for in summer 2010. Yotair, our rookie program for younger campers wanting a first ‘taste’ of summer camp, was reengineered and served 100 campers in 2010, quite an upswing from the previous enrollment of 23 children!

This time period has also seen significant growth in retreat center usage, with over 7,500 participants in 2010. Jewish organizations and life cycle events enjoy first-class hospitality and customer service and secular non-profits increasingly fill in mid-week time periods. Plans are underway to expand our facilities with the construction of a new conference center designed to accommodate larger retreat groups and increase our available year-round meeting space.

In April 2011, David Max, a Baltimorian with many years of volunteer service to both CCRC and the JCC of Greater Baltimore, will become our next Chair. He will continue the tradition of leadership and unity between the communities of Washington and Baltimore.

Overnight camping is tough — it takes both mental and physical strength to stay focused during the intense 12-week camp season and now throughout the year, as retreat operations have expanded. Capital Camps has benefited throughout the years from the guidance of

Page 7: Gala 2011 Tribute book FINAL

Page ACelebrationUndertheStars

excellent professional leadership beginning with Steve Makoff, the agency’s first Executive Director, followed by Faye Bousel, hired in 1993. In March of 2001, David Phillips assumed the helm as President & CEO, and brought with him a background in camping, program development, fundraising and community organization. Working with David is a team of devoted year-round professionals who manage the multi-faceted needs of an increasingly large and sophisticated agency.

Commitment to CommunityCapital Camps weaves a tapestry of informal Jewish education throughout every aspect of camp and ensures participants celebrate their own unique Jewish spirit. We bring Judaism alive, make it fun, and transmit these values to campers, staff and parents alike. The Washington Jewish Week (Jan. 1988) described Capital Camps as “not just tangentially Jewish. This is not a camp with Jewish kids, it’s a Jewish camp.”

Capital Camps has always been faithful to the principle of “camp for all,” believing strongly that a quality experience should be accessible to all regardless of financial circumstances or special needs. In 2005, this commitment to financial assistance was fortified with the establishment of the Kenneth E. Markel Capital Camps Scholarship Fund. In the fall of 2008, Clem and Sandy Alpert stepped forward and established an endowment to support scholarships at Capital Camps, the timing of which could not have been more criti-cal. In 2010, Susan and Aron Brall, established the Michael Brall scholarship fund in memory of their son, a beloved camper and CIT, adding to our pool of available scholarship funds.

At the same time, the continuing economic downturn has triggered record high scholarship requests resulting in the distribution of over $280,000 for the past two seasons. We are fortunate that the Jewish Federation of Greater Washington and the Jim Joseph Foundation stepped up and infused additional funds to help sustain scholarship support.

In 1995, Capital Camps inaugurated the Atzma’im (Independence) program, for campers with special needs. Benefitting from low camper-counselor ratios, Atzma’im campers are encouraged to participate in all camp activities. Fully integrated

into the general camp population, these campers add an important dimension to camp. In recent years there has been a growth in campers with medical diagnoses that require special attention. We have responded as we always will — with compassion and love — to ensure the success of each child.

Sustaining this degree of support for our scholarship and Atzma’im programs prompted us to look beyond special events fundraising to the development of an annual campaign. The Medurah (campfire) Society was launched in 2009 to recognize donors of $100 or more on an annual basis. Medurah Society members receive quarterly newsletters and special briefing papers to keep them informed of key agency news and events throughout the year.

Today and BeyondOver the past few years, there has been an increased understanding of the pivotal role that overnight camp and retreats play in Jewish identity-building. In 2002, senior community leadership, led by the Kogod, Bernstein and Macks families, along with the Board of Directors unveiled a comprehensive master plan to ensure that a first-class facility and program would be developed. The following summer, a state-of-the-art Aquatics Center opened, and by summer 2004 the camp’s transformation was completed with new camper villages, specialty buildings and a fortified infrastructure. By summer 2005, the dream was fully realized with the dramatic unveiling of a 700-person dining hall. Today, Capital Camps & Retreat Center is a national model and hosts visitors from far and wide to showcase our state-of-the-art facility and the impact that it can have on transforming Jewish community life.

During the summer, we are the only place to be for more than 900 campers and 150 staff. Our summer camp pro-vides a safe and nurturing environment that encourages risk-taking and social development. Jewish identities are strengthened, friendships are forged, perspectives are broadened and lives are changed. We are extremely proud to be the first Jewish camp to develop and publish a comprehensive Curriculum Guide that illustrates the impact of our program. In addition to serving as a guide for our own ongoing program development, this guide has been recognized as a national model of excellence by JCCA and is being utilized as a template for camps around the country.

Retreat Center attendance has increased with each successive season, solidifying our belief that this immersion experience is a powerful tool in the arsenal of building and strengthening Jewish identity. We are a home away from home for Jewish youth groups, synagogues, day schools and myriad other Jewish and secular not-for-profits. A Retreat Center is a critical element of any flagship Jewish community and we are proud to serve the Eastern Seaboard region. We are excited about our expansion plans and the increased opportunities; these will provide for even greater service to the community.

As time goes on and our regional and national profile grows, we remain extraordinarily grateful for the tremendous support we receive from our campers, parents, staff, volunteers and donors. Whether you have a new or old connection, our doors remain open. We would love to show you all we have to offer and to encourage your involvement at any level. Capital Camps & Retreat Center belongs to you. Come see us in action and discover the magic for yourself!

To the board, staff and friends of Capital Camps,

Mazel tov on this momentous occasion!

On behalf of the board and staff of the Foundation for Jewish Camp, we’d like to congratulate Capital Camps on its remarkable growth and success.

Capital Camps is doing the serious and impassioned work of engaging Jewish youth. The very real facts of the changing demography of the North American Jewish community makes a Jewish summer camp experience even more vital, as camp is now recognized as one of the most important educational experiences a Jewish child can receive. A high-caliber camp experience like the one found at Capital Camps is a “must have” to ensure a committed, engaged, and vibrant Jewish community in the years to come.

As your camp community knows, camp puts into practice, in a safe, non-threatening way what it means to be a Jew, to act like a Jew, to feel committed to Israel and the global Jewish community. Camp creates life-long communities and memories that evoke a positive association in Judaism that translates into affiliation and engagement.

Capital Camps takes the summer camp experience and elevates it to a whole new level, thanks to your committed staff and board, innovative approach to programming, and state of-the-art facilities. We have all benefited by observing your transformation over the past several years, the results of which have set the bar even higher for the field of Jewish camp.

The Foundation for Jewish Camp is immensely proud to work with the staff and volunteers of Capital Camps – both in our training programs and as the home of our Cornerstone Fellowship program – and fully supports its good work and commitment to the Jewish community.

May you continue to m’chayil l’chayil.

Sincerely,

Jeremy Fingerman Skip Vichness CEO Chair, Board of Directors

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

We want to add our congratulations to Capital Camps and Retreat Center on this spectacular evening. Research shows us – and we know directly as the largest network of Jewish camps – that attending a Jewish resident camp is a transformative experience. Capital Camps has given that experience to thousands of children and teens from JCCs from Baltimore to Southern Virginia. Their days at camp will live within them for the rest of their lives, inspiring their Jewish journeys and enriching the JCC Movement and the Jewish community.

Thank you for your trailblazing work and for bringing the joy of Jewish resident camping to so many.

Also, congratulations to Capital Retreat Center for nurturing and strengthening Jewish leadership and community through meaningful and active informal retreat experiences.
